Norman Otis Dickens, Jr.
TARBORO -- Norman Otis Dickens, Jr., 77, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001.
A graveside service with Masonic Rites will be held today, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck.
Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Orphanage, 600 College Street, Oxford, NC 27565.
Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck is handling the arrangements.
Francis Gerald Blackwell
TARBORO -- Mr. Francis Gerald Blackwell died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001.
Mr. Blackwell was born on a farm in Brunswick County, Va., to the late Hugh D. and Lucy Cross Blackwell. He graduated from Lawrenceville High School and attended the business school at the University of N.C. at Chapel Hill.
He entered the United States Army in 1944 during World War II and served until 1946.
Following the war, he returned to Lawrenceville, Va., where he worked for a tire company as a salesman. After a few years of learning the business, he opened Blackwell Tire Company in Roanoke Rapids in 1962. He opened another tire company, Blackwell Inc. in Tarboro and made his home in Tarboro in 1980.
His concern and experience for the interest of small business led to his appointment in 1988 to the N.C. Small Business Council by Governor James Martin. Also, his intense interest in Edgecombe County was reflected in his service as a member of the Board of Trustees of Edgecombe Community College, serving 1990 to 1994. He was a Mason and Shriner.
He is survived by his wife, Claudia Pollard Blackwell; a daughter, Judy Blackwell Laughridge of Wilson; three sons, Francis Gerald Blackwell Jr. of Zebulon, Stephen Reid Blackwell of Chapel Hill, and William Gregory Blackwell of Weldon; a brother, Odell A. Blackwell of Colonial Heights, Va.; a stepdaughter, Tammy Bridgers of Little Rock, Calif.; a stepson, Johnny D. Lewis of Kill Devil Hill; 12 grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home, located at 701 Hospital Dr., Tarboro, with Dr. Ronald E. Farrar officiating. Carlisle Funeral Home is also handling the arrangements. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Nov. 24 from 7 to 8 p.m. and other times at the home located at 316 Cambridge Dr., Tarboro.
Clifton Johnson
ENFIELD -- Clifton Johnson, 77, a resident of Britthaven Nursing Home in Enfield, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001.
J.L. Williams and Son Funeral Home in Enfield is handling the arrangements and funeral services will be held there Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 11 a.m. in the chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Charles C. Whitaker officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday, Nov. 26 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton, for James Harvey Alston of Washington, D.C., and a native of Littleton, who died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at Washington Hospital Center.
James Eugene "Gene' Wells, Sr.
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- James Eugene "Gene" Wells, Sr., 59, of 802 Carolina St., Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Duke Medical Center in Durham.
Mr. Wells was born on July 25, 1942, in neighboring Brunswick County, Va.
Many who knew him will attest to his kind heart and sense of humor, and for many years he was known for his favorite talent and passion, cooking.
Gene and his friends have provided Roanoke Rapids residents with many tasty meals for many causes. He was always there for charities and fund-raisers ranging from the RRHS football team to area church functions. He will be missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert "Bob" and Pearl Wells; one sister, Rebecca W. Elliott; and two brothers, Herman L. Wells and Robert A. "Huck" Wells.
He is survived by Linda Allen of the home; two sons, James Eugene Wells, Jr. and his wife, Rita, of Clover, Va., and Carl Bruce Wells and his wife, Carole Ann, of Wake Forest; three brothers, Vernon "Booda" Wells and his wife, Pauline, of Bon Aire, Ga., William "Shorty" Wells and his wife, Shirley, of Chesterfield, Va., and William Carroll Newton and his wife, Molly, of South Hill, Va.; six grandchildren, Samantha, Jamie, Eric, and Tony Wells of Roanoke Rapids, Ryan Wells of Wake Forest, and Kayla Cooper of Isle, Minn.; three step-grandchildren, Holly, Chris and Emily.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1 at Smith United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bobby Dean officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service at Smith United Methodist Church, and other times at 802 Carolina St.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Heart Fund or to Smith United Methodist Church.

Dr. Gordon A. Berkstresser, III
KNIGHTDALE -- Dr. Gordon A. Berkstresser, III, 70, of Knightdale, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, in South Carolina, while traveling with his family.
Mr. Berkstresser was born on Dec. 23, 1930, in Passaic, N.J., to the late Gordon Abbott Berkstresser, II and Else Pohlers Berkstresser. He lived in Roanoke Rapids. After high school, he attended N.C. State University and later served a tour of duty in the Army. He retired from N.C. State University as Professor Emeritus in the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betsy Berkstresser in 1980; and his brother, Tom Berkstresser in 1995.
He is survived by his children, Elsa Hergeth and her husband, Helmut Hergeth, Ph.D of Raleigh, Susan Kaminsky of Longwood, Fla., Mary Monck and her husband, Tom Monck, of Knightdale, and Gordon A. Berkstresser, IV, Ph.D and his wife, Lisa Berkstresser, of Montgomery, Ala.; nine grandchildren; one niece; and two nephews.
L. Harold Poole Funeral Service, located at 944 Old Knight Rd., Knightdale, is handling the arrangements, where a memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1 in the chapel.
The family will receive relatives and friends immediately following the memorial service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Camel Club of Raleigh or to a charity of your choice.

BALTIMORE, Md. -- James Leon Bradley, 61, of 48 Alberge Lane, Baltimore, Md., died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, in Baltimore, Md.
Mr. Bradley is survived by his wife, Paulette Gettis Bradley of Baltimore, Md.; his children, Robert Player and James L. Bradley Jr., both of Baltimore, Md.; six sisters, Clara Arrington of Roanoke Rapids, Delois Rover of Dale City, Va., Mayfield Joyner and Eula Brinson, both of Washington, D.C., Elaine Scott of Florida, and Carol Carmichael of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, Donnell Bradley of Weldon, Clifton Bradley of Baltimore, Md., and Johnny Jack Bradley of Buffalo, N.Y.; his stepsisters, Lenora Smith of Bronx, N.Y., Mildred Fisher of Marietta, Ga., Marion Stansbury of Suitland, Md., and Sheryl Stansbury of Halifax; and his stepbrothers, James Stansbury of Roanoke Rapids and Dr. Donnell Stansbury of New York City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1 at Smith Chapel Baptist Church in Halifax, with the Rev. Albert E. Clark Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Augustus Bradley Cemetery in Halifax.

Ora Golson Batchelor
ENFIELD -- Ora Golson Batchelor was born on Feb. 4, 1910, and departed this life Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Brook Haven Rest Home in Enfield.
She leaves to cherish her memories two sisters, Ethel Golson Chambers of Georgianna, Ala., and Eva Golson Hicks of Birmingham, Ala.; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 1 at First Baptist Church in Enfield, with the Rev. Stephen A.G. Howard officiating.
