Murfreesboro - Doretta Gibson Maxton, 85, died Sunday, September 2, 2012 at The Ahoskie House.
She had lived in Greensboro, NC, for many years prior to returning to Murfreesboro five years ago.
Ms. Maxton was the daughter of the late Georgia Mae Gibson and Marvin Gibson.
She is survived by a brother, Marvin L. Gibson, Jr., a sister-in-law Trudy Gibson and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday, September 4 at 2:00 p.m. in Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro.

Elmer A. "Fluggie" Byrum

COLERAIN – Elmer Ashley "Fluggie" Byrum, age 83, of Perrytown Road, died Monday, September 3, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Byrum was born in Bertie County on December 30, 1928, a son of the late Emma Evans and George W. Byrum.
A retired farmer, Mr. Byrum was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, a former volunteer fireman with the Perrytown Fire Department, and a former member of the Colerain Lion’s Club.
Mr. Byrum is survived by his loving wife, Mary Elizabeth Stratton Byrum, daughter, Judy B. Freeman and husband, David, of Colerain, NC; son, Ashley Byrum and wife, Sue of Colerain, NC; grandchildren, Israel Byrum and wife Courtney, Tracy Byrum and wife Casey, Josh Freeman, Kyle Freeman and Lance Freeman; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Byrum, Evan Byrum and Banks Byrum.
A celebration of life service will be conducted on Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at Bethany Baptist Church, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Tommy Tripp officiating.
Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie.
The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Vidant Home Health & Hospice, P. O. Box 272, Ahoskie NC 27910.

Ted Hamilton Shinaberry, Sr., 85, of Richmond Va., passed away Thursday, September 13, 2012.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar A. and Mary V. Shinaberry; and brothers Ronald Eugene Shinaberry and Thomas Hannah Shinaberry.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Emily A. Shinaberry; two children Wendy S. Brooks and husband Bill, of Fredericksburg Va., Ted H. Shinaberry, Jr., and wife Patty, of Holly Springs, NC.; brothers, Lewis Shinaberry of Warren, Ohio, Gale Shinaberry of Niles Ohio, sister Rebecca Evans of South Jordan, Utah; sister-in-law, Elva Shinaberry of Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren Garrett, Spencer and Sarah Brooks, Jacob and Savannah Shinaberry, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ted was raised in Cass, West Virginia and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
He taught dance at Arthur Murray Studios in WV and Richmond.
He retired from International Harvester, volunteered at Johnson-Willis Hospital for 10 years, and was an active member of Huguenot United Methodist Church, where he served as head usher and was very involved in the United Methodist Men’s group.
The family will receive friends and family on Sunday, September 16, from 6 to 7:30 pm at Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 am at Huguenot UMC.
A graveside service will take place on Tuesday at 11 am at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC.

HILDA BISHOP EVANS – Palm Bay, FL
Hilda Bishop Evans, age 90, passed away on Monday, September 17, 2012 at William Childs Hospice House in Palm Bay, Florida.
Hilda was born in Roxobel, NC, on December 23, 1921, the daughter of Flonie Bishop Ivonok and Reuben D. Bishop.
She graduated from Roxobel-Kelford High School, class of 1939 and was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Vicky C. Stanfield and husband Jimmy of Palm Bay, FL and Joyce C. Rilee and late husband Carl of Mechanicsville, VA; a brother George Reuben "Buck" Bishop and wife Willie Lou of Roxobel, NC; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, two nieces and many friends.
Even though she lived in Norfolk, VA and Florida, Roxobel was always home to Hilda.
Hilda was a loving, caring mother, sister, wife, aunt, grandmother and friend known to many as "Mimi" who never met a stranger.
Her family and friends will sorely miss her.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery with Dr. Dave Rimel officiating.
Thomas M. Umphlett

Mr. Thomas M. Umphlett, age 81, died at the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, VA, on Friday, September 21, 2012.
He was born to Daisy Mullen Umphlett and Willie L. Umphlett on May 12, 1931.
Mr. Umphlett graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1950, where he excelled in basketball, baseball and football.
Following high school, he had scholarship offers from Duke, UNC, NC State and Wake Forest University to play football.
Also during this time, he was being scouted by the Boston Red Sox and chose to sign with them in 1950.
In 1953, he became the starting center fielder.
He was runner-up for Rookie of the Year in the American League and named Boston’s Rookie of the Year in 1953.
Mr. Umphlett spent twenty one years as a player and a manger in professional baseball.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie and a longtime member of the Business Men’s Bible Class.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Mary Ann Godwin Umphlett of the home, one son Mike Umphlett and his wife Charlena and grandsons, Christian and Thomas all of Charlotte, NC.
Also surviving are sisters, Jean Overton of Ahoskie, NC; Nancy Bannerman of Houston, TX, Dot Barton of Richmond, VA and Sarah Hawkins of Lumberton, NC.
Memorial services will be conducted on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at 11 A.M. at the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie with the Rev. Daniel Glaze officiating.
The family will receive friends on Monday evening at the home of Dr. Charles and Lois Sawyer, 112 Forest Drive, Ahoskie, NC, from 6:00-7:30 P.M. and other times at the home of Thomas and Mary Ann Umphlett.

COFIELD – Patricia Ann Walters, age 65, of Cofield, died Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at her home.
She was born August 25, 1945 in Upland, CA to Veneta Biggerstaff Smith and the late Fred R. Smith.
She was a homemaker, a wonderful grandmother and a member of Hickory Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at Hickory Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. Rev Michael Williams will officiate.
Left to cherish her memory is her mother; her husband, Ronald G. Walters; sons, Ronald Wayne Walters of Detroit, MI and Timothy Eric Walters and wife, Grace, Taylor of Franklin, VA; daughters, Christina Martin and husband, Gary, of Conway and Stephanie Todd and husband, Jay, of Harrellsville; a brother, Wayne D. His survivors include: wife, Emma Hill of Ahoskie, NC; two daughters, Jane Hill Niles of Bronx, NY and Antoinette Hill of Chester, NY; three grandsons, Wendell Niles of Charlotte, NC, David Hill of Chester, NY and Vance Niles of Bronx, NY; one sister, Marion Hathaway of New York City, NY; one uncle, Johnathan Moore of Ahoskie, NC; six great-grandchildren; four brothers-in-law; and six sisters-in-law.
His funeral service will be held on Monday February 7, 2011 at 1 p.m. at Elm Grove Baptist Church, Aulander, NC.
Rev. Anthony Ward will be officiating.
His interment will be at Hillcrest Cemetery, Ahoskie, NC.

COLERAIN – Alpheus Delbridge "A.D." Jernigan, Jr., 76, of 404 West River Street, Colerain, died Saturday, February 12, 2011 at his home.
He was born in Bertie County, on May 30, 1934 to the late Eva Harrison Jernigan and Alpheus D. Jernigan Sr. and was predeceased by his wife, Janice "Jackie" Britt Jernigan and a sister, Muriel Perry.
A.D was a member of Colerain Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon.
He was the former Mayor of Colerain, and former member of the Colerain Fire and Rescue, the Masonic Lodge and the Lions Club.
He was the owner of Nationwide Insurance Agency in Colerain, and served in the US Army.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at Colerain Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Roberts Jr.
Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery.
Survivors include his sons, Stuart Jernigan and wife, Cheryl Perry, of Charlotte, and David Jernigan and wife, Cheryl Pierce, of Colerain; sisters, Dorothy Mizelle of Askewville, and Annie Elizabeth Casper of Pine Ridge; and a granddaughter, Amanda J. Shanks of Charlotte.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. on Monday, February 14 at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, and at other times from the home.
