GERTRUDE OUTLAND

Jackson, NC - Gertrude Hughes Outland, age 85, passed away Thursday, September 29, 2011 at Lutheran Home in Hickory, NC, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Outland was born in Jackson, NC, on September 14, 1926, the daughter of the late Mabel and Philip Hughes, the youngest of six children.

During her lifetime, she was a telephone operator in Weldon, NC, a Naval veteran, and nurse at Halifax Memorial Hospital in Roanoke Rapids, NC. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Mahlon Hughes and two sisters, Joyce Witt and Janie True.

She is survived by a daughter, Susie Carlson and her husband Don of Wharton, Texas and their four children, Stacy and her husband Chris, Cathy and her husband Guy, David and Melanie; a son, Dr. Ken Boham and his wife Betty and their two children, Stephen and Chelsea, two sisters, Janet Lewis of Wheat Ridge, CO and Doris Cones of Suffolk, VA. Also five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services celebrating her life will be held Monday, October 3, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Hill officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 2, 2011 from 3:00 until 5:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

Memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute, 2855 Hickory Blvd., Hudson, NC 28638.

WILLIAM FUTRELL SR

Conway, NC - Mr. William Earl Futrell Sr., age 85, of Conway, NC, died September 22, 2011 at Rich Square Health Care Center.

Mr. Futrell was born August 22, 1926 in Northampton County, NC, the son of the late Adgie Futrell
and Ethel Mulder Futrell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marie Taylor Futrell and a brother, Augustus Futrell.

Mr. Futrell served his country in the Merchant Marines and the US Army. He was a member of Galatia Baptist Church. He retired from Talon Zipper Plant after 28 years of service and then worked at Georgia Pacific for 17 additional years. He also was a carpenter for a number of years.

Survivors include his daughter, Charlotte McKellar of Franklin, VA, his sons, Billy Futrell and his wife Beth and James Roby Futrell and his wife Donna, all of Conway. His grandson Trey Futrell. His sisters, Peggy F. Rook of Gaston, NC, and Virginia Morgan Hall of Roxobel, NC. His brother, Robert Futrell of Warner Robbins, Georgia and a sister-in-law, Ricksie Carroll of Seaboard, NC.

Graveside services will be held, Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Conway Cemetery in Conway, NC, with Rev. David Foster officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Friday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM and other times at the home of his son, Billy Futrell.

Memorial contributions may be made to Galatia Baptist Church, Senior Citizens Group.

SHERRY FICKENS

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Sherry Ann Rera Dickens, age 57, of Roanoke Rapids, died Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at her home after battling cancer for one year.

Sherry was born in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of the late John Paul Rera and Jaqueline Marie Rera. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Edward Dickens and a beloved son, Edward Henry (Hoss) Dickens.

She is survived by her children, Mary Yates and husband Mike and Carolyn Dickens, all of Roanoke Rapids, Nancy Carol Dickens of Danville, VA, Edward Dickens and his wife Linda, Barbara Byrum and her husband Lacy, all of Roanoke Rapids, Betty Rera and husband Johnny of Gaston, Joseph Dickens Jr., Paul Dickens and wife Roxanne of Roanoke Rapids, Sherry Avila and husband Jose of Fredericksburg, VA, Diane Medina and husband Miguel and Eddie Jr. Dickens, all of Roanoke Rapids. Her sisters, Tammy Morgan of Long Island, NY, Loretta Crawford of California and Rosa Morales of Hopewell, VA. Her brother, Robert Paul Rera of Ocala, Florida. Her brother-in-law, William Dickens and his wife Margaret of Roanoke Rapids. Twenty grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held, Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at 10:00 AM at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Father Pius Wekesa officiating.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home, Monday from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM.

The family would like to thank Community Home Health and Hospice and a very special thanks to Massey Funeral Home and their staff for helping the Dickens family when no one else would.

AVIS KING

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Avis Odom King, age 95, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away September 18, 2011 at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Avis was born March 26, 1916 in Warren County, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Ira Dillard Odom and Ruth Lambert Odom. She was also preceded in death by her husband Jack Dowtin King.

