Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Ernestine Van Hook Leonard, age 87, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.
Mrs. Leonard was born October 7, 1924 in Nash County, NC, the daughter of the late Joseph William Van Hook and Savannah Victoria Rackley Van Hook. She was also predeceased by her husband Kemp Battle Leonard and a sister, Jean Van Hook Hathaway. She was retired from the US Department of Agriculture and worked as a peanut grader. She was a member of Rosemary Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Susan L. Stephenson and her husband Barham of Garysburg, NC, and Judy L. Collins and her husband Vance of Roanoke Rapids. Her brother, David Victor Van Hook of Virginia Beach, VA. Four grandchildren. Joe Shaw of Roanoke Rapids, Susan Lynn Stephenson, Louis Froelich and Henry Barham Stephenson all of Garysburg.
Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, October 25, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating. Graveside services will take place at Forest Hills Cemetery in Nashville, NC, at 2:00 PM.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, Monday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM and other times at the home, 1406 West Circle Drive, Roanoke Rapids.
Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society.
VIRGINIA JOHNSON
Colerain, NC - Mrs. Virginia Dare Miller Johnson, age 88, of Colerain, NC, died Thursday, October 20, 2011 at her home.
Mrs. Johnson was born July 20, 1923 in Bertie County, NC, the daughter of the late Norman Lee Miller and Hattie Belle Todd Miller. She was also predeceased by a son, Jonathan Johnson Jr.
She was a member of Ross Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband Jonathan Johnson. Her children Tommy Ray Johnson and his wife Phyllis of Colerain, NC, Randy Johnson and his wife Melody of Windsor, NC, Eddie Johnson and his wife Pat of Colerain, NC, Esther Johnson of Colerain, NC, Betty Jean Mathews nd her husband Charles of Hertford, NC, and Peggy Johnson of Colerain, NC. Her sister, Marie Hoggard of Windsor, NC. Nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Ross Baptist Church with Rev. Roger Kiker, Rev. J.N. Baggett and Rev. Jeff Russell officiating. Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC. The family will receive friends at the home.
Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC.
HENRY JONES
Windsor, NC - Henry Kirkland Jones, age 70, passed away October 17, 2011 at Brian Center in Windsor, NC. Henry was born July 26, 1941 in Hertford County North Carolina the son of the late Eddie Jones, Sr. and Minnie Byrum Jones.
Survivors include his sisters Dorothy Whitley of Harrellsville, NC, and Bobbie Byrum of Woodland, NC. His brothers; Wilmar Jones of Conway, NC, Melvin Jones of Woodland, NC, Dale Jones of Conway, NC, Robert Jones and Thomas Jones both of Mary Hill, NC.
A Memorial service to celebrate the life of Henry Jones will be held Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, with Rev. Al Jarrell officiating.

VIOLET BAUGHAM
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mrs. Violet Lois Hale Baugham, age 93, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Sunday, October 16, 2011 at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, VA.
Mrs. Baugham was born December 10, 1917 in Petersburg, VA, the daughter of the late George Thomas "Tom" Hale and Gertrude Seal Hale. She was also predeceased by her husband Floyd Winford "Red" Baugham, a grandson, Steven Miles, her brothers George Louis Hale and Connie Brooks Hale, her sister Helen Hale Harrison, and two very special friends Dorothy Shaw and Roger Jenkins Sr.
Survivors include her daughter, Faye B. Spencer of Roanoke Rapids and her grandson, Jeff Miles of Raleigh, NC. A very faithful friend, Penny Love of Roanoke Rapids.
Graveside services will be held, Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. James Jenkins officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association or the charity of one’s choice.

CHARLES CALLAHAN
Halifax, NC - Mr. Charles Watson Callahan, age 70, of Halifax, NC, died Saturday, October 15, 2011 at his home.
Mr. Callahan was born April 19, 1941 in Richmond, VA the son of the late Charles Watson Callahan, Jr. and Gertrude Barfield Callahan.
He owned and operated a convenience store in Enfield for many years. He served his country in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Betty Jean Dunn Callahan. His sister-in-law, Kay Dunn Bryant and her husband Edward F. Bryant Sr. of Emporia, VA. His brother-in-law, William J. Dunn of Jacksonville, Florida. Also his beloved canine companion, "Gracie".
Private memorial services will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Mr. Marty Thomas Archer
Hampton, VA - Mr. Marty Thomas Archer, age 50 of Hampton, Va died October 15, 2011 at his home.
Marty was predeceased by his parents, James and Margaret Davis Archer.
He is survived by his sister Wanda Archer.
Graveside services were Thursday, October 20, 2011 at The Archer Family Cemetery, Jackson, NC.

