AULANDER – Mr. Osie Farmer, Jr., age 62 of Aulander, NC, died Sunday, August 22, 2010.
Mr. Farmer was born September 11, 1947 in Bertie County, the son of the late Osie Farmer Sr. and Margaret Tripp Farmer.
He was also predeceased by his grandparents, Jim and Emma Farmer and James Lawrence, Sr. and Elizabeth Tripp.
Mr. Farmer was a carpenter for many years.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors.
Survivors include his loving companion, Brenda Dawson; his daughters, Laura Joyner and her husband, Greg, and Jennifer Wheeler and her husband, Chad, all of Aulander; two grandchildren, Grayson and Camryn Joyner, both of Aulander; two brothers, Donald Farmer and his wife, Frances, of Harrellsville and Jerry Farmer of Aulander; two sisters, Shirley Farmer House and her husband, Wayne, and Carol Farmer Saunders and her husband, Todd, all of Cary; three nephews, two nieces and five great-nieces. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Aulander Cemetery in Aulander.
The family will receive friends at the Farmer home place in Aulander.
Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Aulander.
Mrs. Gracie Virginia Taylor Lewis
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Gracie Virginia Taylor Lewis, age 95, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Lewis was born August 25, 1914 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Romie Taylor and Sally Duke Taylor.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Murphy R. "Doc" Lewis. She was a member of East Tenth Street Church of Christ.
Survivors include her sons, T.R. Lewis and his wife Carol and Wayne Lewis all of Roanoke Rapids. Two grandchildren, Christopher Wayne Lewis and Timothy R. Lewis and his wife Linda. One great-granddaughter, Ava Brooke Lewis.
Funeral services will be held, Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 3:30 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.
Pearl Pauline Brown Hales
Battleboro, NC - Pearl Pauline Brown Hales, age 53, died December 27, 2009.
Mrs. Hales was preceded in death by her father and mother, Harold William and Della Aycock Brown and her husband, William Allen Hales.
Survivors include her sisters and brothers, Susie Mae Reese, Martha Elizabeth Watson, Debbie Ann Moss, Nannie Belle Holland, Margaret Elizabeth Barnes, Mary Frances Adams, Harold William Brown Jr. and Ernest Leroy Brown.
Funeral services will be held, Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC, with Rev. Carl Green officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home from 7:00 until 9:00 PM Wednesday.
Mrs. Cathryn Boyce Futrell
Woodland, NC - Mrs. Cathryn Boyce Futrell, age 87, of Woodland, NC, died Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie, NC.
Mrs. Futrell was born February 1, 1922 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Joseph H. Boyce and Alethia Melson Boyce. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Daniel M. Futrell. She was a retired seamstress at the Timberlake Casket Manufacturing Co.
Survivors include her daughter, Helen and her husband Joel Early of Ahoskie, NC. Two grandchildren, Joel Early, Jr. and his wife Jackie of Greenville, NC, and Heather E. Lane of Selma, NC. Two great-grandchildren, Daniel E Lane and Lillie Early.
Graveside services will be held, Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Woodland Cemetery in Woodland, NC, with Rev. Ronald McSwain officiating.
Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Aulander.
Linwood Ray Moseley
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Linwood Ray Moseley, age 58 of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Monday, December 21, 2009.
Mr. Moseley was born May 23, 1951 in Halifax County, NC. He was a member of Bears and Smiles. He was preceded in death by his father, Everige Moseley and his step-father, J.C. Norton.
Survivors include his mother Margaret Hux Norton of Roanoke Rapids. His sisters, Debra N. Jones of Nashville, NC, and Cathy Moseley of Lawrenceville, VA. His brothers, John M. Norton of Roanoke Rapids, Johnny E. Norton of Henrico, NC, and Linwood Moseley of Lawrenceville, VA. Also several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held, Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM
Mr. Dennis Day Joyner
Conway, NC - Mr. Dennis Day Joyner, age 60, of Conway, NC, died December 16, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
Mr. Joyner was born October 19, 1949, the son of the late Joseph B. Joyner and Feline Santiago Joyner. He was employed with Georgia Pacific.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Libby" Futrell Joyner. Two daughters, Beth Joyner of Murfreesboro, NC, and Samantha Joyner of Conway, NC. His son, Steve Joyner of Conway, NC. One brother, Jose Centeno of West Palm Beach, Florida. Two grandsons, Ayden Lassiter and Quinton Lassiter. His nephew, Guierllmo Noriego of New York.
