O.B. STOKES
SANFORD - Oscar Barker "O.B." Stokes, 75, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at Parkview in Sanford.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004 at St. Luke U.M.C., with Dr. Carl Frazier officiating. Burial will follow at Buffalo Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 at Miller-Boles Funeral Home.
O.B. was born in Durham in 1928. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1947 during the Second World War and in the 82nd Airborne from 1948-1952 during the Korean War.
Upon completing his studies of municipal administration at the UNC Institute of Government and serving our country, O.B. became a police officer for the City of Lexington from 1952-1957, at which time he became a tax collector and assistant manager, serving in that capacity from 1957-1961. He became the town of Valdese's second manager, serving from 1961-1967.
In 1967, he became the first city manager of Roanoke Rapids and worked for that city until 1972.
From 1972 until 1987, he served as Sanford's city manager. It was during this time when our city benefited greatly from his loyal leadership. He was responsible for the construction of the new City Hall, a new water and sewer plant, a new public works service center, a new fire station and street water and sewer line construction.
He was involved in many civic and community organizations such as the N.C. City and County Managers Association, lifetime member and president in 1986; Sanford Elks Lodge; Sanford Exchange Club; North Carolina Veterans Council from 1991-present; The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Sanford Post, as past commander; North Carolina Film Council from 1990-present; and was a past member of the Sanford Rotary Club and the Sanford Moose Lodge. O.B. also served as an usher at St. Luke and was a past member of their administrative board.
He married the former Lois Ann Marley of Lexington and shared 47 years of marriage.
He is survived by Lois Ann as well as two daughters, Sharon Stokes Spence and husband, Terry, of Sanford, and Anne Stokes Knuth and husband, Scott, also of Sanford; one brother, Spurgeon Stokes, of West Hartford, Conn.; two sisters, Mary Palmer Thompson of Las Vegas, Nev., and Polly Klingbeil of Ocala, Fla.; four grandchildren: Brittany, Marley and Jordan Spence and Maggie Knuth.
Donations may be made to the North Carolina City and County Managers Association (NCCMA), P.O. Box 3069, Raleigh, N.C. 27602-3069.
A scholarship fund will be established in memory of O.B. Stokes to provide leadership education opportunities for local government managers.
Miller-Boles Funeral Home is serving the family.

BILLY GLADDEN JR.
SANFORD - Billy Thurn "Gator" Gladden Jr., 53, of 2982 Pickard Road, died Sunday (8/15/04) at Duke University Hospital.
A native of Lee County, he served in the N.C. National Guard. He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Simpson Gladden Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Roger Thomas and the Rev. Garland Foushee. Burial will be in Ephesus Baptist Church cemetery.
He is survived by sons, William Tadd Gladden and wife Melinda of West Columbia, S.C., and Timothy Chase and wife Susan of Archers Lodge; daughters, Nicole Lear and husband Richard of West Columbia, S.C., and Kim Barnett and husband Jeff of Knightdale; a sister, Judy Ann Gladden of Sanford; brothers, Tony Hayden Gladden and Nathaniel Hope Gladden of Sanford; a stepsister, Rose Fenton and husband Ron of Sanford; a stepbrother, Wayne Phillips of Sanford; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Billy and Marie Gladden, 1807 Thurn Drive
Memorial gifts may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 550, Charlotte, N.C. 28210.

DONALD REYNOLDS
CARTHAGE - Donald Gray Reynolds, 55, of 1447 Ring Road, died Monday (8/16/04) at home.
A native of Moore County, he was a son of the late Arthur Junior Reynolds and Margie Marion Reynolds. He was preceded in death by brothers, Tommy Reynolds and David Reynolds.
Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Home Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Edwards and the Rev. David Reynolds.
He is survived by a son, Danny Gray Reynolds of Vass; a daughter, Sandra Reynolds Donathan of Sanford; a sister, Joyce Blake of West End and four grandchildren.
The family will be at the home of Sandra Donathan, 3109 Parkwood Drive, Sanford.
Arrangements are by Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