MACK PETERSON
Roanoke Rapids, NC - Mack Wayne Peterson, age 57, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away October 11, 2011 at UNC Chapel Hill Medical Center. Mack was born August 24, 1954 in Northampton County North Carolina the son of the late Richard Ira Peterson and Susie Scott Peterson.
Survivors include his two sons Timothy "Timmy" Peterson and fiancé Laura Jennings of Eure, NC, and Jerry Peterson of Gaston, NC; His four brothers Isaac Peterson and wife Peggy of Gaston, NC; Linwood Peterson and fiancé Sue Boone of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Kenneth Bruce Peterson and wife Mary Alice of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Sidney Daniel and wife Ugie of Raleigh, NC.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mack Peterson will be held Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC, with Dr. Dennis W. Gregory, Sr. officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of Betty Brown 3346 Hwy 46 Gaston, NC 27832.

Jackson, NC - Mr. Robert "Bobsie" Eugene Drewette Sr., age 88, of Jackson, NC, died Tuesday, October 4, 2011 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.
Mr. Drewette was born September 30, 1923 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Robert Benjamin Drewette and Katie Lois Sears Drewette. He was a farmer, a US Army Veteran and a faithful member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Holloman Drewette. His children, Sandra D. Flythe and her husband William of Jackson, Dianne D. Creel and her husband Buddy of Conway, Robert "Bobby" Drewette Jr. and his wife Norma Jo, William Thomas "Billy" Drewette, and George Randolph "Randy" Drewett and his wife Jeneane, all of Jackson. His grandchildren, Lisa F. Durham, Danielle C. McGee, Kimberly C. Brittenham, Lou Anne Flythe, Mindy Jo Drewette, Lauren Drewette, Hannah Drewette, and Nicholas Drewette. Also his very special companion, "Blackie".
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with Rev. Craig Janney officiating. Burial will follow at Seaboard Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, Wednesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM and other times at the home.

Clarence "Two Ton" Elliott Joyner
Harrellsville, NC - Clarence "Two Ton" Elliott Joyner, age 85, of Harrellsville, NC, passed away October 2, 2011 at Brian Center Health & Rehab Center in Windsor, NC. Clarence was born July 26, 1926 in Rocky Mount, NC, the son of the late Clarence Edward Joyner and Thelma Forehand Joyner. He was also predeceased by his siblings Edward Hines Joyner, W.H. Joyner, Dolly Joyner Nelson and his wife Rosa Jones Joyner.
Survivors include his daughter; Judy Joyner of Durham, NC. His brother; Ernest Joyner and wife Virginia of Colerain, NC. His beloved pet Wrinkles. His special friends Coleman Taylor and Rachel Mabrey of Harrellsville, NC. Also several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of The Brian Center and Dr. Khoury for helping Mr. Joyner as his health declined.
Graveside memorial services to celebrate the life of Clarence Joyner will be held Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Harrellsville Cemetery with Rev. Hugh Mizelle officiating.

Mr. Eugene Ferrell "Pat" Edwards
Garysburg, NC - Mr. Eugene Ferrell "Pat" Edwards, age 81, of Garysburg, NC, died Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Guardian Care in Roanoke Rapids.
Mr. Edwards was born January 29, 1930 in Weldon, NC, the son of the late Louis W. Edwards and Estelle Stevenson Edwards.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roy R. Edwards and Louis W. Edwards Jr.
Mr. Edwards was a member of Weldon United Methodist Church and he retired from Champion Paper Company. He was a US Marine Corp veteran and served his country during the Korean War.
He is surved by his wife, Mildred Stephenson Edwards. His son, Dean Edwards and his wife Robin of Apex, NC. Three grandchildren, Patrick Edwards, Carole Edwards and Meredith Edwards. Also a sister-in-law, Alyce W. Edwards of Roanoke Rapids.
Graveside services will be held, Sunday, October 2, 2011 at 1:30 PM at the Stephenson Family Cemetery, Jackson By-Pass Road, Garysburg with Rev. Robert Hill officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Weldon United Methodist Church or to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends at the home.
