June Ann Johnson Haas
HILLSBOROUGH -- June Ann Johnson Haas of Hillsborough died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, after a prolonged illness.
She was born on July 8, 1935, in Roanoke Rapids, and was married to the late Bob Haas of Hillsborough.
She was the owner of the Colonial Insurance Agency, co-owner of Bob's Bandland, owner and proprietor of the Der NussKnacker Craft Store, and retired in 2000 from the NC Department of Forestry.
She was an active member of the Orange Co. Board of Education, Orange High School Band Boosters, NC Boy Scouts, NC Bee Keepers Association, NC Crafters Association, Moose Lodge, NC Board of Elections, and Business and Professional Women's Association, and the American Tole Painters' Association.
She was a very loving and devoted mother and is survived by five children and their spouses, Dariean Gunndar Haas, Hans Conan Haas and his wife, Sheila Haas, Inga Kristen Haas, Garth Brannur Haas and his wife, Kelly Haas, and Vann Erich Haas and his wife, Christy Haas; and 13 grandchildren, Baryn Haas, Gareth Haas, Jordan Murphy, Blake Haas, Brianne Haas, Amber Ward, Kristen Ward, Sean Ward, Kirk Haas, Corbin Haas, Ainsley Haas and Keira Haas.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m., today, Nov. 20 at the home.
In her honor, and in lieu of flowers, she requested that donations be made to one or more of the following organizations: Triangle Hospice of Hillsborough, Orange High Band Boosters/Bob Haas Memorial Fund, North Carolina Cancer Society, or The Hillsborough Exchange Club Prevention of Child Abuse.
The Cremation Society of the Carolinas, Inc. in Raleigh, is handling the arrangements.
Hazel Atkinson Edwards
SURRY -- Hazel Atkinson Edwards, 86, formerly of Surry, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Guardian Care of Rocky Mount.
Mrs. Edwards was a native of Surry County, and retired in 1982 as a clerk with Surry Drug Store with 12 years of service.
She was a member of Surry Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert L. Logan and Jack C. Edwards; and a daughter, Nancy L. Bulifant.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Bowman and her husband, Herman, and Betty Wray, the widow of Ray Wray, all of Roanoke Rapids; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Oakwood Cemetery in Surry, with the Rev. Charles Bartholomew officiating.
Colonial Funeral Home, 1515 South Church Street, Smithfield, Va., is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., today, Nov. 20.
Robert Thomas Burgess Jr.
HALIFAX -- Mr. Robert Thomas Burgess Jr., 76, of 84 Camellia Lane, Halifax, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Burgess was born in Rural Hall, the son of the late Robert Thomas Burgess Sr. and Edna Smith Burgess.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps, World War II veteran and was a retired salesman with Anderson Tractor in Enfield.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Johnson Burgess; a daughter, Jeanean Burgess Mitchell of Farmville; two sons, Ralph Thomas Burgess of Moycock, and James F. Burgess of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Sarah Patton of Halifax; and five grandchildren, Stacey Burgess of Banner Elk, Jamie Burgess of Ahoskie, Hunter Burgess of Richmond, Va., and Jason Mitchell and April Mitchell, both of Farmville.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Halifax United Methodist Church in Halifax, with the Rev. Leonard Rex and the Rev. Ron Patton officiating.
Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m., today, Nov. 20 at the church.