Survivors include her son; Steve W. King and wife Hazel of Roanoke Rapids, NC; three grandchildren Mark King and wife Stacey of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Tim King and wife Tesha of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Joe King and his friend Stacey Beltram of Roanoke Rapids, NC; four great-grandchildren Boray King, Kristen King, Jacob King all of Roanoke Rapids and Paul King of Scotland Neck, NC.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Arcola, NC at 11:00 AM with Rev. Dennis Joyner officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC from 6:00 until 7:00 PM.

ALBERT SAMUEL LASSITER

Woodland, NC - Albert Samuel "Sam" Lassiter, 87, a native of Woodland, died Friday, September 16, 2011 at Mayview Rehab and Nursing Center in Raleigh. Sam was born on September 25, 1923, the son of the late John H. and Reatha Vick Lassiter and was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy L. James and two brothers, Cola E. and John H. Lassiter, Jr.

He is survived by his sister, Bruce Gwendolyn Barnes and brother-in-law, Edwin T. Barnes of Raleigh, sister-in-law, Mary Ann R. Lassiter of Burlington, and a special cousin, Tyrone Hardison of Mann's Harbor. He is remembered fondly by his nieces and nephews, Gwen B. Abernethy, Malene B. Goforth both of Charlotte, Tim Barnes of Alpharetta, GA, Cathy B. McKane of Garner, Art Barnes of Raleigh, Rose Lynn James Francis of Chattanooga, TN, Sue James Barnes of Charlotte and Frances L. Harvey of Elon College.

Sam retired with the United States Postal Service after 38 years of service as a rural mail carrier and was very civic-minded serving his community as a volunteer fireman for 27 years and as a volunteer with the Woodland Rescue Squad for 34 years. Sam served his Country as a soldier in the Army and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal after stepping on a land mine in Germany.

He lived his life as a Christian and was a devoted member of Woodland Baptist Church, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir and was elected deacon for several terms. His family lovingly remembers him for the sweetest prayers he offered up at each meal.

A special thanks is given to Dr. John Stanley of Woodland, Dr. David Clark and Dr. James Parsons of Raleigh, the staff at Pine Forest Rest Home in Potecasi, NC, Lona Story of Murfreesboro and Tim Duncan of Raleigh for their loving care of Sam as his health declined.

Funeral services are to be held Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Woodland Baptist Church. The family will receive friends of Sam at the church from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Woodland Baptist Church, PO Box 444, Woodland, NC 27897.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

JIMMY MATTHEWS IV

Midlothian, VA - James Lewis "Jimmy" Matthews IV, age 32, of Midlothian, VA, died Thursday, September 15, 2011 at his home.

Jimmy was born January 24, 1979 in Richmond, VA. He was a chef. He was preceded in death by his mother, Judith Gollinger Matthews, his grandparents, James Lewis Matthews II, Barney and Dottie Gollinger.

He is survived by his daughter, Zoe Lillian Matthews. His father, James Lewis Matthews III and his wife Dolly of Roanoke Rapids. His sisters, Jennifer Matthews Casper of Richardsonville, Texas and Amberly Matthews O"Neal of Roanoke Rapids. His grandmother, Joline Ray Matthews of Roanoke Rapids. His aunts, Melody M. Beaver of Roanoke Rapids, Joy M. Lopez of Athens, Ohio and Joann M. Brown of West Minister, Maryland.

Funeral services will be held, Monday September 19, 2011 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.

ALBERT CRICKMORE Mr. Albert Gray "Jack" Crickmore, age 86, of Halifax, NC, died Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC.

Mr. Crickmore was born July 30, 1925 in Nah County, NC, the son of the late Percy Crickmore and Kathleen Denton Crickmore. He was also pre-ceded in death by his first wife, Annie Hux Crickmore and his second wife Deborah S. Crickmore, his Brother George Crickmore and his sisters, Vivian Crickmore and Edna C. Farmer.

He was one of the original members and past Commander of the Enfield Rescue Squad. He drove for Nooney Bus Lines for many years and was retired from the NCDOT.

Survivors include his son, Albert Carlson "Pete" Crickmore and his wife Sharon of Wendell, NC. His daughter, Sheila Diane Crickmore Hollis of Roanoke Rapids. His brother Donald Crickmore of Enfield, NC. His sisters, Mary Dean Williams of Alabama, Dorothy Griffin of Maryland and Sylvia Brazwell of Castalia, NC. His grandchildren, Larry Crickmore and his wife Kelly, Robin C Pearson and husband Steve, Tammy C. Johnson, Michael Crickmore and his wife Samatha Jean and Kala Crickmore. Seventeen great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 12, 1011 at
1:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, NC. Burial will follow at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids Sunday from 3:00 until 5:00 PM and other times at 825 Hamilton Street, Roanoke Rapids.

