Edmund Charles Zusin
Charlotte, NC - Edmund Charles Zusin passed away at home, August 5, 2009.
Ed grew up in East Orange, NJ, and earned an electrical engineering degree from Newark College of Engineering and a MBA from Duke University. He was employed for 33 years with IBM working in new product development, systems design and programming and enjoyed seeing the progression of large mainframe computers evolve into small personal computers. His IBM career took him to many parts of the world for business and pleasure. His family and friends, traveling and classical music were his passions.
He leaves behind the love of his life, Betty Lou Hill Zusin, his wife of 28 years. Two surviving sons, Edmund Charles Zusin, Jr. and David Bradley Zusin, both of whom have grown into fine men. A lovely granddaughter, Sommer Ann Zusin. His faithful canine companion, Mike, who remained at Ed’s bedside throughout his illness. His daughter, Audrey Marie Bishop pre-deceased him in death.
A memorial graveside service will be held Friday, August 14, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Jackson, NC, with Rev. Robert Hill officiating.

Mr. Raymond G. Turner, Jr.
Jackson, NC - Mr. Raymond G. Turner, Jr., age 57, of US Hwy 158, Jackson, NC, died Sunday, August 2, 2009 at his home.
Mr. Turner was born December 7, 1951 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry and Mary Turner, Johnny and Sally Johnson, a brother, John Thomas Turner and a uncle, Leon Turner.
He was owner of Turner’s Garage and Wrecker Service, near Jackson since 1973. He was past President and past board member of the Independent Garage Owners Association. He was past President of the Jackson Lions Club where he had served for eight years. Raymond was a strong believer in God, donated to many organizations and charities and the type of man who would help anyone, not expecting anything in return.
Survivors include his wife of thirty years, Johnnie Hale Turner. His father and mother, Raymond G. Turner, Sr. and Clara Bell Johnson Turner of Jackson. His brother, Jack Turner of Newsomes, VA. His son, Raymond Grays Turner, III and his wife Michelle of Gaston, NC. His daughters, Tonya S. Garner and her husband Rocky and Tammy A. Vick, all of Louisburg, NC. His grandchildren, Amanda Turner, Raymond G. "Ray" Turner IV, Ashley Park, Brian Vick, Nicholas Garner, and Eric Goodrich. Special nephews, J.T. Turner and Lucas Turner and a special niece Shelby Barry. Four adopted brothers, Ernest Turner, Nelson Poole, Stuart Harrell and Dickie Smith. A sister-in-law, Patricia Taylor and her husband Billy and a brother-in-law, George Hale and his wife Elaine. Also many other relatives and friends that were special to him.
Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Joe McLean officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Tuesday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Mildred Gregory Cook
Conway, NC - Mildred Gregory Cook, 85, of Conway, died Saturday, July 25, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.
Survivors include a daughter, Janie Marie Barmer; a brother, James Gregory of Roanoke Rapids; two half-sisters, Crethy Bracy of Rocky Mount and Bertha Bracy of Roxobel; a half brother, W.D. Edwards of Seaboard; and a grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 29 at Faison’s Assembly of God Church with Rev. Donald Gregory, Rev. Jackie Wilkie and Rev. R.O. Denton, Sr. officiating.
Burial will follow at Conway Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Tuesday from 7 until 9 p.m.

Linda Kay Sherrick
Enfield, NC - Linda Kay Sherrick, age 45, formerly of Enfield, NC, died Saturday, July 18, 2009 in Wilson, NC.
Survivors include her two sons, Michael and Bobby Sherrick. Her mother, Kathryn "Kitty" Sherrick of Enfield, NC. Her sisters, Alice Bainbridge of Sharpsburg, NC, Joan Ward of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Becky Sherrick of Yancyville, NC. Her brother, Joseph M. Sherrick of Middlesex, NC.
Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC, with Rev. Alvin Davis and Rev. Marc Sanders officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield.

