Edith Parker Vinson
Murfreesboro, NC - Edith Parker Vinson, age 89, died January 8, 2010 at Sentara Nursing Center in Chesapeake, VA.
A native of Hertford County, Mrs. Vinson and her late husband, Melvin H. Vinson Sr., were long-time residents of Murfreesboro.
She was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church. A daughter of the late Eugene Parker and Sallie Holloman Parker Jenkins, Mrs. Vinson was preceded in death by a sister and brother, Etta Parker Dilday and Thomas Parker.
Mrs. Vinson is survived by two sons, Melvin H. Vinson, Jr. (Carol) of Chesapeake, VA and Gene P. Vinson (Henrietta) of Ahoskie, NC; three grandchildren, Renee Garner (Douglas) of Chesapeake, Brent Vinson (Stacy) of Moyock, NC, and Parker Vinson of Raleigh, NC; and three great-grandchildren, Joshua High, Blake Vinson and Sydney Vinson.
Graveside services will be held, Monday, January 11, 2010 at 11:00 AM at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Murfreesboro Baptist Church or to an organization of one’s choice.
Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.
Mr. Darren Ray Martin
Tunnell Hill, GA - Mr. Darren Ray Martin, age 45, of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, went to be with the Lord, January 6, 2010 at Hamilton Medical Center.
Darren was born April 27, 1964 in West Virginia, son of the late Ray and Cheryl Martin. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Grant and Marguerite Hanlon and Mack and Ida Martin
He is survived by his wife, Angie Taylor Martin; his brother, Kevin Martin of Spring City, TN; sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Andy Folsom of Maine; his fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law, Gene and Louise Taylor of Gumberry, NC, and Robert and Georgia Taylor of Seaboard, NC; his brothers-in-law, Edward Taylor of Gumberry, Zachary Taylor of Raleigh, Ron Pippen of Elizabeth City; sister-in-law Wendy Gatewood and husband Chris of Clayton, NC; nephews, Blake ad Brandon Folsom, Mark and Andrew Gatewood.
Services to celebrate the life of Darren will be held, Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 2:00 PM at the Harvest Baptist Church with Reverend Gary Evans officiating. Graveside services will be held, Monday, January 11, 2009 at 2:00 PM at the Taylor Family Cemetery in Gumberry, NC.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Harvest Baptist Church, 3986 Cleveland Hwy, Dalton, GA 30721.

Mrs. Josephine Garrett Wynne Braswell
Enfield, NC - Mrs. Josephine Garrett Wynne Braswell, age 92, passed away Saturday, December 24, 2011 at Autumn Care in Nashville, NC.
Mrs. Braswell was born September 8, 1919 in Enfield, NC, the daughter of the late Benjamin Wynne and Willie "Bobbi" Bumpus. She was also predeceased by her husband Thomas Nebraska Braswell, her siblings, Joseph Wynne, Sadie Wynne Taylor, George Wynne, John Wynne and Benjamin Wynne. She was a life long dedicated member of Enfield Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son Thomas Braswell of Enfield, NC, her daughter Barbara Grace Braswell of Winston Salem, NC, her nephews Philip Taylor and his wife Joyce, Stanley Wynne and his wife JJ, Jeffrey Wynne and his significant other Francis and a niece Ann Ellis and her husband Pete.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Enfield Baptist Church with Rev. Dallas Prestwood and Rev. Kerry Peeler officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Enfield, NC, Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Mrs. Jewel Gay Whitley
Littleton, NC - Mrs. Jewel Gay Whitley passed away Friday, December 23, 2011 at her home.
Mrs. Whitley is survived by her husband of 63 years, Earl Whitley. Her children, Paula Dixon and her husband Larry of Roanoke Rapids, Chris Whitley and his wife B.J. of Roanoke Rapids, and Teresa Keeter and her husband Ken of Rocky Mount, NC. Also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held, Monday, December 26, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Monday December 26, 2011 from 10:00 AM until service time.
Mr. Lawrence M. "Sam" Dezern
Lucama, NC - Mr. Lawrence M. "Sam" Dezern, age 72, of Lucama, NC, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2011 at Wilson Medical Center.
Sam was born September 21, 1939 in Orange County, NC, the son of the late Grover Dezern and Clara Clark Dezern. He retired from the US Coast Guard with 21 years of service. After retirement, he owned his own trucking company.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Moody Dezern. His sons, Sam Dezern and his wife Becky of Fremont, NC, Darren Sismour of Greenville, NC, Peter Dezern of Tampa, Florida, and Mark Phelps and wife Tina of Chesapeake, VA. His sisters, Ann Childers, Marie Dezern, Geraldine Nash, Minnie Dezern, Martha Gayle Dezern and his brothers, Jack Dezern, David Dezern and George Dezern. His mother-in-law, Nettie Alice Moody of Seaboard and his sister-in-law Connie Hargrave of Garysburg, NC. His grandchildren, Jason, Titus, Kristen, Taylor, Cameron and Casey.
A memorial service will be held, Monday, December 26, 2011 at 6:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, with Rev. Ricky Barnes officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

