Kathy Williams Bell
Aulander, NC - Kathy Williams Bell, age 61, of Aulander, NC, passed away December 9, 2011 at her home. She was a wonderful mother who battled cancer for eleven years. She fought so long to be with her kids and grandchildren.
Kathy was a former secretary and homemaker. She was born on May 24, 1950 in Halifax County North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her father Irvin Fleetwood Williams.
Left to cherish her memory, her two daughters; Holly Mathias and husband Kevin of Ahoskie, NC, and Crystal Johnston and husband Zach of Aulander, NC. Her former husband; Gerald Bell of Aulander, NC. Her two grandchildren; Annabell Mathias and Noah Johnston. Her mother; Nellie Mae Wheeler. Her two brothers; Kenny Williams and wife Nell Dean of Jackson, NC, and Ricky Eugene Williams of Woodland, NC.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, with Rev. Bob Skeens officiating. Burial will follow in Job Cemetery in Aulander, NC.
The family will receive friends Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Lorene Pair Davis
Emporia, VA - Lorene Pair Davis, age 81, of Emporia, VA, passed away November 28, 2011 at her daughter’s house in Glen Allen, VA. Lorene was born February 4, 1930 in Greensville County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Thomas Benjamin Pair and Etta Newsome Pair.
Survivors include her sister Louise Edwards of Emporia, VA; Her two brothers Henry Pair of Emporia, VA and Laury Pair of Suffolk, VA; Her daughter Jennifer Gilbert and husband J. Lee of Glen Allen, VA; Her son Glenn E. Small of Sutherland, VA and several grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Greensville Memorial Cemetery with Minister Richard L. Thomas officiating. Entombment will follow at the Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, Thursday, December 1, 2011 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM prior to the graveside service.

Birthan "Bill" Ray Johnson, Sr.
Como, NC - Birthan "Bill" Ray Johnson, Sr., age 86, of Como, NC, passed away November 22, 2011 in Franklin, VA, the son of the late Samuel P. Johnson and John Beulah Vaughan Johnson. He was born on November 5, 1925 in Roxobel, NC.
Bill was a United States Army Veteran serving in World War II and his family was very proud of him as he served our great nation in our country’s time of war. Bill then worked and retired as a machinist from Newport News, VA shipyard.
Survivors include his loving wife of 34 years Ethel Louise Johnson of Como, NC. His three sons; Rev. Roger D. Johnson and wife (Bettye) of Suffolk, VA, Birthan Ray Johnson, Jr. of South Carolina and Larry Vanover and wife (Joann) of Newport News, VA. His two daughters; Sandra Morton and husband (Hiriam) of Newport News, VA and Sharon Wilson and husband (Don) of Virginia Beach, VA. His two step-sons; Herbert and Donald Watson. His eleven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with Military Honors will be held Friday, November 25, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Woodland Cemetery with Rev. Roger D. Johnson officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday, November 25, 2011 from 12:30 until 1:30 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, and then go in a funeral procession to the cemetery.

Robert "Froley" "Swede" Erickson, Sr.
Tappahannock, VA - Robert "Froley" "Swede" Erickson Sr., passed away peacefully Monday, November 21, 2011 at his son's home in Tappahannock, Virginia. He was born in Youngstown, OH, on June 8, 1917 and at the age of 4, moved to Swede Hill in Jamestown, NY. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice.
Survivors include a son, Robert Jr.; two grandchildren, Robbie and Megan and two nephews, Benjie and Mitchell Thompson and family of Cary, NC.
His athletic talents were noticed by scouts from Syracuse University and as part of his scholarship, he went to Fork Union Military Academy in VA. He decided Virginia was for him and he transferred to the University of Richmond where he excelled in both football and basketball (team Captain). He was always remembered for his touchdown catch that beat The University of North Carolina, 14 to 13.
He proudly served in the United States Navy and after the war, he became the Athletic Director of McGuire's Veteran's Hospital. He met Alice Mitchell Erickson who was a nurse there and they married in 1947. He moved into the tobacco business and was employed by Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company where until his retirement he was Superintendent of Manufacturing in Richmond and later Durham.
After retirement, he was proud to volunteer for the Duke Children's Hospital, especially the Duke Children's Classic and the Durham Sertoma Club. He loved his Duke Basketball and all sports and stayed very independent and active until recently.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Robert Erickson, Sr. will be held Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 1:30 PM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, with Mike Halsted officiating. Interment will follow in Aulander Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:20 PM prior to service and after the service at Ann Early’s house in Aulander, NC.

Harvey Lee White, Jr.
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Harvey Lee White, Jr. age 89, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away November 12, 2011 at Inpatient Hospice Facility in Greenville, NC, surrounded by his loving family. Harvey was born May 26, 1922 in Northampton County, North Carolina, the son of the late Harvey Lee White, Sr. and Dorothy Rebecca Justice White. He was also preceded in death by his wife Mary Frances Hux White and a son Dale White.
Mr. White retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after 22 years of service to our country.
He is survived by his daughters; Debbie Demers and husband Joe of Westbrook, Maine, Susan Glover and her husband Steve of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Mary LaChance and husband Armand of Raymond, Maine; His son Lee White and wife Kate of Beaumont, Texas; His grandchildren Michelle, Carol, Tina, Jimmy, Christy, Beth, Steven, Patrick, Alex and Anne; His twenty three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Rev. Dennis Joyner officiating.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home of Susan Glover 910 Rapids Street.

