Dorothy Williams Earley

Dorothy Williams Earley, age 91, of the 600 Block of Stokes St. in Ahoskie, died Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie. She was born December 11, 1919 in Elizabeth City to the late William W. Williams and Mary Morgan Williams. She was the wife of the late Willard P. Earley.
She worked for Belk Department Store for several years and was a member of Ahoskie Freewill Baptist Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Friday, February 25, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie. Rev. Joseph Futrell and Rev. Robert May will officiate. Burial will be private.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Jean Tinkham of Houston, TX, Jane Newsome and husband Bob of Winton and Joan Oster and husband Tom of Paducah, KY, grandchildren Alana Gogan, Alisa Koch, Tim Newsome, Lisa Newsome, Jennifer Goff, Jeremy Oster and Jodi McIntosh and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister Pearl Powell and four brothers Bill, Ed, Bruce and Earl Williams.
The family will receive friends following the service at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie and other times at the home of her daughter Jane Newsome.

Fannie Marie Leary

Fannie Marie Leary, 81, died February 24, 2011 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie. The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church of Ahoskie on Sunday, February 27, at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Daniel Glaze officiating. Burial will follow in the Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 2:00 p.m. in the church fellowship hall.
She was preceded in death by her parents James Stanley Leary and Edna Sewell Leary, her brothers James Stanley Leary, Jr. and Stephen Sewell Leary, and a sister Edna Earle Leary Newsome.
A lifelong resident of Ahoskie, Fannie was born March 20, 1929, graduated from Ahoskie High School, attended Chowan College and received her Nurse’s Assistant Certification from Roanoke-Chowan Community College. As a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, she participated in various church organizations and kept the nursery for 25 years. She worked at Pizza Inn and delivered papers for The News-Herald, receiving recognition as Carrier of the Month and Carrier of the Year.
Fannie is survived by brothers Dr. Thomas E. Leary and wife Joyce, William E. Leary, Sr. and wife Bess of Ahoskie, N.C., and Rev. David O. Leary and wife Bonita of Morganton, N.C., and a sister-in-law, Lamera Leary of Chesapeake, VA; six nieces, seven nephews, eleven great-nieces and nine great-nephews.

Eugene Powell

AHOSKIE - Eugene Powell, age 76, of the 1400 block of US 13 South, died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center of Hampton, VA.
Mr. Powell was born in Union Town, Pennsylvania, on March 12, 1934, a son of the late Buford and Sarah Taper Powell. Eugene, affectionately known as "Bizz" to family and friends, was a graduate of German Township High School and received his Associate’s Degree in Business Administration at Roanoke Chowan Community College, where he later served as Veteran Service Officer. He was a 20 year veteran in the United States Air Force. "Bizz" served as manager of Wholesale Building Supply and was top salesman at Heilig-Meyers Furniture Company in Ahoskie.
Mr. Powell was an active member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church where he served as deacon, usher, choir member and choir guild, and was the Church’s Santa Claus. He was also very active in several civic and community organizations, including the Masons, the Elks, and Mid East Commission. He served on the Ahoskie Town Council, and starred in many theatrical productions at the Gallery Theater. When his children were in school, Eugene was PTA president, a band booster parent, and served as a substitute teacher.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Elsie Jean Hall Powell; a daughter, Nikki N. Brooks of Springfield, VA; a son, Gregory E. Powell of Fairfax, VA; a granddaughter, Kirstin B. Brooks; two sisters, Naomi Palmer and Grace Kirk, both of Washington, DC; and two brothers, Albert Powell and Michael Powell, also of Washington, DC. Also surviving is a son, Hugh M. Powell of California, and daughters, Helen P. Leith and Grace Powell of Scotland.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Ashe and Chaplain Nathaniel Milton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 11, and other times at the home. Philip Ray Coggin, Sr.

