Mrs. Shirley Byrum Grizzard
Ahoskie, NC - Mrs. Shirley Byrum Grizzard, age 70, of US Hwy 158, Ahoskie, NC, died Monday, September 7, 2009 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.
Mrs. Grizzard was a native of Bertie County and a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church. She was a retired beautician and homemaker. A lady of many talents, Shirley was dearly loved and will be missed by many.
Preceded in death by her father, George Byrum, mother Maggie Byrum, infant daughter, Donna Grizzard and a sister, Jeanette Vandiford.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert T. Grizzard, two daughters Rhonda Askew and her husband Butch, Lori "Sissy" Harrell and husband Dale, two grandchildren Lee Smith and Tricia Bryant and her fiancé Steve Eure, one great-grandchild Breanna, sisters Lennie Williams, Peggy White and husband Earl and her stepmother, Berna Dean Byrum. Ten nephews, five nieces, many great-nieces and nephews and four step-sisters, Kay Harrell, Diane Revelle, Deborah Futrell and Elaine Johnson.
Funeral services will be held, Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Mount Tabor Baptist Church with Rev. Wint Hale officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Mrs. Estelle Pittman Dickens
Weldon, NC - Mrs. Estelle Pittman Dickens, age 89, of Weldon, NC, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Dickens was born January 29, 1920, the daughter of the late John C. Pittman, Sr. and Alice Staton Pittman Flemming. She was also preceded in death by her husband Ira Glenn "Dick" Dickens.
Mrs. Dickens, along with her husband, was owner of the Slipper Shop in Roanoke Rapids, and owned and Antique Shop in Halifax for a number of years. She was a member of Weldon Baptist Church. She was very devoted to her family and a friend to everyone she ever met.
Survivors include her daughter, Connie P. Turner of Littleton, NC. Her sister, Virginia Shell. Her brothers, James A. "Jimmy" Pittman, Gene Pittman, and Johnny Pittman. Her grandchildren, Fran Bailey and Quint Turner and her great-grandchildren, Mia Bailey, Emmie Bailey and Joseph Davis Turner. Also many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, with Rev. Mike Currin officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon, NC.

Mrs. Annie Taylor Bass
Seaboard, NC - Mrs. Annie Taylor Bass, age 87, of Seaboard, NC, died Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mrs. Bass was born June 8, 1922, in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Dempsey Turner Taylor and Jennie Stephenson Taylor. She was also preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Ellis Taylor, Lydia T. Capel, Virginia T. Stephenson, Betty T. Manning, John Taylor, Helen T. Kagels, Dempsey Taylor, Mary T. Mumford and North Taylor.
She was an active member of Seaboard United Methodist Church where she had served as organist and pianist for over fifty years.
Survivors include her husband, Russell Lee Bass. Her children, David Bass and his wife Patti of Franklin, VA; Gary Bass and his wife Gail of Chester, VA; Robert Bass and his wife Lynda of Herndon, VA; and Jennifer Bass Bolton and her husband Pat of Wilmington, NC;
seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Seaboard United Methodist Church with Rev. Carol Taylor and
Rev. Steve Trussell officiating. Burial will follow at Seaboard Cemetery.

Mr. Jesse Frank "Buddy" Love, Jr.
Pleasant Hill, NC - Mr. Jesse Frank "Buddy" Love, Jr., age 64, of Drewett Store Road, Pleasant Hill, NC, died August 27, 2009 at Guardian Care in Roanoke Rapids.
Buddy was born July 7, 1945 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Jesse Frank Love, Sr. and Rachel Cooley Love. He was a retired carpenter and loved music and playing the guitar.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Boone Love. His sons, Charles Love of Clayton, NC, and Doug Love and his wife Pamela of Roanoke Rapids, NC. His step-son, John Rook of Pleasant Hill, NC. His granddaughter, Brittany Love. Three nieces, Mary Love, Denise Beam, Gail Smith and his special little dog companion, "Little E."
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 31, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Barbara Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Sunday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home of his son, Doug Love, 168 Easton Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mr. Wallace Reeves Joyner, Sr.
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Wallace Reeves Joyner, Sr., age 85, of Roanoke Rapids, died August 25, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Joyner was born January 23, 1924 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late Alfred Edward Joyner and Gertrude Barnes Joyner. He was also predeceased by his wife, Eliza Jane Gray Joyner. He was retired from Champion Paper Company and was a member of the Twin City Rifle Club.
Survivors include his children, Linda Joyner Frey and her husband Sewell of Oxford, Maryland, Vickie Joyner Siefferman and her husband Richard of Petersburg, VA and Wallace R. Joyner, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Roanoke Rapids. His grandchildren, Hannah Katlin Joyner, Emily Nicole Joyner, Adam Reeves Siefferman and Sewell Frey, Jr. A sister, Mildred Joyner Schmitt of Virginia Beach, VA.
Graveside services will be private.

