Mrs. Ethel Adkins Craddock
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Ethel Adkins Craddock, age 92, of Roanoke Rapids, died Thursday, December 2, 2010 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.
Mrs. Craddock was born October 28, 1918 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late William David Adkins and Sarah Bernice Green Adkins.
She was also predeceased by her husband, Edmond Levy Craddock and a son, Thurman Eugene Craddock.
Survivors include her sons, Wayne Craddock and his wife, Evelyn of Chesapeake, VA, and David Craddock and his wife, Linnette of Roanoke Rapids.
Her sisters, Marie Berry of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Mary Nance of Aurelian Springs, NC.
Her grandchildren, Matthew Wayne Craddock, Brian Scott Craddock, both of Chesapeake, VA, Sharon Harris of Texas and Joshua Edmond Craddock of Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Also five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Monday, December 6, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, with Minister David Chapman officiating.
Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Sunday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM and other times at 819 East 12th Street, Roanoke Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to East Tenth Street Church of Christ.
Mrs. Doris Gray Carter
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Doris Gray Carter, age 78, quietly made the transition from earth to heaven on Friday, November 26, 2010 at her home.
Mrs. Carter was born February 15, 1932 in Halifax County, NC, the daughter of the late Hervie Lee Gray and Lueallie Leggett Gray.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Charles W. "Butch" Carter, II and a sister, Patricia Ann Witt.
Survivors include her husband, Charles "Woody" Carter of Roanoke Rapids, NC, one brother, William Earl Gray and wife, Vicky of VA Beach, VA, one sister, Nancy Skov of Roanoke Rapids, NC, two sons, Dennis R. Carter and Juanita of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Rusty Lee Carter and wife, Terri of Chesapeake, VA, four daughters, Trudy Currin, Belinda "Sue" Sieber of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Debra Edwards and husband, Harry of Ocala, Florida, and Denise C. Greene of Williamsburg, VA, 51 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Monday, November 29, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Rev. Donald Gregory officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday, November 28, 2010 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M.

Mrs. Anna Laura Gadbaw McElvain
Aulander, NC - Mrs. Anna Laura Gadbaw McElvain, age 94, died Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at Guardian Care in Ahoskie, NC.
Mrs. McElvain was born December 19, 1915 in Rose Valley, Washington, the daughter of the late John and Martha Gadbaw.
She is survived by her son, Ronald Thompson and his wife, Linda of Aulander, NC.
Services will be private.

Mr. Douglas Trainum
Lake Gaston - Henrico, NC - Mr. Douglas Trainum, age 72, died Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at his home surrounded by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Lois Trainum, his brother, Bill Trainum, and his mother-in-law, Ola Sheppard Lanning.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of over forty years, Patricia Congleton Trainum; his children, Douglas Justin Trainum Jr. and fiancee Jackie of Newport News, VA, Brian Thomas Trainum and his wife Nora of Charlotte, NC, and Matthew Trent Trainum of Washington, DC. Five grandchildren, Justin (DJT III) of Portland ME, Alyssa and Jonathan of Elmwood Park, NJ, and Ben and Leo of Charlotte, NC.
His sisters, Jean Moore of Destin, FL, and Elizabeth "Lou" Sheets of Clifton Forge, VA.
His brother-in-laws, Mike Congleton and his wife, Shari of Norfolk, VA, and Roger Congleton and his wife, Dorothy of Petersburg, VA.
A special niece, Andrea Hart and husband, PJ of Petersburg, VA, and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives and many, many friends.
Doug was raised in Augusta Springs, VA, graduated Augusta Military Academy and NNS Apprentice School, and spent most of his adult life in Virginia.
He lived primarily in Newport News and Gloucester, worked for over forty years at Newport News Shipyard and regularly attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Newport News, and Newington Baptist Church in Gloucester.
In his retirement, he enjoyed working at Lake Gaston Rentals, volunteering at Roanoke-Wildwood Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, and was a member of Pleasant Hill Christian Church.
Doug was known for his bright smile, quick wit, and kind temperament.
Whether working in the sheet metal shop in Newport News, square dancing in West Point, VA, or drifting leisurely on his pontoon boat on Lake Gaston, those in his company always found a kind heart and a quick friend.
Never a better companion could one have.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
A memorial service and fellowship will be held Sunday, November 28, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, Gasburg, VA with Pastor Greg Hand officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Doug, to the building fund at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, P.O. Box 550, Gasburg, VA 23857 or to SECU Family House, 123 Old Mason Farm Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27577 (secufamilyhouse.org/donate) in support of their mission to help families during difficult medical situations.