Jenus Greene Long, Jr.

RALEIGH - Jenus Greene Long, Jr. died Monday, September 5, 2011 at the age of 91.

He was born near Seaboard, on July 1, 1920, the first of four children of Jenus Greene Long and Annie Laura Gay Long. He grew up on his father’s farm.

J.G. went to NC State in 1937 for a year and later to Chowan College. He graduated from High Point College in 1944. He earned a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Theological Seminary in 1947.

His seminary shared a campus with Western Maryland College, where he met Vernelle Cullen Ports. They married on Sept. 27, 1946. They had a son, Paul Victor, in 1948, and a daughter, Patricia Vernelle, in 1951.

J.G. belonged to the Virginia Methodist Conference, where in nearly 39 years of ministry he served pastorates in Monterey, Cape Charles, Thaxton, Pleasant Valley, Forestville, Onancock, Virginia Beach, Petersburg, Culpeper, Staunton, Arlington, and Stuart.

J.G.’s hobbies were hunting, gardening, travel, and the stock market. He took his family on camping trips to more than 30 states, including trips to Florida, Nova Scotia and the Seattle World’s Fair.

J.G. is survived by his wife, Vernelle, of Raleigh; his two children: Patricia Long, of Raleigh, and Victor Long, from California; and by his three siblings, Joseph Long, Inez Bryner and Virginia Goddard, all of Seaboard

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 8, at the church where J.G. grew up, Concord United Methodist Church in Pleasant Hill. Burial will follow at Seaboard Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 200 Hospice Circle, Raleigh NC 27607. They took wonderful care of J.G. in his final days

Jennilee Ann Foster

Roanoke Rapids, NC - Jennilee Ann Foster, age 26, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, died Monday, September 5, 2011 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC. Jennilee was born February 23, 1985 in Cortland, New York. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Bill Foster.

Survivors include her daughter, Nevaeh Foster, her parents, Jennifer Pittman and her step-father Vern Leubner and her father Randy Foster and her step-mother Judith Foster. Two sisters, Jessica Foster Burnett and her husband Joe and Robin Comstock. Four brothers Jason Foster, Joshua Foster, Brian Pealo and Geoffrey Stillwell. Her maternal grandparents, Mahlon and Mary Pittman. Her paternal grandmother, Barbara Foster. Also several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held, Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 7:00 PM at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.
Burial will take place later in Cortland, New York.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home immediately following the service on Thursday night.

Mr. Raymond Thomas Doughtie

Winton, NC - Mr. Raymond Thomas Doughtie, age 85, passed away Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie, NC.

Mr. Doughtie was born July 23, 1926 in Hertford County, NC, the son of the late Cola William Doughtie and Willie Leggett Doughtie. He was also predeceased by his brothers, Cola Wright Doughtie and Ray Doughtie and a grandson, Cody Downs.

Mr. Doughtie retired from Golden Peanut Company after 32 years of service. Upon his retirement he own and operated Pleasant Grove Garden Nursery for several years. He was an active member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon prior to helping start a new church, Maranatha Baptist Church. He made several trips to Chile where he help start a new church there. He was a former member of the Aulander Fire Department, a former scout master for the local Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Doughtie was a World War II Army Veteran and active in the local VFW for many years and he was a Gideon.

Survivors include his wife Troley D. Doughtie. His children, Teresa D. Herring and her husband Dan of Rocky Mount, NC, Thomas Doughtie and his wife Carolyn of Franklin, VA and Diane D. Blythe and her husband Blake of Winton, NC. His grandchildren, Wood Downs, Allison H. Elliott, Trey Herring and Suzanne Drake. Two great-grandchildren, Logan Elliott and Kyle Thomas Drake. His brother, Howard Doughtie of Windsor, NC and a sister, Barbara Ann White of Askewville, NC.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 11:00 AM at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC with Rev. J.N. Baggett officiating. Burial will follow at Aulander Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Tuesday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.
Memorial contributions may be made to Maranatha Baptist Church or to the Aulander Fire Department.