ESTELLE SMITH
LILLINGTON - Estelle Byrd Smith, 99, of Lillington, died Tuesday (8/17/04) at home.
She was born July 5, 1905, to John A. and Mary Henrietta Howard Byrd. She graduated from Lillington High School in 1925. She was a member and former pianist of Flat Branch Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the choir for more than 50 years and was the oldest member of the congregation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar S. Smith, and sons, Harold and Theodore Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Flat Branch Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Bertrand Pitchford and the Rev. Tom Spence. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann Smith Funderburk and husband Jim of Lillington; a son, Johnnie Smith and wife Ola of Fuquay-Varina; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home and other times at the home of Johnnie Smith and wife Ola of Fuquay-Varina.
Memorial gifts may be made to Flat Branch Presbyterian Church, 130 Darroch Road, Bunnlevel, N.C. 28323.

JAMES MITCHELL SR.
SANFORD - James H. Mitchell Sr., 67, of 3402 Renee Drive, died Saturday (8/14/04) at Central Carolina Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at Piney Grove FWB Church in Fayetteville by Pastor Kirby Haire. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by sons, James H. Mitchell Jr. of Broadway and Jerry Mitchell of Sanford; and a daughter, Patricia Ann Mitchell of Sanford.
The family will receive friends at home.
Arrangements are by Wiseman Mortuary.

MARY GARROTT
PITTSBORO - Mary Jane "Baggo" Garrott, 88, formerly of Melbourne, Fla., died Monday (8/16/04) at the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields in Mebane. She was born May 14, 1916, in Chicago, Ill., a daughter of Frank and Ethel Faulhaver. After graduating from high school, she attended business college for two years. When she finished school, she went to work for Pan American Airlines, where she met her future husband, Martin Garrott. Following her marriage, she became a homemaker. They resided in the Miami area and were married for 36 years before his death.
She is survived by her daughter, Josephine Couts of Melbourne, Fla.; a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren
No memorial service is scheduled.
Memorial gifts may be made to either the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center, Box 3828, DUMC, Durham, North Carolina 27710; or to the American Cancer Society, 11 South Boylan, Suite 221, Raleigh, N.C. 27603.

MAGGIE McLEAN
LILLINGTON - Maggie Bell McLean, 86, of 616 Moores Chapel Road, died Monday (8/16/04) at Central Carolina Hospital in Sanford.
Arrangements are by Dafford-Dunn Funeral Home.

DOROTHY LEMONS
GREENWOOD, Ind. - Dorothy E. Lemons, 83, of Greenwood, died Sunday (8/15/04) at Miller's Merry Manor, Hope, Ind.
Born June 3, 1921, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Donnie and Annie Wicker Pattishall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Lemons.
She was a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church.
Funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and Crematory, Greenwood Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
Surviving are a son, a daughter, two sisters, five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

ELIZABETH BUTLER
LILLINGTON - Elizabeth W. Butler, of Lillington, died Tuesday (8/17/04) at Oakhaven Rest Home, Sanford.

SANFORD - Dwynne Reginald Cole, 51, of 1716 Carr Creek Drive, died Monday (8/16/04) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

MARTHA SHAW
LILLINGTON - Martha Ballard Shaw, 79, of Lillington died Tuesday (10/5/04) at Rex Nursing Center of Apex.
She was born Jan. 15, 1925, in Harnett County to M.L. and Mabel Sanford Ballard. She was a graduate of Wake Forest University and was a resident of Charlotte for more than 35 years where she was a community volunteer and member of Myers Park Baptist Church. She returned to Harnett County in 1989 and continued her community involvement with the Friends of the Harnett County Library. A lifelong Democrat, she worked on may local, state and national campaigns. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Allen Shaw.
Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Lillington Presbyterian Church by Dr. William Goodnight.
Surviving are daughters Carol Shaw and husband David McCorkle of Cary, Sarah E. Shaw of Durham and Mabel M. Shaw and husband Tom Jacobson of Alexandria, Va.; a foster daughter, Alice Ann Arrowood and husband Wayne of Minnesota; and six grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at her residence immediately following the service.
Memorial gifts may be made in memory of Martha Shaw to the Friends of the Library, P.O. Box 1149, Lillington, N.C. 27546.

LILLINGTON - Ida McDonald Dean Wallace, 95, of Lillington died Tuesday (10/5/04) at Brookfield Retirement Center in Lillington.