Mr. Walter Johnny Tilley
Gaston, NC - Mr. Walter Johnny Tilley, age 49, of Gaston, NC, died Sunday, November 21, 2010 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Johnny was born April 16, 1961 in Halifax County, NC.
He was predeceased by his father, James Allen Tilley and a brother Timothy Lee Tilley.
He was employed with Redwine’s Garage for many years until his health didn’t allow him to work anymore.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Manning Tilley.
His daughter, Nickie Thompson Tilley.
Four step-children, Jackie Sullivan, Cathy Radford, Dorothy Radford and Gene Radford and his wife Shana.
His mother, Bessie L. Tilley. His sisters, Elizabeth Privette and husband Jerry, Addie Alexander and her husband, Bobby Alexander.
His brother, Jimmy Tilley and his wife, Linda.
His grandchildren, Makayla Fisher, Emily Fisher, JaLynn Fisher, Taylor Arwood, Allyssa Sullivan, Michaela Turner, Steven Sullivan, Landon Turner and grandson, who was his special little fishing buddy, Ryan Turner.
Also many special nephews and nieces including Stephanie O"Neal.
Two very special friends, Ed Killebrew and W.L. High.
A memorial service will be held, Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at 7:00 PM at First Baptist Church in Gaston, NC, with Rev. Tim Andrews officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at the church beginning at 6:00 PM Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Gaston, NC, in memory of Walter Johnny Tilley.

Aulander, NC - Mrs. Janice W. Lassiter, age 68, died Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at her home.
Mrs. Lassiter was born October 24, 1942 in Delaware, the daughter of the late Theodore Wootten and Luetta Wootten.
Survivors include her husband, Franklin "Frankie" Lassiter.
A step-son, Obbie J. Brewington of Millsburg, Delaware.
Funeral services will be held, Friday, November 19, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, with Rev. Bob Deacon officiating. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Thursday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Mr. Henry Lee Clary
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Henry Lee Clary, age 74, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Sunday, November 14, 2010 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC.
Mr. Clary was born October 25, 1936 in Roanoke Rapids, NC, the son of the late Joseph Carl Clary and Helen Powell Clary.
He was also predeceased by his brothers, Lacy McCoy Clary, Robert Clary and J.C. Clary.
Mr. Clary graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School.
He worked for many years at Pine State Creamery in Roanoke Rapids, and for Roanoke Valley Ice Company and retired just a short time ago from Brunswick Ice Company in Lawrenceville, VA.
He was an active member of Quankie Baptist Church and an active Civil War re-enactor and a member of NC 12th Provost Guard, Reilly’s Battery.
He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and a friend to many people and will be missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Reece Clary.
His children, Sue Clary Salvatore and her husband, James of Richmond, VA, Henry Lee Clary, II and his wife, Tonda of Hopewell, VA, Alan Clary and his wife, Nichole of Roanoke Rapids, and Amy Clary Biehl and her husband, Sean of Rocky Mount, NC.
His sister, Patricia Clary Parnell of Roanoke Rapids.
His grandchildren, Justin, Megan, Colton, Amanda, Adam and Victoria Clary, Stephen, and Stephanie Daniels and Samuel Biehl.
Also his beloved pets, Wants and Xena.
Funeral services will be held, Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Quankie Baptist Church with Rev. Henry Stephens and Rev. Mark Pridgen officiating.
Burial will follow at Quankie Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Tuesday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Mr. Robby Allen Smith
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mr. Robby Allen Smith of 1420 E. Chandler Drive, Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Friday, November 12, 2010 at his home.
Robby was born October 20, 1957 in Ahoskie, NC.
He was a heating and air technician.
He was preceded in death by his father, Steve Smith and two grandsons, Earl Abernathy and Matthew Abernathy.
Survivors include his wife, Christine Gregory Smith.
His mother, Bobbette Rose and his step-father Robert "Jack" Rose of Roanoke Rapids.
His step-children, Mary Abernathy of Roanoke Rapids, Leslie Barnes and her husband, Jason of Wake Forest, and Maria Grant of Roanoke Rapids.
His sister, Dinah Taylor and her husband Norman of Roanoke Rapids, his brother, Steve Smith and his wife, Teresa of Roanoke Rapids, and a step-brother, Andy Rose of Roanoke Rapids.
Four grandchildren, Aaron, Sara, Savannah and Victoria.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 17, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Open Door Fellowship, Hwy 158, Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Bobby Turner officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Open Door Fellowship Church.

Cindy Newell Burns
Tucson, AZ - Cindy Newell Burns, age 66, died November 8, 2010 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC.
Cindy was born March 12, 1944 in Pittsburgh, PA.
She was predeceased in death by her parents, George and Mary Newell.
She worked for the Divison of Youth and Family Services for many years as a case worker.
Survivors include her son Brenden Travis Shur of Atlantic City, NJ, her friend Robert of Tucson, AZ, and her ex-husband, Don Shur of PA.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
