Mrs. Nellie Frances Goodson Dix
Conway, NC - Mrs. Nellie Frances Goodson Dix, age 78, of Ashley’s Grove Road, Conway, NC, died Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
Mrs. Dix was born March 25, 1932 in Washington County, VA, the daughter of the late Rev. Moses L. Goodson and Edna Large Goodson. She was also preceded in death by a son, George David Dix.
Survivors include of husband of 57 years, George Lea Dix. Her daughter, Donna Turner and her husband Rev. Bobby Turner Jr. of Roanoke Rapids. Her son, Kenneth Dix and his wife Renee of Conway, NC. A brother, Franklin R. Goodson and his wife Mary of Virginia Beach, VA. A sister, Margaret Rice of Providence, NC. Eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson with Rev. John Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.
Edgar "Moody" Edmonds, Jr.
Jackson, NC - Edgar "Moody" Edmonds, Jr., age 75, of Jackson, NC, died Saturday, May 15, 2010 at his home.
Mr. Edmonds was born October 7, 1934 in Rich Square, NC, the son of the late Edgar Eddie Edmonds and Nellie Harrell Edmonds. He was a Marine and owned his own insulation business for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife, Alice Parks Edmonds. His children, Cheryl E. Lane and her husband Jeffrey of Sahuarita, Arizona, Gary Edgar Edmonds and his wife Crystal of Weldon, NC, Ricky Alan Edmonds of Tucson, Arizona and Lisa Edmonds Zirkle and her husband Mark of Bristow, VA. His sister, Bessie Shieflett of Franklin, VA. Nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held, Friday, May 21, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Jackson Cemetery in Jackson, NC, with Rev. Bobby Turner officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM, Friday prior to services.
Mrs. Ola Mae Johnson Barrett
Seaboard, NC - Mrs. Ola Mae Johnson Barrett, age 89, of Seaboard, NC, died May 11, 2010 at the Sterling House in Rocky Mount, NC.
Mrs. Barrett was born June 9, 1920 in the Creeksville Community of Northampton county, the daughter of the late Willie Edward Johnson and Vivian Weston Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Barrett and three sisters, Pauline Martin, Gertrude Vinson and Mable Johnson.
Mrs. Barrett was a longtime member of Creeksville Baptist Church where she had served as Sunday School teacher, YWA leader, a Deacon and also as church clerk. She retired as the Veteran Service Officer of Northampton county after 21 years of service.
Survivors include her sister, Rachel J. Bryant and her husband Glenn of Maggie Valley, NC; her step-sons, Thomas Barrett and his wife Myra and Bennie Barrett and his wife Paula, all of Seaboard; her step-daughter Vickie Tuggle and husband Larry of Waxhaw, NC; her grandchildren, Chris Green, Thomas Barrett Jr., Teresa Edwards, Wesley Barrett, Emily Barrett, and Frank Tuggle; her great-grandchildren, Zackery Green, Jacob Green, Luke Green, Ryan Barrett, Lauren Barrett and Macie Edwards. Also many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, May 15, 2010 at 3:00 PM at Creeksville Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Sloan officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Friday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Mrs. Shirley Gay Massey
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Shirley Gay Massey, age 74, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mrs. Massey was born August 26, 1935 in Danville, VA, the daughter of the late Woodrow M. Gay and Mollie Farthing Gay. She was also predeceased by a sister, Jemme Russell and a brother, Charles Gay. She was a member of Quankie Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Herman Massey. Her daughter, Deborah Miles and her husband Allen. Her sister, Bernice Carter.
Her grandchildren, Brandy Ann Jenkins and Joshua Lewis Miles and two great-grandchildren Jordan Clay and Dylan Clay.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Ouankie Baptist Church with Rev. Grady Dickens and Rev. Jerry Boyd officiating. Burial will follow at Quankie Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home.