Robert Henry Rose
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Robert Henry Rose, 69, died Wednesday, December 14, 2011. Mr. Rose was born on April 19, 1942 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He was the only child of Roy and Mildred Rose.
He graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After serving his country, he returned to Roanoke Rapids and began a career with the North Carolina Department of Corrections.
In 1970, he married Bobette Butler. Together, they reared four children: Dinah, Dennis, Robby, and Andy. After retiring from the State, Mr. Rose worked security for the Department of Social Services in Halifax County.
Mr. Rose is survived by his wife, Bobette Rose, and three children, sons, Dennis Smith and Andy Rose, and daughter, Dinah Taylor, all of Roanoke Rapids. Robert, known affectionately as "Jack", was a loving husband, caring father, and cherished friend.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids from 3 PM to 5 PM Sunday, December 18, 2011.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, December 19, 2011 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with an honorable military burial to follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Elliott Lee Vinson, Sr.
Murfreesboro, NC - Mr. Elliott Lee Vinson, Sr., age 90 of Murfreesboro, NC, died Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at his home.
Mr. Vinson was born March 15, 1921 in Hertford County, NC, the son of the late Gamma Vinson and Myrtis Mitchell Vinson. He was member of Meherrin Baptist Church and owner of Vinson Drainage Company.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ella Mae Vinson, his brothers, Woodrow and Elton Vinson and his sisters, Flora Harrison and Anne Brown.
Survivors include his wife Polly S. Vinson, his children, Elliott L. Vinson, Robert E. Vinson Sr. and his wife Kaye, Gloria Williams, Linda Jernigan and Becky Davidson an her husband Joey. His stepchildren, Fawn, Don and Kevin Ryan. Twenty four grandchildren, sixty four great-grandchildren and twelve great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held, Friday, December 16, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Meherrin Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church fellowship hall.

Douglas Earl Moore
Murfreesboro, NC - Douglas Earl Moore, age 69, passed away December 11, 2011 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC. Douglas was born on April 7, 1942 in Beaufort County, NC, the son of the late Earl Duffy Moore and Elsie Whitley Moore. He was also preceded in death by a sister Peggy Dare Moore.
Survivors include his sister; Myrtie Moore Britton of Aulander, NC, his nephew; Timothy Earl Turner and wife Sebrina of Murfreesboro, NC, his niece; Heidi Dare Jenkins and husband David of Murfreesboro, NC, his great-nephews; Timothy Earl Turner, Jr., Travis Shane Turner, Trenton Heath Turner and Zachary Chase Jenkins all of Murfreesboro, NC.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, December 15, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Meherrin Baptist Church Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC, with Rev. Hilton Farrow Moore officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of Myrtie Britton, 925 NC 561 West, Aulander, NC 27805.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart and Diabetes Association.

Virginia Maddrey Brooks
Raleigh, NC - Virginia Maddrey Brooks, 93, of Raleigh, died on December 10, 2011, after a period of declining health. Born in Seaboard, North Carolina, on June 2, 1918, she was the daughter of H. Carlton Maddrey and Martha B. Maddrey.
Virginia was predeceased by her husband, James E. Brooks, her parents and her sisters, Dorothy M. Norton and Jean M. Wilson.
She is survived by her sister, Ellen M. Davis, of Raleigh and many devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Following her education at Woman’s College (U.N.C.- Greensboro), Virginia moved to Raleigh, where she lived for the remainder of her life. A career state employee, the position which she enjoyed most was many years of service as the personal assistant to the late Thad Eure, Secretary of State of North Carolina.
Graveside service will be held at the Seaboard Cemetery at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 14. 2011.

Agnes Louise Strickland Smith
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Agnes Louise Strickland Smith, age 91, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away December 10, 2011 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC. She was born June 18, 1920 in Dunn, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her daughter Wilma Louise Smith, her son James Etheridge Smith and her husband James Robert Smith.
Survivors include her four daughters; Alma Smith Williams, Linda S. Smith, Constance Smith Tudor and Betty Lou Smith Johnson and husband Harry. Her three sons; Clarence Lee Smith and wife Kay, Robert Glendon Smith and wife Lou and Dennis Dean Smith and wife Kaye. Also 19 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Sunday, December 11, 2011 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 12, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Rev. Dennis Joyner officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon, NC.