AHOSKIE, NC – Philip Ray Coggin, Sr., age 79, of the 500 block of Lakeview Drive, died Friday, May 13, 2011, at his home.
Mr. Coggin was born on November 21, 1931, in Halifax County, a son of the late Lee Oliver and Emma Lou McGregor Coggin. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie and was owner of Phil Coggin Insurance Agency in Ahoskie.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Alice Jeans Coggin of the home; his daughters, Wanda C. Woodford and husband, Bill of Liberty, NC, and Sharon C. Cox of Greensboro, NC; his son, Philip Ray Coggin, Jr. of Liberty, NC; three grandchildren, Brandy Woodford, Daniel Cox and Ally Coggin and two great-grandchildren, Carmen and Mitchell Hedrick. Besides his parents, Phil was predeceased by three brothers, Ben, Ezell, and Leamon Coggin.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie on Monday, May 16, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery in Nashville, NC, at 2:00 p.m. on Monday. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, and other times at the home. Jacqueline Barnhill Earley

Jacqueline Barnhill Earley, age 82, of Trap, died Thursday, May 5, 2011 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. She was born October 14, 1928 in Pitt Co., to the late Nathan Claudius Barnhill and Lydia Marcelle Carson and was the wife of the late Donald Jackson Earley.
She graduated from East Carolina University, was a Home Economist thru the Cooperative Extension of Hertford County, taught at Ahoskie High School and then taught at Bertie Academy which later became Lawrence Academy. She worked at Bertie County Nutrition site where she loved to teach games and helped deliver meals to Seniors, she was very active in Mars Hill Baptist Church and in the Church of Christ. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Sunday, May 8, 2011 at 3:00 PM at Mars Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Bob Johnson will officiate.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, a son James Michael Earley and his wife Barbara of Cofield, daughters Juanita Earley Fleming and her husband George of Concorde and Susan Lynn Earley of Trap, a sister Marcella Jenkins of Robersonville, a brother Dr. Alton Barnhill of Topeka, KS, a daughter-in-law Nancy Blanton Earley of Knightdale, grandchildren Benjamin Fleming, Sarah Fleming, Katherine Earley, Jacqueline Earley, Jackson Earley and Betsy John Lane, and great-grandchildren Avery and Lucy Fleming.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a son Donald Jackson Earley, Jr.
The family will receive friends Saturday at the home 1306 Meadow Rd, Trap and at the church following the service on Sunday.

Helen Yvonne Oldaker Bess

Helen Yvonne Oldaker Bess, (Yvonne), age 91, passed away peacefully at the Skilled Nursing Facility, Chowan Hospital, Edenton, NC, on May 4, 2011. Born in Canton, Ohio, she was the only child of the late J. Fred and Mary L. Smith. Yvonne was married for 31 years to the late Don L. Oldaker of Columbus, OH, and then to the late William Bess of Lakeland, FL.
She is survived and will be forever remembered by her only child, a daughter, Donnelle Oldaker Graham and son-in-law Jon Philip Graham, of Edenton, NC. Yvonne has two wonderful grandsons and their families of whom she was very proud: Philip Jon Graham and his wife Lena, Cornelius, NC, and Andrew Jon Graham and his wife Toni, Pineville, NC. She is survived by 4 great-grandchildren, Phil and Lena’s children Peyton, Patterson, and Preston Graham and Andrew and Toni’s child Stella Graham. Yvonne also has a nephew, Bruce L. Chapman of Mason, Ohio. Last, but not least, she is survived by her very best friend, a chocolate lab named Corrina.
Yvonne was employed by Ohio State University for 21 years and at her retirement was the Assistant to the Dean of the College of the Arts. She touched many people with her Christian witness, her generosity, and her easy, peaceful spirit. She was loved and appreciated by all who knew her and she will be missed, yet always loved, respected, and remembered.
There will be a memorial service at the Edenton United Methodist Church, 225 Virginia Road, Edenton, NC, 27932, on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 3:00pm. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Edenton United Methodist Church. Please designate Memorial Fund on your check. Donations may also be made to AWARE, a local animal welfare organization, at AWARE P.O. Box 203, Hertford, NC 27944. Graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Columbus, Ohio at a later date.
Jennings B. Ruffin

