Mrs. Ruth Martin Harrup

Conway, NC - Mrs. Ruth Martin Harrup, age 80, of Conway, NC, died Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at her home.

Mrs. Harrup was born May 5, 1930, the daughter of the late Croman Martin and Lassie Barnes Martin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard "Jack" Harrup, her son, Jackie Harrup, her sister, Charity Martin and brothers, William C. Martin, Leo Martin, Mason J. Martin and Jerry Wayne Martin. Ruth was a good and kind lady who loved everyone.

Survivors include her sisters, Fannie Lee Bryant of Pendleton, NC, and Betty Jean Lassiter of Milwaukee. Her brothers, Frankie Jo Martin and his wife, Roselyn of Conway and Thomas Earl Martin and his wife, Patricia of Roanoke Rapids. Two grandchildren, Rainey Powell and her husband, Dennis of Powellsville, NC, and Christopher Rutan of Dover, NC. Two great-grandsons, Wayne Powell and his wife, Shannon and Brandon Powell and his wife, Heather. Her great-great-grandchildren, Cole, Dean and Logan Powell. Her nieces and nephews, Dale Martin and his wife Pam and their children, Randa, Raven, Justin and Austin, Marshall Lassiter, Daryl Lassiter, Shane Lassiter, Robert Bryant, Danny Martin and his wife Jean and their children, Daniel, BJ and Amanda. Cindy Baker and Tommy Jones.

Graveside services will be held, Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Conway Cemetery in Conway, NC, with Rev. Ed Drew officiating.

Connie White Bell

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Connie White Bell, age 42, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Monday, August 16, 2010 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Connie was born May 29, 1968 in Edgecombe County, NC. She was a past manager at McDonalds.

Survivors include her children, Crystal White, Lisa Marie Pierce, James Lee Bell II and Stephanie Nicole Bell. Her parents, Jimmy and Dora Daniels Moore. Her sisters, Brenda Lee Moore and Sabrina Love and her husband Doug. Three grandchildren, Camden Justin Gray, Trevor Brayden Gray and Julia Marie Pierce. Also her very special friend Claude Hollis.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Hazel Ricks Vinson

Conway, NC - Mrs. Hazel Ricks Vinson, age 80, of Conway, NC, died Monday, August 16, 2010 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Mrs. Vinson was born August 15, 1930, in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Napoleon Ricks and Maude Barnes Ricks. She was also predeceased by her husband, Ralph Lowell Vinson and a sister, Mandy Ricks Martin. She was a member of Ashley Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, Wayne Vinson and his wife, Sue of Ahoskie, NC. Her grandchildren, John Thomas Long and his wife, Shannon and Allison Gupton and her husband, Carl. Her great-grandchildren, Megan Powell, Daniel Thomas Long, Billy Long and Olivia Long. Her brothers, Henry Ricks of Roanoke Rapids, Jimmy Ricks of Seaboard, NC, and Bobby Ricks of Gaston, NC. Also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Ashley Grove Baptist Church with Rev. David Ross officiating. Burial will follow at Ashley Grove Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Ashley Grove Baptist Church.

Mr. Len Gray Liverman

Aulander, NC - Mr. Len Gray Liverman, age 56, of Aulander, NC, died Saturday, August 14, 2010 at McQuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, VA.

Survivors include his father, Levy Elbert Liverman of Washington, NC. His brother, Jimmy Liverman of Aulander, NC. His step-sisters Lori McAree of Florida, Lisa Campbell and Liz Liverman, both of Washington, NC. Also several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Oak Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Skeens officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home.

Mr. Billie Graham Davis

Seaboard, NC - Mr. Billie Graham Davis, age 77, of Seaboard, NC, died Saturday, August 14, 2010.

Mr. Davis was born April 5, 1933 in Gadsden, Alabama, the son of the late Eugene "Bud" Davis and Pauline Knighton Davis.

He was retired from the US Air Force. After his retirement from the military, he worked for Dupont for several years. He was a member of Galatia Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of almost 56 years, Doshie Darlee "Sugar Pig" Davis. His son, Tom Davis of Gainesville, VA and his daughter, Debbie Davis Gower of Charlotte, NC. His grandchildren, Christopher Gower and Tiffany Lynn Simpson. One great-grandson, Samuel Simpson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Galatia Baptist Church with Rev. David Foster officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington VA.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Capitol Hospice, 2900 Telstar Court, Falls Church, VA 22042

Mr. Robert Taylor "Big Daddy" Grizzard

Ahoskie, NC - Mr. Robert Taylor "Big Daddy" Grizzard, age 72, of US Hwy 158 West, Ahoskie, NC, died Monday, August 9, 2010 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie, NC, surrounded by family and friends.

Mr. Grizzard retired from Union Camp in Franklin, VA, with thirty years of service and owned his own family business, "Grizzard’s Outlet" in Murfreesboro, for 25 years.

He was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church. He was a generous, compassionate person and a devoted husband, father, and friend to all. Robert was dearly loved and will be missed by many.

