Edith Grant Flythe
February 10, 1921 - November 28, 2009
Edith Grant Flythe, 88, of Jackson, North Carolina, received her eternal reward with God peacefully and prayerfully with family by her side on Saturday, November 28, 2009.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, and caring sister. She retired from Northampton County Public Schools as an elementary teacher.
She enjoyed serving in various leadership roles in the Delta Kappa Gamma teacher honor society.
She loved her church and her church family.
She exemplified her Christian life by her faith and enriched other lives with joy and kindness.
She was the widow of Marvin Jackson Flythe, also preceding her in death are her mother, Lena Augustus Robinson, her father, William Watkins Grant, two sisters; Virginia Grant Woodruff and Rebecca Grant Guthrie, and one brother, William W. Grant.
She is survived by a daughter, Greta Flythe of Jackson, North Carolina, one son, Jack Flythe and his wife Shari of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and two grandsons; Andy Flythe of Greensboro, North Carolina and Jamie Flythe of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, also surviving are two sisters; Mildred Grant Bolton and Evelyn Grant Doughtie, both of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, one brother, Marshall Grant and his wife, Marie of Garysburg, North Carolina, a sister-in-law, Helen F. Boone of Como, North Carolina, several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Esther Parker of Murfeesboro, North Carolina.

Funeral Service: Tuesday, December 1, 2009, 11:00AM at Jackson United Methodist Church in Jackson, North Carolina
The interment will follow the service at Jackson Cemetery in Jackson, North Carolina.
The Pastor Warren Heitzenrater and Reverend Joe McLean will be officiating.
Gladys Faye Conner
November 6, 1934 - January 2, 2010
Occupation: Homemaker
Mrs. Gladys Faye Conner, age 75, died on Saturday, January 2, 2010.
She was a native of Johnston County.
She made her home in Bertie and Hertford County, living most of her adult life until recently moving to Potecasi. Mrs. Conner worked very hard in the home raising her children.
Preceding her in death is her mother and father, Martha C. Brown and George G. Bailey, her husband, William Vernon Conner, three sons, Larry Wayne Parker, Robert Earl and Beecher Conner and one brother, Kenny Bailey.
Survivors include, one daughter, Kim C. Johnson and her husband Phillip of Roanoke Rapids, seven sons; Frankie Parker and his wife Sheila, Joey Parker and his wife Lori all of Aulander, Glenn Parker and his wife Alice, Vernon Conner and his wife Trena, Bobby Conner, Jimmy Conner all of Ahoskie and Joseph Wayne Conner of Murfreesboro, three sisters; Elsie Peoples of Henderson, Shirley Hatcher and her husband Welton of Oak Island and Catherine Phipps and her husband Keith of Edenton, one brother, Edward Bailey and his wife Peggy of Ahoskie.
Also surviving are eleven grandchildren; Jarrett, Ashley, Brandon, Del and Kaitlyn Parker, Elizabeth and Bridgette Conner, Darrin and Alan Lane, Pam Vaughn and John Lamm, nine great-grandchildren; Joshua, Ryan, Ayden, Aliah, Destany, Cameron, Preston, Meghan and Rachel.
Funeral Service: Thursday, January 7, 2010, 7:00 PM at Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church.
The Rev. Taylor Latham, Rev. J. N. Baggett and Rev. Sandy Outlaw will be officiating the service.
A visitation will follow at the conclusion of the funeral service at the church.
Interment Service: Friday, January 8, 2010, 11:00 AM at Aulander Cemetery.
Edna Terry Futrell
August 17, 1915 - November 3, 2009
A little piece of Woodland history died this week with the passing of "Mrs. Edna", as she was known to the many that ate a meal or stopped in for coffee at the Quaker House Restaurant during her 43-year tenure.
Mrs. Futrell was born at her family’s home place near Millennium NC.
She married Mr. A. Marnch Futrell of Woodland, NC. They were married in Greensville County, Virginia, February 1934.
She has been a resident of Woodland for the past 76 years.
She was a member of the Woodland Civic Club, past president of Hebron Baptist Church Women’s Missionary Society, she was a member of the North Carolina Democratic Party committee under Governor Kerr Scott and many years later was appointed to the first committee of the Board of Medical Assistance in 1972 by Governor Bob Scott.
Her heart held a special place for her childhood church Millennium Pentecostal Holiness where she would attend occasional special services.
Aside from her civic minded duties, she had enjoyed a waltz with Mr. Lawrence Welk, met with Guy Lombardo on several occasions, and enjoyed Oral Roberts Revivals.
She had many opportunities to travel.
Mrs. Futrell was an avid reader of poetry and often recited poetry to family and friends when the occasion arose to comfort someone, or put a light spin on life’s little hiccups.
She had a genuine resolve that all people were good, always gave a smile and kind gesture for everyone she met, and never spoke an unkind word in public or private.
She lived what she believed in, a higher power.
Preceding her in death are her mother and father, Elsie Farmer Terry and William Joshua Terry, her husband Marnch Futrell, two sisters; Elsie Parker and Ruth Allen, six brothers; Godfrey, Jackson, Nathan, Woodrow, William and Herbert Terry.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean Anne Lange and her husband, Christian, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, one son, Anthony Futrell and his wife, Lael, of Medina, Washington, one sister, Frances Pritchard and her husband William of Ahoskie and one brother, Hubert Terry and his wife Martha of Tarboro.
Also surviving are seven grandchildren; Dr. Ken Mitchell, Penny Beasley, Lynn Lane, Andy, Charlie, Eric and Roger Futrell, seven great-grandchildren; Trevor Lane, Ryan Beasley, Hannah, Elizabeth, Trace, Mary Kate and Liza Futrell.
Henry Vance Bennett
December 5, 1960 - November 18, 2009
Mr. Henry Vance Bennett, age 48, died on November 18, 2009.
Henry was a native of Northampton County.
He was a graduate of Northeast Academy in Lasker. Following high school, he attended and graduated from Wilson Community College in Wilson.
He was married to Gail Johnson in 1983 and to this marriage was born two wonderful children.
Henry was a member of the Volunteer Rescue Squad and was the current Chief of the Rich Square Fire Department.
He was very active in the Rich Square Baptist Church serving as both deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years.
Henry was co-owner of Bennett Brother’s Farm and Rich Square Cotton Gin.
He was a very loving and caring husband, father, brother and a true friend to everyone who knew him.
Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Dorothy Wheeler Bennett and Henry Alton Bennett and his sister Dotty Harrell.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Johnson Bennett, a daughter, Brittany Bennett, and a son, Corey Bennett, all of the home.
He is also survived by one sister, Juanita Davis of Roanoke Rapids, two brothers; Gene Bennett and his wife Joyce, Steve Bennett and his wife Pat all of Rich Square, North Carolina.

The interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square, North Carolina. The Rev. Bob Rogers will be officiating the service.
James Harlee Harrell
June 14, 1920 - November 23, 2009
Mr. James Harlee Harrell, age 89, died at the Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, on Monday, November 23, 2009.
He was a native of Northampton County.
Mr. Harrell was marred to Dorothy Conner in 1947.
He worked for the Department of Transportation until retiring after thirty years of service.
He was a member of the Rich Square Baptist Church in Rich Square.
Proceeding him in death are his mother and father, Mae Bryant Harrell and James Edgar Harrell, two sisters; Agnes H. Boyce and Wilma H. Evans.
Surviving is his wife, Dorothy Conner Harrell of Rich Square, one sister, Geraldine H. Tucker of Ahoskie and one brother, Milton Harrell of Rich Square.
Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Carleen Baggett Parker
October 9, 1926 - January 15, 2011
Mrs. Carleen Baggett Parker, age 84, died at the Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, on Saturday, January 15, 2011.
Mrs. Parker was currently a resident at the Rich Square Health Care Center.
She was a native of Hertford County, and was married to Thurman W. "Buck" Parker on March 4, 1944.
She worked as at Mylcraft for some thirty-two years retiring as a supervisor.
Mrs. Parker was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church in Roxobel.
She had a great love of children and gardening.
Preceding her in death are her mother and father, Callie Vick Baggett and Walter Baggett, two infant sisters and three brothers; Roy, Robert and Raymond Baggett.
Survivors include her husband Thurman W. "Buck" Parker of Roxobel, North Carolina, currently residing at the Rich Square Health Care Center, two sons; Raymond Parker and his wife Mary Agnes of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and Thomas Parker and his wife Theresa of Roxobel, North Carolina, five grandchildren; Chris Odom, Kimberly Sloop, Ray Parker, Lisa Evans and Renee’ Baker and eight great-grandchildren; Quinton Odom, Derek and Nikki Sloop, Wayne Ray Parker, II, Amelia Lee and Leah Nichole Evans, Luke and Gracie Baker.
Visitation: Sunday, January 16, 2011, 3:00 - 5:00PM at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square, North Carolina.

Everette Gray Liverman
February 28, 1938 - February 10, 2011
Mr. Everette Gray Liverman, age 72, died at the Rich Square Health Care Center on Thursday, February 10, 2011. Mr. Liverman was a native of Hertford County.
He served with the Army National Guard.
He was married to Sonja Martin on May 10, 1958 and to this marriage was born two wonderful daughters.
He was a life long member and deacon of Union Baptist Church.
There, he also served in many other capacities.
Mr. Liverman was the circulation manager of the Roanoke-Chowan News Herald for forty-three years.
He also worked as a farmer, deputy and town policeman.
He owned and operated Liverman Trailer Park.
Proceeding him in death are his mother and father, Velna Brown Liverman and Roy Liverman, two sisters; Beatrice Griffin and Louise Luke and two brothers; C.J. and Merrill Liverman.
Survivors include his wife, Sonja Martin Liverman of the home, two daughters; Robin L. Ward and her husband Sammy, Trena L. Conner and her husband Vernon all of Ahoskie, NC, two sisters; Ruth Miller of Ahoskie, NC, and Carrie Anne Newsome and her husband James of Trenton, TX, four brothers; Levy Liverman and his wife Sylvia of Washington, NC, Raymond Liverman and his wife Minnie, Roger Earl Liverman and his wife Reta and Donald Liverman all of Ahoskie, NC.
Also surviving are three grandchildren; Rachel Ward Smith, Kristen Ward and Bridgette Conner.

