Elliott "Ed' L. Collier
ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- Elliott "Ed" L. Collier of Ormond Beach, Fla., died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, after a very brief illness.
Mr. Collier was born in Northampton County in May 1910, the eldest of seven children of Peter M. Collier and Mary L. Daniel, and the grandson of Mont L. Daniel. At the age of 10, the family lost both parents and the children were raised by Grandma Daniel.
Adding two years to his age so he could legally work, he began working for the "Captain" at the papermill in Roanoke Rapids. Thus began his lifelong career in the paper industry. He began early and was still actively providing his expertise at the time of his death. He had a longtime relationship with the Whippany Paper Board Company in New Jersey. During World War II, he was involved in the testing and production of the paper casing for the 81mm mortar, both in the United States and overseas. A worn passport reflects the respect and demands for his skill: South Africa, Italy, Taiwan, United Kingdom and other places lost in history.
As the master chef, he was always ready to serve you some of his famous black-eyed peas with hog jowl and corn bread on short notice.
He had a strong sense of civic duty. In New Jersey, he was an active participant in the 911 volunteer fire service. A "Life Member" of the Lions, he was an active booster of the White Cane Fund which supports various programs for the blind and visually impaired. He was an active member both in Seaboard and Ormond Beach.
Before relocating to the Florida east coast, he returned to live in his native North Carolina where he and his contemporaries could be found solving the world's problems at the "Bull Pen." These same sages would have their conclaves and partake of that gourmet delight "fish muddle."
Although he left home at an early age, he maintained close ties with his family roots. He provided support to the family church, Bethel Baptist in Seaboard, of which some considered his grandfather a driving spirit in its erection.
He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege to meet and know him. As we say adieu to a man for all seasons, may we be comforted by our many memories.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 30 years, Jean; and their daughter.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Irene of Ormond Beach, Fla., for whom he was a loving and caring husband; her son and grandchildren in New Jersey; his nephews, William T.L. Romei and Donald E. Buchanan; and a niece, Virginia Smith Campbell.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the "White Cane Fund," c/o Ormond Beach Lions, P.O. Box 1912, Ormond Beach, FL 32175.