AHOSKIE – Jennings Bryan Ruffin, Jr., age 71, of S. Academy St. died Thursday, September 13, 2012, in his home.
Mr. Ruffin was born in Richmond, VA on June 16, 1941, a son of the late Iris Stokes and Jennings B. Ruffin, Sr., M.D. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ahoskie.
Jennings was a graduate of Wake Forest University where he earned his B.S. degree in Chemistry. He enjoyed a successful business career, serving as an executive of several large corporations. Later in life, he owned and operated Ruffin Associates, Inc. supporting businesses throughout Eastern North Carolina and along North Carolina’s Outer Banks.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving and devoted wife of over 50 years, Judith Williams Ruffin; his daughters, Laura Elizabeth Ruffin of Hillsborough, NC, and Annie Catherine Ruffin of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and his grandchildren, Haley Ashton Daniels, Jessen Lee Saylor, and Emily Elizabeth Skrypek. He is also survived by his brother, Sterling Stokes Ruffin and his wife, Anita Joyner Ruffin of Raleigh, NC.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church of Ahoskie on Sunday, September 16, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Greg Barmer officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service in Ahoskie from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 15, and other times at the home. MENOLA – Stephen Roy Blowe, age 54, passed away Monday, July 2, 2012 at his home.
Stephen was born in Hertford County on January 22, 1958, a son of the late J. Robert Blowe and Elizabeth Britt Blowe. He was a member of Menola Baptist Church and was a former supervisor at the Resinall Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Jessica Blowe of Suffolk, VA; his son, Ryan Blowe of Suffolk, VA; a brother, Bobby Blowe of Clayton, NC; and two grandchildren, Rhi’yanna Lassiter and Chayce Stallworth.
A celebration of life service will be conducted on Monday, July 9 at 2:00 PM at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie with Rev. Cecil Harkey officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., prior to services.

Stephen Edward Nicholson

AHOSKIE, NC - Mr. Stephen Edward Nicholson, age 67, died at the Vidant Inpatient Hospice Center in Greenville, NC, on Saturday, July 14, 2012.
Mr. Nicholson was born in Halifax County on March 7, 1945, a son of the late Nannie Parks Nicholson and George Nicholson. He moved to Murfreesboro as a child where was raised. After graduating from Murfreesboro High School he joined the U.S. Air Force, and served a tour of six years. Mr. Nicholson served with the Murfreesboro Police Department following his tour of duty for a number of years, and after, worked at Georgia Pacific as a safety inspector for several years. He also worked at Resinall Corporation in Severn, NC, for approximately fourteen years where he would retire. He was a member of Early’s Baptist Church in Ahoskie, NC.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria L. Nicholson of the home; one son Rick Nicholson and his wife, Valori of Houston, TX; two stepdaughters, Kim Lashley and her husband, Preston of Nashville, NC, and Heather Royal and her husband, June of Knightdale, NC; and one stepson, Richie Davis and his wife, Renee’ of Rocky Mount, NC. Also surviving is one granddaughter, Samantha Nicholson.
Besides his mother and father, Stephen was preceded in death by two sisters, Paula N. Stradley and Sylvia N. Harris.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 18, 2012 at 11 A.M. at the Chapel of Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie, NC, with the Rev. Ronald McSwain officiating. The interment will follow at the Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC.
The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M.

AHOSKIE – Josephine Theresa Salone Raleigh, age 79, passed away Monday, July 16, 2012 at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital.
Josephine was born in New York City, NY on October 30, 1932, a daughter of the late Giuseppe Salone and Anna Ruth Castro Salone. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, a retired hairdresser and an Avon Representative for 35 years.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Ruth Parker and husband Chris, Theresa Rawls and husband Clay, and Nancy Chase, all of Ahoskie; a son, James W. Raleigh, Jr. and wife Cherry of Colerain; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life memorial service will be conducted on Wednesday, July 18 at 3:00 PM at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home in Ahoskie with Rev. Paul Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., prior to services.
