ORION COPELAND
WEST END - First Sgt. Orion Copeland, U.S. Army Ret., 85, of 285 Partridge Lane, died Tuesday (6/3/03) at home.
A native of Moore County, he was a son of the late James Elisha B. and Rosa McKenzie Copeland. From the age of 6, he grew up in the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh. He entered the U.S. Army's 6th Field Artillery at Ft. Bragg in 1940, served in the Philippine Campaign, two tours of duty in Germany, two tours of duty in Korea and a tour of duty in Vietnam prior to retiring with 31 1/2 years of service. He was awarded many medals and citations during his service.
A full military service, with honors, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Doub's Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Eric Joyce. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
He is survived by a son, James Henri Copeland and wife Sharon of West Chester, Pa.; a sister, Alpha Copeland of Pinehurst; two nieces; and a sister-in-law with whom he lived, Elgene Copeland.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage.
ELIZABETH GRIFFIN
PITTSBORO - Elizabeth Poplin Griffin, 88, of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday (6/4/03) at Salemtowne.
She was the widow of the late Dr. George J. Griffin.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ cemetery by Dr. Carlton Mitchell.
Memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday (6/10/03) in the Chapel of Salemtowne in Winston-Salem.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Griffin Funeral Service.
MARY SCOLETTI
CANONSBURG, Pa. - Mary Scoletti, formerly of Sanford, died Wednesday (6/4/03) in Canonsburg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Scoletti.
A memorial service will be held Sunday in Upper St. Clair, Pa.
She is survived by a daughter, Donna M. Gritzan of Bridgeville, Pa.

LEROY MCCRIMMON
VASS - Leroy McCrimmon, 64, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., formerly of Vass, died Sunday (6/1/03) at Aventura Hospital in North Miami.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Frye's Chapel Freewill Baptist Church by Elder Kent L. McMillian. Burial will follow in Frye Cemetery in Vass.
He is survived by his wife, Francine I. McCrimmon, at home; daughters, Yvonne J. McCrimmon, Sharon E. McCrimmon and Taneshia N. McCrimmon, all of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; a stepson, Vincent Ingram of Atlanta; sisters, Helen Harden of Spring Lake, and Minnie L. Buford of Laurelton, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Knotts Funeral Home and other times at the home of James and Helen Harden in Spring Lake.

SANFORD - Beth Clair Steckmesser Ahrndt, 49, of 2393 Hickory House Road, died Sunday (6/1/03) at home.
A native of Manitowoc County, Wis., she was a secretary at Central Carolina Community College. She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Ralph Steckmesser.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Woodrow Thomas and Kay Stoffel.
She is survived by her husband, Jeffrey J. Ahrndt; a son, Jonathan Ahrndt and daughter, Sondra Ahrndt, both at home; mother, Shirley Steckmesser of Manitowoc, Wis.; and a brother, Brad Steckmesser of Two Rivers, Wis.

SALISBURY - George Andrew Bayer, 66, of VA Medical Center, father of William H. Bayer of Sanford, died Wednesday (6/4/03).
He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, retiring as a staff sergeant. He also worked and retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edith Egan Bayer and Andrew T. Bayer.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the U.S. National Cemetery in Salisbury.
Also surviving are another son, and a brother.

HARVEY UNDERWOOD
Ft. WAYNE, Ind. - Harvey Vance Underwood, 67, of North Manchester, Ind., died Wednesday (5/28/03) at Lutheran Hospital.
A native of Harnett County, he was a son of Harvey Vance Underwood Sr. and Myrtle Waddell Underwood.
He was a member of the North Manchester United Methodist Church. After graduating from Benhaven High School in Harnett County, he earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana State University and later a master's degree from the University of Georgia.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Eikenberry; four sons, three brothers, and two sisters.

BURTON LAMBERT
GOLDSTON - Funeral services for Burton "George" Alphonso Lambert, 66, of Goldston, who died Sunday (6/1/03), were held Thursday at St. Luke United Church of Christ by Pastor Drury Underwood. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Elaine Lambert sang a solo. Sharetta Carpenter did a praise dance.
Floral bearers and pallbearers were friends of the family.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Vickie Farrow, formerly of Sanford, died Monday (6/2/03) in Brooklyn.
She was a daughter of the late Elise and Charlie Farrow.
Funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Fair Haven Funeral Chapel, 1040 Fulton St., Brooklyn, N.Y. 11238-2507.
Surviving locally is a brother, Larry Farrow and wife Stella of Sanford.

SANFORD - Funeral for Sonya Yvette Baker, 24, of 810 W. Rose St., who died Sunday (6/1/03), was held Thursday at First Calvary Baptist Church, by the Rev. Gerome Williams. Old Testament reading was given by the Rev. Freeman Brooks. New Testament reading was given by Eldress Cynthia Williams. Prayer of comfort was given by Eldress Williams. Burial followed in the Mt. Pisgah Lee Church cemetery.
Soloists were Priscilla Thompson and Tawana Boykins. Acknowledgments were given by Brenda Johnson. The Mt. Pisgah Lee Freewill Baptist Church choir sang. Musicians were Freddie Berryman and J.B. Murchison.
Floralbearers were members of the class of 1997 and friends.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Taylor, Banks Marsh, Larry Thompson, Gerome Williams Jr., Robert Williams, Robert Piggie, Lamont Williams and Richard Thompson.