Mrs. Patricia Agnor "Patsy" Lassiter
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Patricia Agnor "Patsy" Lassiter, age 63, of Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mrs. Lassiter was born April 12, 1946. She was a member of Smith United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids.
Survivors include her husband Robert Lassiter. Her son, Ronald Wayne Josey and his wife Kim of Kill Devil Hills and her daughter, Melissa Joann Parker and her husband Roger of Manteo, NC. Her mother, Ann Agnor of Chesapeake, Va. Her brother, Ronnie Agnor also of Chesapeake, VA. Three grandchildren Ashley Hatcher, Katherine Dawn Westcott and Alex Josey. One great-grandchild Kathlenna Graicee Broggi and one step-grandchild Taylor Dale Parker.
A memorial service will be held, Friday, July 17, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Smith United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Curtis Mull officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Thursday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Mr. Clyde C. "William" Spence, Sr.
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Clyde C. "William" Spence, Sr., age 82, of Roanoke Rapids, died Friday, July 3, 2009 at his home.
Mr. Spence was born March 13, 1927 in Halifax County, NC, the son of the late John E. Spence and Fannie Daughtry Spence. He was also predeceased by a son, David Lee Spence. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of First Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Joann Walker Spence. His sons, Clyde Spence, Jr. and his wife Karen of Halifax, NC, Randy Spence and his wife Lavetta Faye of Littleton, NC, and Ronnie Spence and his wife Renee of Roanoke Rapids. His sister, Ruth Spence Muthig of Laurel, Maryland. Seven grandchildren, Michelle Hale, Susan Spence, Robin Spence, Kimberly Pinna, Timothy Spence, Randall Spence and Riley Spence. Five great-grandchildren, Phillip Aycock, Jennifer Hale, McKenzie Spence, Kaitlyn Pinna and Jacob Spence.
Graveside services will be held, Sunday, July 5, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Mr. Suiter Ransome Stokes
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Suiter Ransome Stokes, age 84, passed away, Monday, June 29, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Stokes was born May 3, 1925 in Halifax County, NC. He retired from J.P. Stevens and Company. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Polly Carroll Stokes, his second wife, Bertha Vinson Stokes and his third wife, Lucille Beam Stokes. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Sarah Stokes Rose and her husband Lester of Roanoke Rapids. His step-daughter, Joyce Parrish of Halifax, NC. His grandchildren, Glenda Michelle Tanner, Lester Ray Rose and Leston Erwin Parker. His great-grandchildren, Ryan Tanner, Justin Hess and Angela Rose. Many step-grandchildren including Olya Green and Thomas Green. His step-children Gladys Wall, John Vinson, Eunice Widener, Dorothy Bryant, Linda V. Coker, Gail Jones, Rachel Johnson, David G. Beam, Sr., and Ruth Kay Beam. Many step-great-grandchildren, including Calvin Green, Joshua Green and Lindsey Green. A special niece, Seretha "Princess" Powell, Lisa Clippard, and nephew Louis Vinson.
Funeral services will be held, Thursday, July 2, 2009 at 1:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Mr. John Bennett Stephenson
Garysburg, NC - Mr. John Bennett Stephenson, age 83, of Garysburg, died Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Stephenson was born May 19, 1926 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Turner Taylor Stephenson and Virginia Taylor Stephenson.
Mr. Stephenson graduated from Seaboard High School, attended Augusta Military Academy in Staton, VA, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served in the US Army during World War II. He was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and a farmer.
Survivors include his sisters, Virginia S. Wilkinson of Tarboro, NC, Mildred S. Edwards of Garysburg, NC, and Linda S. Turner of Weldon, NC. Several nieces and nephews and a very special friend, Barbara Cocke of Jackson.
Graveside services will be held, Monday, June 29, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Stephenson Family Cemetery at the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.

Percy Francis Phelps
Windsor, NC - Percy Francis Phelps, age 76, died June 25, 2009 at his home.
Mr. Phelps was born October 12, 1932 in Bertie County a son of the late Percy Everett and Penelope Pierce Phelps. Before his retirement he worked at Lee Lumber Company for 40 years
Survivors include, his wife Mary Francis Phelps, 3 daughters, Patricia Gammon, Peggy Phelps and Sylvia Parker, a son, Everett Phelps, 2 sisters, Dorothy Jean Pierce and Doris June Hoggard and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Windsor Assembly of God with Rev. Thomas H. Todd and Rev. Chuck Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the University Health Systems, Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910.

Ernest Linwood Lawrence
Ernest Linwood Lawrence, 79, of Murfreesboro, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.
He was an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Johnson Lawrence; a daughter, Loraine Davis; and sons, Ronald Lawrence and David Lawrence, all of Chesapeake, VA; three step-sons, David Quinton Parker of Newport and Carroll Keith Parker and Arnold Stacy Parker, both of Murfreesboro; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 26 at Oak City Cemetery, Oak City, NC, with the Rev. Wint Hale officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 25 at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson.