Mrs. Leona White Carpenter
Pleasant Hill, NC - Mrs. Leona White Carpenter, age 80, was called to rest on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 surrounded by her family and loving caregivers at Carolina Rest Home in Roanoke Rapids.
Leona was born September 2, 1928 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Ernest White and Ruth Edwards White. She was also preceded in death by her husband John L. Carpenter Sr., a son, Donnie Ray Carpenter, a brother Fleetwood White and two sisters, Evelyn Braswell and Natalie White.
Leona was co-owner of Big John’s Store, Pleasant Hill, NC, from 1968 until failing health. She attended Halifax Community College and received her LPN degree and was a farmer’s wife for many years.
She is survived by a son, John L. Carpenter Jr. and his wife Ginny of Gaston, NC; her daughters, Pam Grant and Debbie Lassiter and her husband Bobby, all of Lasker, NC. Her sisters, Reba W. Mayle of Pleasant Hill, NC, Barbara Ann Kroner of Stafford, VA and Edith Crater of Terrance, California. A brother, Rudolph White of Virginia Beach, VA. Seven grandchildren, John L. "Johnny" Carpenter III, Melissa Carpenter Montoya, Yvonne Cook, Kristy Hollingsworth, Donny Lassiter, Adam Lassiter and Mark Lassiter. Eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Franklin Stansbury and Rev. Chad Manion officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ms. Ella Mae Hall Vinson
Winton, NC - Ms. Ella Mae Hall Vinson, age 87, of Winton, NC, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
Ms. Vinson was born Dec. 23, 1921, the daughter of the late William Andrew Hall and Lula Mae Liverman Hall. She was a member of Winton Baptist Church.
Survivors include her children, Elliott Lee Vinson Jr. of Sunfield, Mich., Robert Eugene Vinson and his wife Kay of Winton, Gloria Jean Vinson Thum and Linda Marie Vinson Jernigan and her husband Steve, all of Murfreesboro and Rebecca Irene Vinson Davidson and her husband Joey of Colerain. 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held, Friday, August 21, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Winton Baptist Church with Rev Joseph Futrell officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Mr. Alvin Wingate Futrell
Potecasi, NC - Mr. Alvin Wingate Futrell, age 87, of Potecasi, NC, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009.
Mr. Futrell was born September 6, 1921 in Conway, NC, the son of the late Jordan Futrell and Betty Joyner Futrell. He was preceded in death by his wife Jimmie Knight Futrell and a sister, Louise Warrick. He was employed for many years with E.B. Lassiter Lumber Company and then worked at Northampton Peanut Company. He was a member of Potecasi Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon.
Survivors include his daughter, Patricia Willoughby and her husband Alton of Woodand, NC, and Pam Cullins and her husband Keith of Como, NC. Two grandsons, Adam Willoughby and his wife Christine of Nicholasville, Kentucky and William Outland Jr. and his wife Cheryl of Seaboard, NC. His brother, Clyde Futrell of Milwaukee, NC, and a sister, Margaret Johnson of Murfreesboro, NC. Two step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held, Friday, August 21, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Potecasi Baptist Church in Potecasi, NC, with Rev. Marcus Pond officiating.

Mr. James Melvin "Dukie" Gregory
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. James Melvin "Dukie" Gregory, age 62, of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday, August 14, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Gregory was born September 3, 1946 in Northampton County, NC. He was pre-deceased by his mother, Frances Inez Gregory and a brother, James "Jimmy" Leon Gregory. He was a Veteran of the US Army and served his country proudly during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Marie Faithful Gregory. His children, Casey Gregory of Red Oak, NC, Samantha Gregory and John Gregory, both of Roanoke Rapids. His father, James Gregory of Roanoke Rapids. His sisters, Sue Brooks and Lola Cornwell, both of Conway, NC. His brothers, Pastor Donald Gregory, Randy Gregory and Gene Gregory, all of Roanoke Rapids and Terry Gregory of Conway, NC. Four grandchildren, Matthew Scott, Devin Tyler, Jamelyn Denise and Shameron Gale. Also his beloved Chihuahua, "Tootsie Roll", his very best friend.

Gaston, NC - Mr. Jasper Turner, Jr., age 51, of Gaston, NC, died Friday August 9, 2009 at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC.
Mr. Turner was born October 25, 1957 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was preceded in death by his father, Jasper Turner Sr. and a sister, Brenda Leggett.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian "Re Re" Shaw Turner. His daughter, Glenda Turner of Roanoke Rapids, a son, Stacy McLeod of Gaston. Two step-children, Amy Gonzales and Jason McLeod, both or Roanoke Rapids. Eight grandchildren. His mother, Lillie Mae Price Turner of Gaston. His sisters, Linda Acree, Vickie Turner and her fiancée Mike Allen, all of Gaston and Cindy McCorkle and her husband Mack McCorkle Jr. of Cary. His brother, Michael Turner and his wife Wendy of Gaston, NC. His aunt, Rose Turner Edwards. His uncles, Bill Turner and his wife Rachel, Reuben Turner and Leslie Turner and his wife Judy. A very special friend, T.C. Connor.
