ENFIELD -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Clark Funeral Home in Enfield, for Michael Hudson, 33, of Enfield, who died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002.
Herman P. 'Dick' Cooper
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Askew Funeral Services in Roanoke Rapids, for Herman P. "Dick" Cooper, 76, of 1015 Oakley Ave., Roanoke Rapids, who died Thursday, June 19, 2003.
William Collins 'Bill' Hodges
SANFORD -- A memorial service will be held for William Collins "Bill" Hodges at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 12, at First Presbyterian Church, on Roanoke Ave., with the Rev. David McDonald officiating.
Mr. Hodges died Jan. 21, 2003, in Sanford, but wished to return to Roanoke Rapids where he grew up and attended school.
After graduating from Roanoke Rapids High School with the class of 1943, he entered UNC Chapel Hill as a freshman, then joined the Marines in 1944.
Following World War II, he returned to UNC Chapel Hill and graduated in 1948.
He then worked as a reporter and Sports Editor at the Roanoke Rapids Herald for four years.
In 1952, he married Grace E. Taylor of Roanoke Rapids, and they moved to High Point, where Bill served as the Sports Editor, then News Editor of the High Point Enterprise.
In 1973, Hodges was hired as Editor of the Sanford Herald, where he remained until his retirement in 1993.
During his nearly six decades as a newspaperman, he won several N.C. Press Association awards.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth T. Hodges and her husband, Ron Everhart; their daughter, Sarah, of Charlotte, and their son, Chris, of Richmond, Va.; and daughter, Ann of Alpharetta, Ga.

Leona Wallace Matthews Carlyle
WELDON -- Leona Wallace Matthews Carlyle, 94, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at the Convalescent Center of Halifax in Weldon.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mildred M. Vierling; two stepsons, James Carlyle and John Carlyle Jr.; and two sisters, Ula Hudson and Mertie Wheeler.
She is survived by four sons, Thurman L. Matthews of Richmond, Va., Roland L. Matthews of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., Alex Durward Matthews of Lake Isabella, Calif., and Wilbert R. Matthews of Detroit; two sisters, Doris Knight of Weldon and Olive Kulesa of Roanoke Rapids; and 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids is handling the arrangements, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20, in the chapel, with the Rev. Margaret Horrell officiating.
Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the funeral home.
Leslie 'D-Boy' Jones
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Robinson Funeral Home in Littleton, for Mr. Leslie "D-Boy" Jones, 44, of 134 South Gate Dr., Roanoke Rapids, who died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Cofield Funeral Home in Weldon, for George Braxton Mitchell, of Washington, D.C., who died today, Oct. 9, 2002, at Greater Southeast Hospital in Washington, D.C.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Funeral arrangements are incomplete and being handled by Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, for Willard Brant Parham, 50, of 659 Charlotte St., Roanoke Rapids, who died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002.
Inez Parker Sadler
CHESAPEAKE, Va. -- Mrs. Inez Parker Sadler, 80, of Dominion Village, 2856 Forehand Drive, Chesapeake, Va., previously of 4940 Portsmouth Blvd., passed on to heaven Sunday, June 2, 2002.
Mrs. Sadler was a registered nurse and graduated from Paris Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcom Douglas Sadler Jr.
She is survived by a specially challenged daughter, Martha Louise Sadler of Dominion Village.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 6, at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Garysburg, with the Rev. Hank Wilkinson officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Eastern Virginia Medical School for Diabetic Research, to the Multiple Sclerosis Fund, or to the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.

WHITAKERS -- Mr. Kelly Lynch, 57, of Whitakers, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 22, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Linda Taybron officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Burial will follow in the Spragley Family Cemetery.

ELIZABETH CITY -- Mrs. Alberta Hoffler Eason died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, after a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Thursday, Feb. 20, at First Baptist Church in Hertford, with the Rev. J.H. London Jr., pastor, officiating.
A viewing will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., with a wake starting at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the church.

Josephine Jones Balmer
Beloved wife, mother and grandmother
JACKSON -- Mrs. Josephine Jones Balmer, 89, formerly of 309 Old Emporia Road, Gaston, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Hampton Woods Nursing Home in Jackson, where she was a resident.
Mrs. Balmer was born in Halifax County, the daughter of the late Everett Jones and Lula Hux Jones.
She was a member of Lakeview Park Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Balmer.
She is survived by a son, Everett "Pete" Balmer of Gaston; and a beloved grandson, Stephen Balmer of Garner.