Clarence Vernon Rose, Sr.
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Mr. Clarence Vernon Rose, Sr., 87, of 306 Oakwood Ave., Roanoke Rapids, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Rose was born in Hertford County, the son of the late Charles Vernon Rose and Katie Smith Rose.
He served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps and was retired from Dominion North Carolina Power.
He was well-known as a photographer.
He was a member of Widows Sons Lodge #519 for 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Annie Belle Barnes Rose; a daughter, Nancy Rose Guinn and her husband, Charles, of Dunedin, Fla.; two sons, Joseph Franklin Rose and his wife, Betsy, of Fredericksburg, Va., and Dr. Clarence V. Rose, Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of Bayboro; a sister, Florence Ancarrow of Roanoke Rapids; two half-brothers, Charles E. Rose of Emporia, Va., and Louis W. Rose of Dome River, N.J.; one stepson, James W. Barnes of Charlotte; seven grandchildren, Amy Rose and Nicole Rose, both of Fredericksburg, Va., Jason Rose and his wife, Patricia, and Joshua Rose, all of Bayboro, and Matthew Guinn, Christopher Guinn and Ashleigh Guinn, all of Dunedin, Fla.; a step-granddaughter, Tammy Lautzenheiser and her husband, Chuck, of Macon, Ga.; and one step-great-grandson, Brandon Lautzenheiser of Macon, Ga.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 21 at First Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids, with Minister Billy Miensen officiating.
Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery with Masonic Rites.

Clyde Watson Hargrave Sr.
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Wrenn Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, for Mr. Clyde Watson Hargrave Sr., 73, of 205 Long Circle, Roanoke Rapids, who died today, Nov. 20, 2001, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
Ernestine Brown
LITTLETON -- Ernestine Brown of Littleton, departed this earthly life Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at her home.
She was born in Halifax County on March 27, 1945, to the late Gilliam Brown Sr. and Kathleen Brown Williams.
During her early life, she accepted Christ and joined Springfield Baptist Church in Littleton, but recently changed her membership to Roanoke Chapel Baptist Church in Littleton.
Her formal education was received in the public schools of Halifax County, where she graduated from the former McIver High School with the class of 1965.
She was employed by J.P. Stevens and Company in Roanoke Rapids for 25 years.
The genuine love for her family, the sweet smile to greet loved ones, and the open arms to embrace are the caring qualities for which she will be forever remembered.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Erma B. Clanton; and a grandson, Joseph Sherwood Gilchrist.
Those left to treasure the precious memory of her love are two daughters, Tametric and Tammie Brown of Littleton; one son, Durante' Brown of Roanoke Rapids; five sisters, Vodia Jefferson (Ervin) of Gasburg, Va., Lucille Price (Joe) and Cathleen Silver (Dock), all of Littleton, Barbara P. Floyd (Charles) of Virginia Beach, Va., and Carolyn Brown of Littleton; five brothers, Gilliam Brown Jr. (Jennie) of Norfolk, Va., Eddie Brown (Josephine) of Littleton, Clifton Brown (Shirley) of Norfolk, Va., Johnny Brown (Dorothy) of Littleton, and Harry Brown (Velma) of Chesterfield, Va.; three grandchildren, Dequarius, Samantha and Jasmine, all of Littleton; a brother-in-law, William Clanton of Littleton; an aunt, Bertha Mae Dawson of Littleton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who loved her dearly.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Roanoke Chapel Baptist Church in Littleton, with the Rev. Timothy Edwards, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton is handling the arrangements, where the body will repose until 8:30 p.m., today, Nov. 20, and then for one hour prior to the funeral services at the church.
Leroy "Coolie' Bellamy
ENFIELD -- Mr. Leroy "Coolie" Bellamy, 75, of Enfield, died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 23 at Plumbline Holy Church in Enfield, with Elder Harold Jackson officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mary Lillie Wilkins
WELDON -- Mary Lillie Wilkins of 420 Chestnut St., Weldon, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Halifax Regional Medial Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 21, at First Baptist Church in Weldon, with the Rev. Johnnie R. Smith Sr. officiating.
Interment will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Weldon.

Bessye C. Rainey
LAWRENCEVILLE, Va. -- Dr. Bessye C. Rainey departed this life Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond, Va.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 21, at St. Paul's Memorial Chapel in Lawrenceville, Va., with Father Laughton Thomas officiating.
Internment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park Cemetery in South Hill, Va.