Preceded in death by his parents, Wiley and Ruth Grizzard, his wife of 52 years, Shirley B. Grizzard and a infant daughter, Donna Grizzard.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Rhonda Askew and husband, Butch, Lori "Sissy" Harrell and husband, Dale, two grandchildren, Lee Smith and Tricia Bryant and one great-grandchild, Breanna Eure. His sisters, Betty Edwards (Dewey) and Margaret Spruill. His brother, Jody Grizzard (Joan), his step-mother-in-law, Berna Dean Byrum. Five nephews, two nieces and many great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held, Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, with Rev. Jay Brabban officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Tabor Baptist Church.

Mrs. Helen Thomas Hoggard

Aulander, NC - Mrs. Helen Thomas Hoggard, age 93, of Aulander, NC, died peacefully Monday, August 9, 2010 at Bertie Memorial Hospital. She was born January 23, 1917 in Bertie County.

The daughter of the late Jappeth "Jeppy" Thomas and Abby Daisy Hoggard of Windsor. She was predeceased in death by a sister Bessie Bruce Senn of Washington, NC, and a brother, John Michael Thomas, Sr. of Windsor. Also her husbands, Ulysses Hallet Johnson of Windsor, and the late Talmage "Bud" Hoggard of Aulander. Mrs. Hoggard was a member of Connaritsa Baptist Church in Aulander, NC.

Survivors include a sister, Daisy Thomas Younce of Washington, NC, a daughter, Elizabeth Johnson Schoeb of Petersburg, VA, two grandchildren, John William Schoeb, Jr. and Abby Schoeb Binter. Four great-grandsons, Christopher John Michael, Brandon William Schoeb, Alexander Binter and Zackery William Binter. Two devoted nieces, Cynthia Massey and Kaye Thomas. Three nephews, Michael Thomas, Buddy Sumner, Earl Younce and two great-nieces and one great-nephew.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 11, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Massey Funeral home in Aulander, NC, with Rev. James Hester officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, who is handling the arrangements. Interment will follow at Aulander Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Connaritsa Baptist Church in Aulander, NC.

Mrs. Ella Braddock Mumford

Weldon, NC - Mrs. Ella Braddock Mumford, age 87, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2010 at Liberty Commons Nursing Home in Weldon, NC.

Mrs. Mumford was born December 9, 1922 in Brunswick, GA, the daughter of the late Joe Braddock and Ellen Braddock. She was also preceded in death by her husband C.B. Mumford Jr.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy Mumford of Atlanta, GA. Her brother, Leon Braddock and his wife Betty Ruth of Brunswick, GA. Also several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held, Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home of her nephew, Tony Mumford, Bethel Church Road, Pleasant Hill, NC.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Mrs. Mattie Archbell Anderson Bishop

Enfield, NC - Mrs. Mattie Archbell Anderson Bishop, age 97, of Enfield, NC, died Sunday, August 8, 2010 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount, NC.

Mrs. Bishop was born October 17, 1912 in Nash County, NC, the daughter of the late Walter Williamson Anderson ad Mattie Archbell Anderson. She was also predeceased by her husband, Hilton Oris "Red" Bishop and a grandson, Ethan Robert Jones. She was a member of Enfield United Methodist Church.

Mattie was a joy and was known to speak kindness to all. She was a shining example for her extensive family and enjoyed every step of life’s journey.

Survivors include her children, Linda Bishop Jones (Bob) of Rocky Mount, NC, Hilton Oris Bishop Jr. (Judy) of Goldsboro, NC, and Celia Bishop Whitehead of Raleigh, NC. Her sisters, Emma Hamill of Enfield, NC, and Rachel Hamm (Ovid) of Tarboro, NC. Her brother, Harry Anderson (Clennie) of Enfield, NC. Two granddaughters, Angie MacKinnon (Matthew) and Draughn Bishop Whitehead Arnona (Tony). Two great-grandchildren, Holden Hose and Greyson MacKinnon.

Funeral services will be held, Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Enfield United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC, Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Enfield United Methodist Church, 209 Whitfield Street, Enfield, NC 27823.

Mr. Thomas Wesley "Tick" Stephenson

Seaboard, NC - Mr. Thomas Wesley "Tick" Stephenson, age 70, of Seaboard, NC, died Saturday, August 7, 2010 at his home.

Mr. Stephenson was born May 24, 1940 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late James F. Stephenson and Anna Erekson Stephenson. He was a farmer and a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife Nancy Gay Stephenson. His daughters, Deborah S. Bryant and her husband, Mark of Jackson, NC, and Nan S. Lee and her husband David of Emporia, VA. His sister, Jean Katherine Fulcher of New Bern, NC. His brothers, Charles Stephenson and his wife Evelyn of Jackson, NC, and Elliott Stephenson and his wife Lou of Seaboard, NC; three grandchildren, Wesley Bryant, Lindsey Bryant and Kacy Lee. Three nieces and five nephews.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Sloan and Rev. Craig Janney officiating. Burial will follow at Seaboard Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Monday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Carmel Baptist Church.
