MAMERS - Frances Mangum Brown, 75, of Mamers, died Wednesday (4/9/03) at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Duncan Brown.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Holly Springs Baptist Church, Broadway, by the Rev. Jerry Parsons. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Pam McLeod and husband Danny of Broadway; a son, Roger Brown and wife Ann of Sanford; sisters, Grace Dove and Catherine Champion, both of Knightdale; and four grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home.

MARY RUMBOLD
SANFORD - Mary Gunn Rumbold, 82, of Sanford, died Wednesday (4/9/03) at the Presbyterian Home of High Point.
Graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at Buffalo Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Carl Rush and the Rev. Rick Martindale.
She was a graduate of Queen's College of Charlotte. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sanford and the Suzanne Reeves Literary Club.
Mrs. Rumbold was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Gunn James, and a son, James Marshall Rumbold Jr.
Mrs. Rumbold is survived by her husband, James Marshall Rumbold Sr., at home; a son, John Thomas Rumbold and wife Lucy of Wilmington and their children, John Steve, Tinker and Krystal; a son, Richard Gunn Rumbold and wife Laurie of Kernersville, and their son, Taylor; grandchildren, James Rumbold III of Sanford, Elizabeth Rumbold Cole of Elizabethtown, and William Rumbold of Wallace; three great-grandchildren, Jordan, Alyssa and Matthew, all of Sanford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church building fund, Sanford, N.C. 27330, or to the Presbyterian Home of High Point.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Services for Verta R. Atkins Haynes will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Zion Canaan Baptist Church in Columbia with burial in Memorial Gardens in Columbia.
Ms. Haynes will be placed in the church at noon on Friday. Wake services will be held at 7 p.m. today at Leevy's Funeral Home, 1831 Taylor St., Columbia, S.C.
Born in Sanford, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Gracie Atkins.
Surviving are her husband, Samuel L. Haynes, sons, Rodney, Roderick and Jovan Haynes, all of Columbia; brothers, Jimmy Atkins of Sanford and Leonard Atkins of Durham, N.C.; sisters, Evangelist Rebecca Riddick of Sanford and Mary Peaks of Forest Park, Ga.; and three grandsons, Keesha Booker, Roderick Haynes Jr. and De'Prince Haynes, all of Columbia.

EARL RIVES STOUT JR.
SANFORD - Earl "Shorty" Rives Stout Jr., 75, of 2719 Kendale Drive, died Monday (6/9/03) at home.
Born in Chatham County, he was a son of the late Earl Rives Stout and Irene Caudle Stout. He was a former employee of General Creosote.
Funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at San-Lee Chapel, 3215 Kellers Andrews Road, by the Rev. Michael Boyette and the Rev. John Sauls. Burial will follow in Meroney United Methodist Church cemetery in Bear Creek.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille Hazel Everette Stout; daughters, Teresa Stout Dwiggins and husband David of Apex, Julie Stout Dunn and husband Richard of Sanford, and Harriet Stout Bright and husband Randy of Pittsboro; stepdaughters, Rebecca Knight of Sanford and Teresa Brantley of Cameron; and 12 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at San-Lee Chapel.

FLORENCE YARBOROUGH
SANFORD - Florence Lanier Yarborough, 93, of Sanford, died Sunday (6/8/03) at Central Carolina Hospital.
Born in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late William David and JoAnna Thomas Lanier. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Cross Yarborough; a son, Larry Cross Yarborough; and a daughter, Mary Frances Yarborough Bohler. She was a lifetime member of Memphis United Methodist Church, where she was the oldest member. She worked at Sanford Furniture for many years and also at Cornell Dubilier, from which she retired.
Funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memphis United Methodist Church by the Rev. Thomas Simpson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, JoAnn Yarborough Thomas and husband Jesse B. of Sanford; sons, Bobby Ray Yarborough and wife Darrell, and James Franklin Yarborough, all of Sanford; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Yarborough's body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the funeral.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home and at other times at the Whitaker residence, 51 Bradford Pear Lane, Sanford.

SANFORD - Ramona "Mo" Diane Tudor, 63, of Sanford, died Saturday (6/7/03) at home.
Formerly of Batavia, Ill., she was a member of the Oregon (Ill.) United Methodist Church. She worked for Bank One in Batavia and volunteered with Hospital Humane Society and booster organizations in Batavia and Dixon, Ill.
Memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Boles Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Danny Redman.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Dave Tudor, at home; sons, Mark Allen Tudor of Plymouth, Minn., Curt David Tudor and wife Jane Ellen of Chapel Hill, and Scott Benjamin Tudor and wife Jennifer of Victoria, Minn.; brother, Charles Adams of Spooner, Wis.; sister, Sharon Marshall of Cynthiana, Ky.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

SAM B. SEAWELL
CARTHAGE - Sam B. Seawell, 75, of 1689 Putnam-Glendon Road, died Monday (6/9/03) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
A native of Moore County, he was a son of the late Loy M. and Maitia Fox Seawell. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a retired poultry salesman.
Funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cool Springs United Methodist Church by the Rev. Clarence Garner and the Rev. Jefferson Davis. Burial with military honors will follow at the church cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Alma Foster Seawell; daughter, Marsha Brown and husband Jerry of Carthage; son, Roger W. Seawell and wife Anita of Siler City; sister, Sally S. Willett and husband Donald of Bear Creek; brother, George Seawell and wife Hazel of Danville, Va.; and a granddaughter.

DRUSILLA BYRD HOWARD
SANFORD - Drusilla Byrd Howard, 92, of 272 Big Springs Road, died Saturday (6/7/03) at Pinelake Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.
A native of Harnett County, she was a daughter of the late John William Byrd and Viola Elizabeth Baker Byrd. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lee Howard.
Funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Grace Chapel by the Rev. Rudy Holland and the Rev. Bob Yandle. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
Surviving are sons, Louis Byrd Howard and Vernon Howard, both of Sanford; daughters, Jane Shaw of Bladenboro, Betty Shaw and Nancy Neal, both of Sanford, and Ann Pleasants of Apex; 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

SANFORD - Laura Beatrice McIver, 60, of 1501 Pinehurst St., died Saturday (6/7/03) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
Traditional service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Star of Hope Freewill Baptist Church by the Rev. Allen Smith and the Rev. Derrell Harris. Entombment will follow in Lee Memory Gardens.
Surviving are her husband, Elder George Clinton McIver of Sanford; son, George Marcus McIver and wife Tracie of Greensboro; daughter, Laura Annette McDougal of Raleigh; sister, Esther Singletary of Maryland; brother, Charles Brooks of Maryland; and four grandchildren.

JOHN S. AVENT
SOUTHERN PINES - Former Lee County resident John S. Avent, 89, died Saturday at home.
Born in Lee County to the late Elton E. and Virginia Sheppard Avent on Oct. 8, 1913, he received his education from the county schools and from N.C. State University, from which he graduated in 1941. He was a registered and licensed professional engineer and worked with R.J. Reynolds Co. for 30 years until his retirement as chief of machine design in 1976. In military service, he achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel and crossed Europe with Gen. George Patton during World War II as commander of the 748th Tank Battalion, Third Army.
He was a 100 percent organ donor to the Eastern N.C. Medical Center in Greenville.
Memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at O'Quinn-Peebles Chapel in Lillington by the Rev. Lawrence W. Avent.
Surviving are his wife, Melba S. Avent of Southern Pines; son, Neil McLean Avent of Sanford; brother, Rev. Lawrence W. Avent of Greensboro; daughter-in-law, Lupita Avent of Aberdeen; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends immediately following today's service.
