SANFORD - Funeral services for William Joseph "Babe" McIver, 86, of 339 Temple Ave., who died Saturday (10/11/03), were held at Monday by the Rev. Gerome Williams.
Justice Griffin was the musician and sang a solo.

MAYO, Fla. - Charlie Printess Maddox, 91, of 1050 Northwest County Road 250, formerly of Sanford, died Saturday (10/18/03) at home.

JACK THOMAS
BURLINGTON - Jack Maxton Thomas, 70, of 2821 Charlotte Lane, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
He was born in Chatham County to the late Norris Maxton Thomas and the late Leetie Cox Thomas. He was the devoted husband to Kathy Siler Thomas for 40 years, who survives. He was a loving and adored father and grandfather.
Mr. Thomas graduated from N.C. State University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He was a member of Front Street United Methodist Church, a U.S. Air Force veteran and an avid sports fisherman. He retired from Lucent Technologies (AT&T) with 34 years in engineering management.
Besides his wife, survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Helen T. and Newell E. Rollins of Durham; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian M. and Joanne R. Thomas of Graham; daughter and son-in-law, Amy T. and Ronald D. Wade Jr. of Gibsonville; and grandchildren, Kristina K. Thomas and Carlton "Hunter" Wade.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Front Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Sidney Huggins. The family received friends Monday at Lowe Funeral Home and Crematory and will receive them at other times at the home.

HAZEL UNDERWOOD
SANFORD - Hazel Cole Underwood, 73, of 714 Westover Drive, died Sunday (1/4/04) at Central Carolina Hospital.
A native of Randolph County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur Ray Cole and Pauline Cox Cole. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie John Underwood Sr.; brothers, Foister, Truman, and Winfred Cole; and a sister, Clelia A. Cole.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. John Holder and the Rev. Ray Cole. Burial will be in Lee Memory Gardens.
She is survived by a son, Willie Underwood Jr. and wife Debbie of Sanford; a daughter, Shelia Miller and husband Dennis of Angier; sisters, Celia Cole Perkinson and Neolia Cole Womack, both of Sanford; and four grandchildren.
LUCILLE HUNT
SANFORD - Lucille Seymore Hunt, 93, of Sanford, died Monday (1/5/04) at Parkview Retirement Home.
She was a homemaker and worked many years as a volunteer at the hospital for the Red Cross. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Beach Parsons and Lynn Hunt, brothers, Basil and Paul Byron Seymore, and a sister, Christine Stone.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Buffalo Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Tom Marshall. Burial will be in Buffalo Cemetery.
She is survived by brothers, David Seymore and wife Ann of Sanford, William Seymore and wife Lune of Georgia, and Malcolm Seymore and wife Arlene of Winston-Salem.
The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church following the services.

LILLINGTON - Steven Melnyk Jr., 77, of 40 Melnyk Lane, died Sunday (1/4/03) at home.
A native of Detroit, he was a son of Steven Melnyk Sr. and Bessie Pavlovich Melnyk. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at the Melnyk family cemetery by the Rev. Roy McLamb.
He is survived by his wife, Marie F. Melnyk; daughters, Nancy Morrison and husband James and Robin Yow and husband Robert, all of Lillington, Rose Howery and husband Duane of Cameron, Theresa Holland and husband David of Sanford, Bell Stathakis and husband Matthew of Warren-Robbins, Ga., Jan Dandron and husband Mike of Lemon Springs, and Stephanie Melnyk-Ward and husband William of Ohio; sons, Joe E. Petrone and wife Angie and Frank G. Petrone, all of Lillington; a sister, Tina Melnyk of Florida; brothers, Robert and Art Melnyk, both of California; 23 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Soloist was Dorothy McLamb.
Pallbearers were Joseph Petrone, Frank Petrone, Duane Howery, James Morrison, Robert Yow, Matthew Stathakis and David Holland.

SILER CITY - Dorothy Poe Langley Hayes, 85, of 900 W. Dolphin St., died Sunday (1/5/04) at Sun Bridge Care Facilities.
A native of Chatham County, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the Siler City Pentecostal Victory Temple. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph T. Hayes.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at Piney Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Odell McBride. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She is survived by daughters, Betty Jean Bowman and husband Richard of Graham, Ruby L. Rhew and husband Ronald of South Boston, Va., Mary Merritt Rogers and husband Ronald of Burlington, Linda Langley DeRosier and husband Pete of Snow Camp, and Carolyn Langley Faircloth and husband Russell of Burlington; sons, John Hubert Poe of Siler City, Roy Langley and Robert Langley and wife Madge, all of Liberty; a brother, Billy Poe of Siler City; a sister, Polly Dowd Duncan of Siler City; 21 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 20 stepchildren.

SILER CITY - Claude Morris Matthews, 59, of 77 Headen Road, died Friday (1/2/04) at home.
A native of Chatham County, he was retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation. He was a member of the Light of the World Lodge 711 in Siler City.
Funeral service was held Tuesday at Jordan Grove AME Zion Church.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Matthews; stepson, George Troxler of Greensboro; mother, Vernell B. Matthews of Siler City; brothers, Curtis and Grover Matthews, both of Siler City, and Elbert Matthews of Greensboro; a sister, Lola Matthews of Siler City; and 11 half brothers and sisters.

SANFORD - Miracle Dishawn TiLeak Hodges, child of Brandi White and Rodney Peaco Hodges, both of Sanford, died Monday (1/5/04).
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Lee Memory Gardens. Words of comfort will be given by William and Barbara Powell.
Also surviving are a brother, Jayden Hodges of Sanford; maternal grandparents, Josephine McLean and Ronnie McCain, of Sanford; paternal grandparents, Allene Hodges of Sanford and Rodney Lee Hodges of Lillington; five aunts and two uncles.

SILER CITY - Eula Mae McClain, 78, of 7299 Margaret Chapel Road, died Sunday (1/4/04) at Randolph Hospital.
A native of Randolph County, she was a member of Olivers Chapel AME Zion Church. She was president of the deaconess board and was a class leader. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy McClain; a son, Ronald N. McClain; sisters, Helen Matthews and Desiree Brown; and brothers, Willard Matthews and James W. Matthews.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Olivers Chapel AME Zion Church by the Rev. Gaylyn Wilson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are sons, Bobby Lee McClain and wife Sondra of Jacksonville, N.C., and Steven Ray McClain and wife Nera of Ramseur; a stepson, L.J. Garner and wife Alice of Staley; sisters, Delsie Hilton and Annie Ruth Matthews, both of Winston-Salem, Shelia Guin of Asheboro, Ocie M. Brown of Staley and Linda Grove of Reidsville; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and an aunt.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Olivers Chapel Church.

GERALD DONAHUE
SOUTHERN PINES - Gerald T. Donahue, 87, of Southern Pines, died Sunday (1/4/04) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
Born Sept. 11, 1916, in Bridgeport, Conn., he was a son of the late Patrick J. and Mary Fitzgerald Donahue. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. He attended Fordham University and Columbia University. His family moved to Carolina Trace in 1985 and were members of St. Stephen Catholic Church. In 1999 they moved to Belle Meade in Southern Pines. He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence J. Donahue, and a daughter, Patricia M. Donahue.
Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Belle Meade Chapel by Father John Forbes. Burial will follow in the Long Island National Cemetery, Long Island, N.Y.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Rose Cusack Donahue; a son, Donald F. Donahue and wife Jeanmarie of New York City; and a granddaughter.