Graham Dempsey
Chesapeake, VA – Graham Dempsey peacefully entered into eternal rest with our Lord Jesus Christ at his home in Chesapeake, VA, on Sunday, May 9, 2010.
Mr. Dempsey was preceded in death by his parents, Van and Gracie Dempsey, and brothers, Van and Bobby Dempsey.
Graham grew up on a Tobacco farm, loving the outdoors. He enjoyed sports, especially NASCAR, an avid fan from the 50s. His love of the sport came from understanding the inner works of cars having been in auto parts and Dupont paints for 30 years, affording him the opportunity to assist several race car drivers and owners.
He graduated from Aulander High School, NC, with 12 years of perfect attendance.
Graham is survived by his devoted wife, Linda, his twin sister Gurtrude Davis of Ahoskie, sisters Inez Overton and spouse Mutt of Ahoskie, Rachel Morris and spouse LeRoy of Aulander, NC, Trolly Doughtie and spouse Raymond of Aulander, NC. Brother Stanley Dempsey and spouse Faye of Spring Lake, NC. Also, 17 nephews and nieces.
Graham suffered with Muscular Dystrophy, though it never hindered him from serving God, family and friends.
Visitation with family will be a Celebration of his passing unto the joys of Heaven held in the home at 605 Crimson Ivy Lane, Chesapeake, VA, on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 4:00 PM.
Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, NC.
Mrs. Ruby Royal Daniels
Raleigh, NC - Mrs. Ruby Royal Daniels, age 88, of Raleigh, and formerly of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Monday, May 3, 2010 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC.
Mrs. Daniels was born September 2, 1921, the daughter of Timothy Royal and Viola Slaughter Royal. She was also predeceased by her husband Charles Daniels, former owner of Daniels Barber Shop. She was a member of Rosemary United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her children, Carolyn Daniels Dail and her husband Harry of Clayton, NC, Charles E. Daniels and his wife Colin of Cary, NC, and Terry Lee Daniels and his wife Linda of Fort Myers, Florida. Her grandchildren, Leslie Anne Hutchens, Christopher Chad Daniels, Justin Daniels, and Jeffery Harrison Dail. Her great-grandchildren, Kirsten Olivia Daniels, Kaitlyn Daniels, Summer Daniels, Candace Harbin Winters, Sarah Hutchens, Tristen Paige Daniels, Jefferson Dail, Nathan Dail and Logan Winters.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Rosemary United Methodist Church in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Jim Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.

Mr. Clinton Wilson Willey
Halifax, NC - Mr. Clinton Wilson Willey, age 80, of Justice Branch Road, Halifax, NC, died Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Nash General Hospital.
Mr. Willey was born September 9, 1929 in Halifax County, the son of the late Henry B. Willey and Elsie Butts Willey. He was a retired farmer served his country in the US Marine Corp.
Survivors include Sharon Cates of Burlington, NC, and Vicki Brand of Halifax. A step-daughter, Gail Adams of Peculiae, Missouri. His sister, Margaret Benford of Roanoke Rapids. Two grandchildren, Lauren Farris and Andrew Farris.
A graveside service will be held, Sunday, May 2, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Willey Family Cemetery, Justice Branch Road, Enfield, NC.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dallas Jones Veterans Museum, 1620 East Tenth Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.

Mrs. Veronica "Ronnie" Stephenson Byrd
Severn, NC - Mrs. Veronica "Ronnie" Stephenson Byrd, age 67, of Severn, NC, died April 28, 2010.
Mrs. Byrd, also known to many as "Nana", was born August 11, 1942 in Johnston County, NC, the daughter of the late Earl Junious Stephenson and Maxine Lassiter Stephenson. Ronnie worked for many years at Seaboard Manufacturing Company, Pine Forest Rest Home in Potecasi and with Home Health.
Survivors include her husband, Harvey Paul Byrd, Sr., Her children, Harvey Paul Byrd Jr. and his wife Linda of Pendleton, NC, Earl Judson Byrd and his wife Rhonda of Wilson, NC, William Henry Byrd and wife Teresa of Franklin, VA, Cynthia Vaughan and her friend Wayne Hedgepeth of Severn, Debra Summers and her friend Johnny Pergerson of Milwaukee, NC, and Lisa Byrd Temple of Seven Springs, NC.
Her sisters, Wanda Baker and husband Gary of Nags Head, NC, Kitty Weiskopf and husband Frank of Canton, Maryland, Nancy Latone and her husband Dave of Rochester, NJ, Donna Futrell and her husband Roby, of Conway, NC, and her brother Jennings Stephenson and wife Bert of Lindellwall, NJ. Thirteen grandchildren Amanda, Erin, Judson, Dawn, Kyrstie, Skylar, Jay, Jennifer, Sandy, Wesley, Brittany, Brooke and Summer and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 4:00 PM at Severn Baptist Church, Severn, NC, with Rev. Brent Hobbs officiating. Burial will follow at Milwaukee Cemetery, Milwaukee, NC.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Friday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.

Ahoskie, NC - Gary Scott Dempsey, age 60, of Ahoskie, NC, died Tuesday, April 27, 2010.
Survivors include his sister, Dean White and her husband Larry of Aulander, NC. Two daughters, Vickie and Kelly Dempsey. His niece, Tracy White.
Graveside services will be held, Saturday, May 1, 2010 at 1:00 Pm at Aulander Cemetery with Rev. Tommy Kiker officiating.

Miss Laura Kathleen Carter
Potecasi, NC - Miss Laura Kathleen Carter, age 83, of Potecasi, NC, died Friday, April 23, 2010 at Hampton Woods Nursing Home in Jackson, NC.
Miss Carter was born November 8, 1926 in Pender County, NC, the daughter of the late Robert C. Carter and Mildred Garner Carter. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Clarence Carter, Robert J. Carter and Nathaniel Carter.
Survivors include her sisters, Shirley Flythe and her husband D.B. Flythe Jr. of Conway, Louise Carter of Potecasi and Mildred C. Arnold of Morehead City, NC. Also many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Monday, April 26, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Potecasi Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Travis Henderson officiating.
