SANFORD - Gerald Edwin Carrington, 50, of 3412 Longview Drive, died Monday (8/16/04) at Central Carolina Hospital.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Works for Christ Bible Ministry by Minister Alice Hooker. Burial will follow in Lee Memory Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Sheralyn Carrington; a daughter, Cherisse Ann Carrington of Sanford; sons, Shawn Anthony Carrington and wife Andrea of Clarksville, Tenn., and Brian David Carrington of Cameron; his mother, Nellie Singleton of Philadelphia; and a brother, Jeffrey Sykes of Philadelphia.
The family will receive friends at the residence. The body may be viewed beginning at 10 a.m. at the church.

SANFORD - Clara Evelyn Bethea, of 417 Waddell St., died Sunday (8/15/04) at her residence.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Prevailing Life Ministries by the Rev. Herman Morris. Burial will follow in Minter Cemetery.
Surviving are daughters, Carolyn Bethea and Patty Bethea, both of Sanford; sons, Patrick Bethea and Tyrone Bethea, both of Sanford; sisters, Carolyn Cagle, Annie Griffin and Patricia McQueen, all of Sanford; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

BEAR CREEK - Nellie Jane Marsh, 68, of Bear Creek, died Tuesday (8/17/04) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

SANFORD - Billy Thurn "Gator" Gladden Jr., 53, of 2982 Pickard Road, died Sunday (8/15/04) at Duke University Hospital.
A native of Lee County, he served in the N.C. National Guard. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Simpson Gladden Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Roger Thomas and the Rev. Garland Foushee. Burial will be in Ephesus Baptist Church cemetery.
He is survived by sons, William Tadd Gladden and wife Melinda of West Columbia, S.C., and Timothy Chase and wife Susan of Archers Lodge; daughters, Nicole Lear and husband Richard of West Columbia, S.C., and Kim Barnett and husband Jeff of Knightdale; father and stepmother, Billy Thurn Gladden and Marie Gladden of Sanford; a sister, Judy Ann Gladden of Sanford; brothers, Tony Hayden Gladden and Nathaniel Hope Gladden of Sanford; a stepsister, Rose Fenton and husband Ron of Sanford; a stepbrother, Wayne Phillips of Sanford; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

ANGIER - Gladys Bennett Drake, 92, of Angier, died Tuesday (8/17/04) at Good Hope Hospital in Erwin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Drake.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at O'Quinn-Peebles Chapel by the Rev. Robert West and the Rev. Timmy Blair. Burial will be in Harnett Memorial Park.
She is survived by a son, Nelson Edward Bennett and wife Betty of Fuquay-Varina; a daughter, Carolyn Marie Drake Smith and husband Mike of Lillington; sisters, Peggy Jarrell of Lillington and Magleen Wood of Dunn; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home and other times at the home of Nelson and Betty Bennett.
RICHARD DIPPOLITO
SANFORD - Richard Joseph Dippolito, 64, of 30 Birdies Roost, died Tuesday (8/17/04) at his residence.
Born in Cortland County, N.Y., he was a son of the late Joseph Anthony and Florence Henry Dippolito. He was a parts manager for an auto dealer.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen the First Martyr Catholic Church by Father John Forbes.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Berry Dippolito; a son, Michael Dippolito of Corland, N.Y.; a daughter, Suzan Scales of Raleigh; a brother, Gary Dippolito of Sanford; a sister, Carol Sonnacchio of Cortland; and a grandchild.
The family will receive friends following the service at the home of Gary Dippolito, 593 Carolina Way, Carolina Lakes.

LILLINGTON - Elizabeth Womble Butler, 82, of Lillington, died Tuesday (8/17/04).
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Strickland, and her second husband, Royce Butler.
Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Spring Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kevin Miller. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a son, Terry Strickland and wife Cindy of Sanford, and two grandsons.

RICHARD OWEN
WHISPERING PINES - Richard David Owen, 85, of Whispering Pines, died Tuesday (8/17/04) at his residence.
Born Oct. 24, 1918, in Sharon, Pa., he was a son of the late Dr. Edward James and Frances Collister Owen.
He worked for Ideal Foundry, a subsidiary of Republic Steel Corp. in Warren, Ohio, and served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to Ideal Foundry, where he became plant manager.
He was also employed by Shenango Inc., a foundry on Neville Island, Pittsburgh, serving as vice president of sales until his retirement in 1982.
Following his retirement, he moved to Whispering Pines. He was an avid golfer.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carthage United Methodist Church by the Rev. Chuck Plowman. Graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Oakwood Cemetery, Sharon, Pa., by the Rev. Catherine B. Bickerton.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred Becky Beckwith Owen; a daughter, Judith Owen Norton and husband Ronald of Alexandria, Va.; a son, Edward James Owen and wife Diane of Gibsonia, Pa.; two grandchildren, two nieces, a great-niece and four great-nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home, Carthage.