Christine Elizabeth Moore
July 16, 1920 - February 10, 2011
Christine Elizabeth Moore, age 90, died at the Our Community Hospital on Thursday, February 10, 2011.
Miss Moore was a native of Halifax County.
She was a member of the Dawson Baptist Church.
Miss Moore worked for Branch Funeral Homes, Inc. for some forty plus years.
She became a licensed funeral director in December of 1966.
She remained with the funeral home as it became Bowling Funeral Home and later Sykes Funeral Service of Scotland Neck.
She was very dedicated to her work as a funeral director serving the families of Scotland Neck, and the surrounding towns; all and all for fifty some years.
She enjoyed her place at the beach, as well she enjoyed shopping and most importantly she enjoyed and loved being with her family.
Her family finds peace in the fact that she is now joined with her other family members in heaven.
Proceeding her in death are her mother and father, Lizzie Hargrove Moore and Frank Moore, nine brothers; Ashby, Lynn, Benjamin, Jesse, Will, Bud, Tom, Ed and Harry Moore, three sisters; Louella Judge, Mary Ednes Rufty and Virginia Moore.
Survivors include one sister, Dallas Turner of Rocky Mount, one brother, Oscar Moore and his wife Shirley of Greenville, NC.
Surviving also is a very special brother-in-law, Tommy Rufty of Scotland Neck.
She is also survived by many dear nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She leaves behind two very dear friends, Jean and Billy Waters.

Maxville Burt Williams, Sr.
November 27, 1933 - January 23, 2011
Maxville Burt Williams (Mac), at the age of 77, died peacefully after an extended illness on Sunday, January 23, 2011.
He was born November 27, 1933 in Edgecombe County and was the youngest son of 10 children of Ernest and Ada Batchelor Williams.
He attended Enfield Graded School, East Carolina University, where he received his BS degree in Social Studies and Master’s Degree in Education.
He taught school in Scotland Neck and was principal of Hobgood Elementary School, Headmaster of Enfield Academy and taught Social Studies at Hobgood Academy until his retirement in the year 2000.
He was an author of two books, "FIRST FOR FREEDOM" and its sequel, "STRANGE WIND FROM THE ROANOKE", and a book of poetry, "REFLECTIONS", which demonstrates his unique sense of humor and love of word play.
He also wrote several plays, "THE SCHROONCHERS", and "TOLERATION", which was performed by the East Carolina Playhouse Theatre during his senior year of college.
The book, "FIRST FOR FREEDOM" was first performed as an outdoor drama in 1976 in Halifax, North Carolina and continues to be performed annually, making it one of the longest running outdoor dramas in North Carolina.
As an avid golfer, he was proud to be able to say he had scored two hole-in-ones.
He continued to love the game of golf, even when he was no longer able to play.
Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Ada Batchelor Williams and Ernest Williams; two sisters; Eula Davis and Ella Balance; five brothers; Andrew Jackson, Clayton, "Red", Tom, and Ernest King Williams.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lois Williams of the home, one daughter, Libbe Williams Sasser and her husband, Tommy and their son, Thomas Sasser III of Nashville, North Carolina and one son, Maxville Burt Williams, Jr. of Kinston, North Carolina; one brother; Russell Williams; and one sister; Millie Bryan, both of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.

Thurman Williford Parker
September 21, 1924 - January 30, 2011
Mr. Thurman W. "Buck" Parker, age 86 died at the Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, on Sunday, January 30, 2011. He was a native of Bertie County and a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church.
He was married to the late Carleen B. Parker on March 4, 1944.
In his earlier years, Mr. Parker worked as a farmer with his father and later became a carpenter, which he did for the rest of his working career.
He loved gardening, fishing and hunting.
He was the biggest kid to all the grown ups, enjoying practical jokes.
Mr. Parker loved and enjoyed the children around the community.
He was very loving to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death is his mother and father, Ida Mae Byrd Parker and Ulysses C. Parker, one sister Hannah P. Martin and one brother, Edward Lee Parker along with several half-brothers and half-sisters.
Survivors include two sons; Raymond Parker and his wife Mary Agnes of Rocky Mount, NC; and Thomas Parker and his wife Theresa of Roxobel, NC; five grandchildren; Chris Odom, Kimberly Sloop, Ray Parker, Lisa Evans and Renee’ Baker and eight great-grandchildren; Quinton Odom, Derek and Nikki Sloop, Wayne Ray Parker, II, Amelia Lee and Leah Nicole Evans, Luke and Gracie Baker.
