RICH SQUARE – Robert Eugene "Gene" Robbins, Jr., age 81, died at the Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, on Friday, April 29, 2011.
Mr. Robbins was a native of Northampton County. He attended the US Army NCO Academy and served four years of service to his country. He was married to Jean Hoggard Robbins in 1952 and to this marriage was born three children.
Mr. Robbins was a faithful employee of Roanoke Electric, retiring after forty-one years. He was a life long member of the Rich Square Baptist Church where he served many capacities some of which include teaching Sunday school and serving as deacon. He was a member of the American Legion Post# 488 and past member of the Rich Square Lions Club.
Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Alma Brown Robbins and Robert Eugene Robbins, Sr.; two sisters, Ester Pittman and Margaret Gerbin; and two brothers, Wilson Robbins and Haywood Robbins.
Survivors include his wife, Jean H. Robbins of the home; one daughter, Joyce Ann Crabtree and her husband, Michael, of Greensboro; two sons, Bobby Robbins and his wife, Terry, and Tommy Robbins and his wife, Deneen, all of Rich Square; two sisters, Evelyn Hall of Rich Square and Janie Burgess and her husband, G.O., of Conway; and one brother, Willie Robbins and his wife, Maude, of Scotland Neck. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Casey Liverman, Robert Robbins IV, Kathryn Robbins, Clay Robbins, Cole Robbins and Leslie Buckner; and five great-grandchildren, Lacy Robbins, Logan Robbins, Callie Liverman, Lilly Buckner and Ava Buckner.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 2, 2011 at the Rich Square Baptist Church in Rich Square with the Rev. Bob Rogers officiating. The interment will follow at the Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square.
The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service on Sunday afternoon from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, who handled the arrangements.
Burial was at Ashland Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.

WINDSOR – Johnnie Bruce Hoggard, age 65 of the 700 Block of Mt. Olive Road, Windsor, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at his home.
He was born August 12, 1945 in Bertie County to the late Johnny Woodrow Hoggard and Thelma Miller Hoggard.
He was a member of Republican Baptist Church, a member of the Army National Guard and was a truck driver for over forty years, the last 28 years at Freeman Metal Products in Ahoskie.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Republican Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery. Rev. J.N. Worsley will officiate.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Kathy Leary Hoggard of the home; a stepdaughter, Teresa Miller; brothers, Herman Hoggard of Windsor, Therman Hoggard and his wife, Nancy, of Windsor and Sherman Hoggard and his wife, Judy, of Greenville; grandchildren, Jamie, Jessica and Christopher; and great-grandchildren, Kaelyn, Hunter and Madisyn.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

EURE – Paulette Felton Wester, 68, of 106 White Oak Road, died Friday, June 17, 2011 in her home.
Mrs. Wester was born in Gates County, and was the daughter of the late Dalton B. and Virginia Howell Felton.
Employed with the Gates County School System for 21 years, she first worked as a secretary and later in the central office finance department.
Mrs. Wester served as Field Representative, covering nine counties, for both former United States Representatives Eva Clayton and Frank Ballance, and continued in service with our current Congressman, Rep. G.K. Butterfield. Active in politics, she served as both Hall Precinct Chairman and as Chairman of the Gates County Democratic Executive Committee.
Later, going back to her roots of service to the children of Gates County, she was elected to serve on the Gates County Board of Education.
Among other areas of involvement, she had served on the Board of Directors of the Gates County Rural Health Services, was a published author of the book, "A Journey in Time", wrote a weekly article with the same title for The Gates County Index, had received the 1998 Historian of the Year-East from the NC Society of Historians, and most recently in April received The Order of the Long Leaf Pine from North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue.
Surviving are her husband of 51 years, John G. Wester Sr.; her son, John G. Wester, Jr. and wife, Pam; her grandson, Jonathan A. Wester; and her brother, Michael C. Felton and wife, Patricia, all of Eure.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 19, 2011 in Eure Baptist Church by Dr. Wayne Proctor and the Rev. Wayne Gardner.
Burial will follow in the family plot at Eure Christian Church with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, handling arrangements.
Friends may join the family at the residence.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to the fine folks at Hospice and also to her private duty caregiver, Crystal Jenkins, for the wonderful care given to their loved one over the past several weeks.

AULANDER – Mr. Arthur Woodrow Tayloe, age 96, died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his children, on Monday, June 27, 2011.
He was born on January 6, 1915 in Bertie County, to the late William Arthur Tayloe and Ethel Burden Tayloe.
He graduated from Aulander High School and upon graduation attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He was married to the late Marie Worthington Tayloe for forty-nine wonderful years.
Woodrow was a very loving and devoted husband and father.
He was a member of Aulander Baptist Church, serving as a deacon.
Woodrow was a farmer, merchant owner and community leader for many years in Aulander and the Roanoke-Chowan area.
He was a charter member of Aulander Ruritan Club, Aulander Masonic Lodge, and Ahoskie Kiwanis Club.
He has also served on the Aulander Town Council, Bank of Aulander Board, Chowan Board of Trustees, Wachovia Bank and Trust Board, Roanoke-Chowan Hospital Board of Trustees and Roanoke-Chowan Hospital Foundation and Davie Lodge in Ahoskie.
Woodrow spent his later years enjoying flowers and his love of reading.
Preceding him in death are his wife and parents, as well as his brother, William Ennis Tayloe; and daughter, Elaine Tayloe Kirkland.
Survivors include his son, Arthur Woodrow Tayloe, Jr. and wife, Lyn, of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter, Mary Jane Tayloe of Aulander; grandchildren, William Scott Kirkland and wife, Anne, of Raleigh, Stephen Ennis Kirkland and wife, Sarah, of Norfolk, VA, William Arthur Tayloe, II and wife, Kari, of Pawleys Island, SC and Courtney Lyn Tayloe of Pawleys Island, SC; one great-grandchild, Laine Elizabeth Kirkland of Raleigh; one nephew, John Richard Taylor of Virginia Beach, VA, and Dorothy Sessoms.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2011 at Aulander Cemetery in Aulander with the Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating.
The visitation will follow the service at Aulander Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
