Mr. Charlie Lee Johnson
Milwaukee, NC - Mr. Charlie Lee Johnson, age 89, of Milwaukee, NC, died Sunday, April 19, 2009 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Johnson was born, Feb. 12, 1920 in Milwaukee, the son of the late Charlie Johnson and Lottie Davis Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Cornelias Lassiter Johnson who preceded him in death in 2001. He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Horace Johnson. Wayland Johnson and Andrew Johnson and three sisters, Elsie Johnson Francis, Willie Grey Johnson Vinson and Pearl Johnson Flythe.
He was a proud World War II Army veteran and served in Germany during World War II. He was retired from the NC State Highway Dept. and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his children, Tommy Lee Johnson and his wife Eva of Milwaukee, and Virginia Rae Johnson McFall and her husband, Don of Bridgewater, VA. Five grandchildren, Angela Johnson Taylor, Lee Johnson, Michele McFall Sheffer, Melissa McFall Fox and Melinda McFall Berkshire. Eight great-grandchildren, Maci, Hudson, Chase, Sydney, Maddie, Trey, Gabby and Jack.
Graveside services will be held, Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Milwaukee Cemetery with Rev. Sidney Collins officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:00 PM.

Mrs. Patricia Dickens Abshire
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Patricia Dickens Abshire, age 71, of Thomas Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC.
Mrs. Abshire was born January 5, 1938 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late Leslie David "L.D." Dickens and Lydia Daniels Dickens. She was a member of First Pentecostal Holiness Church in Roanoke Rapids.
Survivors include her husband, Don G. Abshire. Her children, Chubby Abshire of Greenville, SC, Kip Abshire and Les Abshire, both of Wake Forest, NC, and Donna Inscoe of Littleton, NC. Her sisters, Joyce Dickens of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Betty Bishop of Pineville, Louisiana, and Judy Stanley of Roanoke Rapids. Her brothers, David Dickens of Roanoke Rapids, and Frank Dickens of New Bern, NC. Her grandchildren, Kameron Abshire, Kyle Abshire, Kristopher Abshire, Koy Dillard, Kari Abshire, Joshua Abshire, Claire Abshire, Cole Abshire, Mari Lydia Abshire, and Justin Inscoe.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 3, 2009 at 12:00 Noon at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, with Rev. Margaret Horrell officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service from 12:30 until 1:30 PM at the funeral home.

Mr. Terry Lee Stauffer, Jr.
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Terry Lee Stauffer, Jr., age 40, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Edwards Stauffer; his sons, Terry Lee Stauffer, III and Jacob Stauffer, both of the home; his mother, Ruth Spring and her husband, Michael, of Crestwell, NC; his mother-in-law, Jean Edwards of Roanoke Rapids; his brother, Tim Stauffer and his wife, Crystal, of Seaboard, NC; his sisters, Heidi Stauffer Bridgers and her husband, Win, of Ahoskie, NC, and Wendy Stauffer Spradlin of Milwaukee, NC; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 11 a.m. at New Testament Christian Church in Roanoke Rapids, with Minister Dale Morris officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

Helen Taylor Kagels
Richmond, VA - Helen Taylor Kagels, 96, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009. She was a native of Northampton County, and served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Alice K. Campbell of Richmond, VA; a son, Thomas E. Kagels of Powhatan, VA; a sister, Annie Taylor Bass of Seaboard; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 4 at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Seaboard, with the Rev. Robert Hill and the Rev. Lee Taylor officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 111 Harris Street, Seaboard, NC 27876.

Mr. Edward Kyle Brantley, Sr.
Ahoskie, NC - Mr. Edward Kyle Brantley, Sr., age 82, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
Mr. Brantley was born, Oct. 29, 1926, the son of the late Lee Brantley and Clara Harrell Brantley. He was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church where he had served as a Deacon. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He worked for Lipton Tea Company from 1955 until 1986. He loved gardening, most especially growing tomatoes and grapes.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Jernigan Brantley. His son, Edward Kyle Brantley and his wife Carol of Warrenton, VA. His daughter, Joy Taylor of Colerain, NC. Two sisters, Clara Lee Davidson and Emily Hall. His grandchildren, Eva Godwin, Cary Bowes, Shannon Zagersky and James Edward Taylor. His great-grandchildren, Jacob and Megan Bowes, Stan Godwin, Ivan and Levy Zakersky, Allison and Brook Taylor.
Graveside services will be held, Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Highland Memorial Gardens with Rev. Tommy Kiker officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home.
Mrs. Angelia Frost DeLozier
Weldon, NC - Mrs. Angelia Frost DeLozier, age 96, died Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at Liberty Commons, in Weldon.
Mrs. DeLozier was born August 17, 1912 in Oakland, Maine, the daughter of the late Winfield Frost and Mary Willett Frost. She was also predeceased by her husband, Russell Garr DeLozier and a grandson, Rob Langley. She was a member of Hillcrest Jehovah Witness Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Sylvia M. Langley and her husband, Grady of Roanoke Rapids, and Diana Pope and her husband, Jerry of Fayetteville, NC. Her grandchildren, Nancy Rusk of Haversville, Maryland, Larry Langley and his wife Dayna of Roanoke Rapids, Sherrie Ellis and her husband Jimmy of Hope Mills, NC, and Kelly Pope of Brookline, Mass. A former daughter-in-law, Pamela Langley Driver. Her great-grandchildren, Aaron Langley, Josh Langley, Samuel Langley, David Langley, Michael Pope, Jessica Pierce and her husband, Justin. Her great-great-grandchild, Jacob Pierce.
Graveside services will be held, Friday, March 13, 2009 at 3:00 PM at Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, with Kevin Mallory officiating.