Funeral services will be held, Sunday, December 20, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church with Rev. David Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Woodland or Jackson Rescue Squads.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Mr. Claude Bernard Askew
Rich Square, NC - Mr. Claude Bernard Askew, age 88, of Rich Square, NC, died Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.
Mr. Askew was born August 20, 1921 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Claude A. Askew and Rebbie Futrell Askew.
He was also preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Warrick Askew, his brother Walter Askew and a sister, Jessie Sanderson.
He was retired farmer and also retired from Revelle Grain Company. He was a member of Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon for many years and proudly served his country in the US Army.
Survivors include his sons, Timothy D. Askew and his wife Marlene Parker Askew of Asheboro, NC, and B.M. Askew and his wife Rhonda of Comway, NC. His sister, Marguerite Brice of Red Oak, VA. Two grandchildren, Stacey Askew and Charles Askew. Three great-grandchildren, Melinda Askew, Mason Askew and Mallory Askew. Several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, December 19, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, with Rev. David Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Ashley Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Evelyn Jernigan Brantley
Ahoskie, NC - Evelyn Jernigan Brantley, age 80, died Saturday, December 12, 2009.
Mrs. Brantley was preceded in death by her parents, Carlton D. Jernigan and Ida H. Jernigan and her husband, Edward K. Brantley. She was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Joy B. Taylor and her husband, Ricky, of Colerain; her son, Edward K. Brantley Jr. and his wife, Caryl, of Warrenton, VA; her sister, Rachael Taylor and her husband, Ralph; two brothers, Carlton Hughes and his wife, Janet, and Carroll Jernigan and his wife, Elouise; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie with the Rev. Tommy Kiker officiating.
Massey Funeral Home in Aulander handled the arrangements.
Anne Alston Overton
Wilmington, NC - Anne Alston Overton passed away Saturday, December 12, 2009 in Wilmington, NC.
A native of Ahoskie, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Ahoskie for 70 years, where she taught Training Union Class for many years. She was a retired employee of Belk Tyler's.
Survivors include three sons, Royce and David Overton of Mechanicsville, Va. and Dennis Overton of Wilmington, NC; and daughter-in-law, Fran Overton, formally of Ahoskie. She also is survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son John Wayne Overton.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, December 15 at 11:00 a.m. in First Baptist Church of Ahoskie. Rev. Kathy Hulin, of First Baptist Church, will be officiating. A private burial will take place in the Alston Family plot.
Per Mrs. Overton's request, in lieu flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, Russell P. Martin Library Fund, or Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCare Center, 1406 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.

Mary Elizabeth "Lib" Warren
Lasker, NC - Mary Elizabeth "Lib" Warren, age 82, of Lasker, NC, died December 9, 2009 at Rich Square Health Care Center.
Miss Warren was born, September 15, 1927, the daughter of the late Hardy Ellis Warren and Essie Slade Warren. She was also predeceased by two brothers, William and Oliver Warren and her sister, Martha W. Lassiter. She was a retired nurse having worked at NC Memorial Hospital for over forty years. She was a member of Lasker Baptist Church.
Survivors include three nieces, Kathy W. Gibson and her husband Dan of Williamburg, VA, Janet W. Shimanek and her husband Les of Doylestown, PA, and Becky Edmonds and her husband Lloyd of Norfolk, VA. A sister-in-law, Ann D. Warren of Norfolk, VA and one brother-in-law, R.T. Lassiter of Lasker, NC. One great-niece, Lara Gibson of Washington, DC, two great-nephews, Justin Shimanek of Doylestown, PA and Jason Young, US Navy stationed in Afghanistan.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Lasker Baptist Church with Rev. Ricky Barnes officiating. Burial will follow at Lasker Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.