Murfreesboro, NC - Mary Hagwood Coggins, age 90, of Murfreesboro, NC, passed away on November 11, 2011 at Guardian Care of Roanoke Rapids, NC. Mary was born on December 8, 1920 in Portsmouth, VA the daughter of the late William David Hagwood and Myrtle Elizabeth Drew Hagwood. She was also preceded in death by her husband Albert C. Coggins, Sr. and her son Albert C. Coggins, Jr.
Survivors include her daughter Mary Coggins Lassiter of Murfreesboro, NC; Her son Paul R. Kalamaras of Richmond, VA; Seven grandchildren Jesse Coggins, David Lassiter, Liz Dunlow, Greg Kalamaras, Jeffrey Coggins, Jeremy Coggins and Joyce Coggins also five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 14, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Rev. Robert May officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro, NC.
The family will receive friends Sunday, November 13, 2011 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, from 3:00 until 5:00 PM.

Roxobel, NC - Laura Newsome Bracy Smith, age 87 of Roxobel, NC, passed away November 7, 2011 at her home. Laura was born on October 20, 1924 in Bertie County North Carolina the daughter of the late Charlie Matt Bracy and Lalla Teaster Bracy. She was also preceded in death by her husband Charlie Everett Smith, Sr. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include her three daughters; Sandra L. Buchite of Palm Coast, FL, Laura S. Traylor and husband Steve of Eure, NC, and Susan S. Godwin and husband Buck of Newton Grove, NC. Her two sons; Charlie Everett Smith, Jr. and wife Diane of Hampton, VA and Robert D. Smith and wife Theresa of Newport News, VA. Her brother; Malcolm Bracy and wife Joyce of Ahoskie, NC. Her six grandchildren; Robert E. Lane, Jennifer L. Marshall, Michael S. Smith, Allison P. Smith, Emily L. Smith and Stephanie T. Riddick. Also eleven great-grandchildren.
Graveside Services will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery with Rev. Dave Rimel officiating.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, from 7:00 until 9:00 PM and other times at her home 416 Tyler School Road Aulander, NC.

WILLIAM DOUGHTIE
Winton, NC - William Howard Doughtie, 89, of Winton, NC, died November 5, 2011 in Ahoskie at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital with his family by his side.
Mr. Doughtie was born in Hertford County and was the son of Cola William Doughtie and Willie Leggett Doughtie. He graduated from Ahoskie High School, served in the US Navy for six years and returned home to become a farmer.
He married Genevieve Baker on May 30, 1947 and was happily married for 55 years until her death in 2002. He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was a member of Winton Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon for many years. He was a member of Winton Masonic Lodge 0723.
Preceding him in death are his wife, Genevieve Baker Doughtie and brothers, Raymond Doughtie, Cola Doughtie, and Ray Doughtie.
Mr. Doughtie is survived by his three daughters, Elaine Coburn (husband, Ronald), of Winton, Betty Jones of Aulander, and Janet Scott (husband, Hal) of Winton; a sister, Barbara White (husband, Scarborough); seven grandchildren, Forrest White, Jana Pierce (husband, Adal), Will Jones, Verble Jones (wife, Kim), Mark Coburn, Farrah Hampton (husband, Mitch), and Lanie Scott; and six great-grandchildren, Logan Whitfield, Kirsten Baggett, Breanna Coburn, Daymon Baggett, Evan Hampton, and Lon Pierce, and ten nieces and nephews.
Special thanks goes to Nancy Wall, a dear and faithful friend, Dr. Semaan Khoury, the members of Winton Baptist Church, Rebecca Perry, and all the staff and friends at Brian Center in Windsor, NC.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 7, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Winton Baptist Church with Rev. Joseph Futrell officiating. Interment will follow in Stoney Creek Cemetery, Ahoskie.
The family will receive friends Sunday November 6, 2011 in the fellowship hall of Winton Baptist Church from 6:00- 8:00 PM and other times at the home of Hal and Janet Scott, of Winton NC.

Aulander, NC - Anne Romito Mayhood, age 93, of Aulander, NC, passed away November 4, 2011 at Virginia Beach General Hospital in VA Beach, VA. Anne was born March 31, 1918 in Minnesota the daughter of the late Stephen Romito and Armalinda Ficera Romito.
Survivors include her daughter; Marlinda Akkerman and husband Klaas of Aulander, NC; Her step-daughter, June Jeanetta of North St. Paul, MN; Her 4 sons, Corky Mayhood of Bonita Springs, FL, Steve Mayhood of Orange Springs, FL, Brian Mayhood of Norfolk, VA and Keith Mayhood of Brainard, MN. Seventeen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Anne Mayhood will be held Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, with Rev. Joe Lassiter officiating.
The family will receive friends at other times at the home 106 Pine Drive Aulander, NC 27805.

Rich Square, NC - Dan Eugene Bagley, age 82, of Rich Square, NC, passed away October 28, 2011 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC. Dan was born April 4, 1929 in Arizona. He was a Veteran of War.