Mrs. Amanda Eloise Stephenson
Garysburg, NC - Mrs. Amanda Eloise Stephenson, age 84, of Garysburg, NC, died March 7, 2009 at Bedford Memorial Hospital in Bedford, Virginia.
Mrs. Stephenson was born April 5, 1924 in Batesburg, SC, the daughter of the late John and Dollier Keisler. She was also preceded in death by her husband Quinton Judson "QJ" Stephenson and two brothers, Theron Keisler and J.B. "Bo" Keisler, both of South Carolina.
Mrs. Stephenson was a member of Garysburg Methodist Church and retired as a seamstress from Fannie’s in Roanoke Rapids.
She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Dollie Glaum of Raleigh, NC, Quinton Stephenson and his wife Sherry of Oxford, NC, Eula Cutler of Roanoke Rapids and Jackie Heffelfinger and her husband Mike of Bedford, VA. Two sisters, Georgia Bailey of Florida and Lorene Gantt of South Carolina. Ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Also many niece and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Garysburg Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 10, 2009 at the home of her daughter, Eula Cutler, 1405 East Circle Drive, Roanoke Rapids from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and will also receive friends at the Garysburg Methodist Church, Wednesday from 1:00 until 2:00 Pm prior to the service.

Mr. Arthur Wayne Edwards
Pleasant Hill, NC - Mr. Arthur Wayne Edwards, age 66, of Pleasant Hill, NC, died Thursday, March 5, 2009 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC.
Mr. Edwards was born July 11, 1942 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Richard Mark Edwards and Hazel Faucette Edwards. He was also predeceased by his son, Chris Edwards and a brother, Frank Edwards. He was employed with Moore’s in Roanoke Rapids, for thirty three years before his retirement.
Survivors include his son, Tyree Wayne Edwards of Rocky Mount, NC. His companion, Gail Baird. His sister, Margaret Daughtry and her husband Vernon of Halifax, NC, and Marie Harris and her husband, Sonny of Weldon, NC. His brother, Hubert Earl Edwards and his wife, Barbara Jean of Halifax, NC. His grandchildren DeAnne Lopez, Joshua Edwards, Tabitha Supernaugh, Jeremy Hardwick, Jarred Edwards, Baylee Edwards and Hannah Baird. Nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held, Monday, March 9, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Jackson Cemetery in Jackson, NC, with Rev. Jim Bell officiating.

Mr. George Robert Francis
Conway, NC - Mr. George Robert Francis, age 72, of Conway, NC, died Friday, December 31, 2010 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.
Mr. Francis was born September 11, 1938 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late George Francis and Nannie Butler Francis.
He was a veteran of the US Marine Corp, a farmer and past President of the North Carolina Watermelon Association. He had served as Town Commissioner for the Town of Severn, a member of the Conway Ruritan Club, a member of Conway Baptist Church and had attended Severn United Methodist Church. He was known as an excellent cook and known for his famous sauce.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne Tart Francis. His step-daughter, Kim Tart of Roanoke Rapids. His brother, Ron Francis and his wife Pam of New Bern, NC. His sister, Kathy Francis Sherman and her husband Bill of Greenville, NC. His step-grandsons, Joshua and Phillip Powers of Conway. Two nieces, Rhonda Francis and Lauren Sherman. Two nephews, George and Jon Sherman. His great-niece, Liliana Sherman.
Funeral services will be held, Monday, January 3, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Conway Baptist Church in Conway, NC, with Rev. William Sherman officiating. Burial will follow at the Conway Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Sunday from 3:00 until 5:00 PM and other times at the home.

Frances Ann Grissom Wheeler
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Frances Ann Grissom Wheeler, age 68, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Guardian Care in Roanoke Rapids.
Mrs. Wheeler was born February 8, 1942 in Roanoke Rapids, the daughter of the late Horace "Buck" Grissom and Annie Belle Cleaton Grissom.
She was a homemaker and a dance instructor. She and her husband, Walter, devoted their time to teaching children to dance. They were leaders of the Roanoke Valley Cloggers who performed for many organizations and clubs, along with volunteering their time to perform at nursing homes and special events. Frances was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Walter W. Wheeler. Her daughter, Crystal Hayes of Roanoke Rapids. Her uncle C.C. Cleaton of Seaboard. Her sister-in-law, Winnie Tripp of Roanoke Rapids. A special niece, Cheryl Lee and a special nephew, Jody Tripp. She is also survived by her extended family of children whom she taught to dance.
