CONWAY -- Mr. Lamont D. DeLoatch, 31, of Conway and a native of Newport News, Va., died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17 at Allen Chapel AME Church in Conway, with the Rev. Robert L. Goode officiating.
Interment will follow in the Mitchell Family Cemetery in Potecasi.
H.D. Pope Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 8 p.m., today, Nov. 16.
Ruby Jane Archer Minnin
BALTIMORE, Md. -- Mrs. Ruby Archer Minnin, 75, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, in Baltimore, Md.
Mrs. Minnin is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Minnin Wakefield of Baltimore, Md.; a son, Wayne Minnin of Redwood City, Calif.; a granddaughter, Olivia Wakefield of Baltimore, Md.; one sister, Mattie C. Archer of Fillmore, Calif.; and two brothers, J.T. Archer of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Robert Alvin Archer of Roanoke Rapids.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.
Neva Bryant
HALIFAX -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by J.L. Williams and Son Funeral Home in Enfield, for Mrs. Neva Bryant, 90, who died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
Lula Brinkley Newell
LITTLETON -- Lula Brinkley Newell, formerly of Littleton, answered God's call to eternal rest and peace on Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Guardian Care of Scotland Neck.
She was born on Aug. 23, 1924, in Halifax County, the daughter of the late Willis and Annie Brinkley. During her early life she was baptized into Christian faith and joined Lee's Chapel Baptist Church, where she served faithfully on the Usher Board and in the Senior Choir until ill health prevailed.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Johnny Watson of Littleton. To this union four children were born. She later met and married John Newell Jr. of Littleton, who also preceded her in death. This union was blessed with three children. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Bobby and William.
Her formal education was received in the public schools of Halifax County. She was employed as a factory worker and later in the field of child care.
Those left to treasure the precious memory of her love are one daughter, Mary Ruffin (Marvin) of Newport News, Va.; four sons, Carlton Newell (Angela) of Roanoke Rapids, John Watson (Carrie) of Clayton, Calvin Watson of Norfolk, Va., and Johnny Watson of Portsmouth, Va.; three sisters, Adella and Nettie Burgess of Littleton, and Mary Clawson of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Leroy Brinkley of Littleton; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Daisy and Velma Brinkley; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends who loved her dearly and will miss her greatly.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18 at Lee's Chapel Baptist Church in Littleton, with the Rev. Stanley Morgan officiating. Interment will follow in the South Street Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Littleton.
Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton is handling the arrangements, where the body will repose until 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17.
James Thomas Bowser
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Mr. James Thomas Bowser, affectionately known as Tom, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001.
Mr. Bowser was born to Nettie and the late Wyatt Thomas Bowser on Jan. 25, 1914, in Roanoke Rapids. He graduated from John Armstrong Chaloner High School in May 1962. He served his country in the United States Navy from 1962 to1966 and served in Vietnam in 1965. After his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, he worked for General Dynamics in San Diego, Calif., until his retirement.
He joined London Baptist Church at an early age. He attended church until he relocated to New York in 1962. His love for his home church never diminished throughout his life, as he often asked about the church family and requested prayer from them.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine Smith Bowser.
He is survived by his mother, Nettie Mae Bowser of Roanoke Rapids; four daughters, Tonya, Charon, Michele and Carnetta; and two sons, Cornelius and Emanuel, all of San Diego, Calf.; three brothers, Joe (Melinda) of Durham, Anton (Becky) of San Diego, Calif., and Clayton (Jackie) of Roanoke Rapids; five sisters, Barbara of Roanoke Rapids, Estella (Douglas) of Bronx, N.Y., Laura (George) of Cary, Annie of Trenton, N.J., and Shirley (Nathan) of Roanoke Rapids; 12 grandchildren; four aunts; one uncle; seven nieces; seven nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 17 at London Baptist Church, located on Hwy. 158 in Roanoke Rapids, with the Rev. Eugene Bryant, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Manley/Bowser Family Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

CLINTON, Md. -- Sarah Jane Mills Booker, 71, of Clinton, Md., formerly of Halifax County, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton.
Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton is handling the arrangements, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17 in the chapel, with Elder John Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the London Baptist Church Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- Funeral services for Richard Yelity of Portsmouth, Va., formerly of Littleton, will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17 at St. Mark Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Va.
James McCoy Scott
RICH SQUARE -- James McCoy Scott, 75, of Rich Square, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 24 at noon at First Baptist Church in Rich Square, with the Rev. William Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Rich Square.
A viewing is being held today, Nov. 23, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lionel Whidbee Funeral Home in Rich Square which is also handling the arrangements.
Cody Shelton Tippett
GASTON -- Cody Shelton Tippett of 213 Ashe St., Gaston, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001.
He is survived by his parents, Tony and Dawn Tippett of Gaston; one sister, Kandice Leeann Hill of New Hampshire; his maternal grandmother, Letha Brewer of Gaston; his maternal grandfather and stepgrandmother, A.P. and Mary Brewer of Gaston; his paternal grandparents, Shelton and Barbara Tippett of Roanoke Rapids; his paternal great-grandmother, Nettie Mae White of Roanoke Rapids; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services will be held today, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. at the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Dennis W. Gregory Sr. officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home located at 213 Ashe St., Gaston.
Askew Funeral Services in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements.
Elizabeth Jean Wells
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Elizabeth Jean Wells, 41, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001.
She was the daughter of the late Thomas Levelle Wells and was a member of Bear Swamp Baptist Church in Littleton.
She is survived by her mother, Jean Gaither Wells of Roanoke Rapids; two sisters, Debbie W. Morgan and her husband, Ozzie, and Sharon W. O'Neal and her husband, Dennis, all of Roanoke Rapids; her maternal grandfather, George Russell Gaither of Roanoke Rapids; one niece, Leslie Morgan, and three nephews, Michael Morgan, Tommy O'Neal and John O'Neal, all of Roanoke Rapids; and a special cousin, Larry "Buddy" Wells of Spring Hope.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. at Bear Swamp Baptist Church in Littleton, with the Rev. Charles Wilson and the Rev. Dennis W. Gregory Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today, Nov. 23 at Askew Funeral Services in Roanoke Rapids from 7 to 8:30 p.m. which is also handling the arrangements. The family will receive friends at other times at the home of her sister, Sharon O'Neal, 176 West Kerr Drive, Roanoke Rapids.
