ASBY LESLIE
CARTHAGE - Asby Vest Leslie, 89, of Carthage, died Monday (7/28/03) at HCR Manor Care in Pinehurst.
A native of King, she grew up in West End and was a daughter of the late George and Ella Featherstone Vest. She was preceded in death by her son, Neill Archie McLeod Jr. For many years, she worked for the Pinehurst Country Club and Shields Drug Store in Carthage. She was very active in the First Presbyterian Church in Carthage and later in Priest Hill Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Priest Hill Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Michael Herring and the Rev. Robert Yandle. Burial will follow in Cross Hill Cemetery.
She is survived by daughters, Betty Picerno and Linda Phillips and husband, Tommy, all of Carthage, and Ruth McIntosh and husband, Van, of Troy; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Linda and Tommy Phillips.

SAMMIE WHITE JR.
SILER CITY - Sammie White Jr., 85, of 4292 Alston Bridge Road, died Sunday (7/27/03) at Chatham Hospital.
He was a native of Alamance County and a retired employee of Chatham Novelty. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter White.
Funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Gees Grove A.M.E Zion Church with the Rev. Billy Siler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by sisters, Avis Martin and husband, J.C., of Snow Camp and Bonnie Farrar of Staley; brothers, Floyd White and Troy White, both of Siler City, and Dee Lacy White and wife, Lois, of Staten Island, N.Y.; and a sister-in-law, Annie White of Siler City.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Gees Grove A.M.E. Zion Church.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Katie Bell Williams, 90, of Columbia, mother of Joe B. Mitchell and wife, Lucille, of Goldston, died Saturday (7/26/03) at Providence Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Good Aim Baptist Church in Elgin, S.C. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
She is survived by another son and two daughters of South Carolina.

SANFORD- John Eldridge Brown, 68, of Sanford, died Monday (7/28/03) at Central Carolina Hospital.
He was a son of the late Donnie and Addie Parker Brown. He was preceded in death by brothers Carson Brown and Wilton Brown.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rogers Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Archie Brown. Burial will follow in the Broadway Town Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Mashburn Brown; sons, John Brown Jr. and wife, Cheryl, Alton Lee Brown and wife, Mia, Ronald Brown, Donald Brown and wife, Kristine, and Donnie Brown, all of Sanford, and Michael Brown and wife, Mary, of Jacksonville; daughters, Tammy Brown and Dianne Brown, both of Sanford; sisters, Beulah Avery of Roseboro, Alma Simmons of Dunn and Janice Evans of Asheboro; brothers, Lloyd Brown of Shelby and Sam Brown of Wallace; 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

ANNE WAGNER
SOUTHERN PINES - Anne Pelton Wagner, 90, of 100 E. Rhode Island Ave., Penick Village, died Sunday (7/27/03) at home.
Born in Westfield, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late Roy Ramsey Pelton and Laura Elizabeth Wratten Pelton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick A. Wagner, and a sister, Ruth P. Romero. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. She was a member of Carolina Trace Country Club, P.E.O, many different bridge clubs, garden clubs and loved to travel.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke United Methodist Church Chapel by the Rev. Carl Frazier. There will be a private burial.
She is survived by a son, Frederick A. Wagner Jr. and wife, Christy, of Woodway, Texas; a brother, Frank R. Pelton and wife, Brownie, of Knoxville, Tenn; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

DURHAM - Barbara Jean Chalmers Atkins, formerly of Sanford, died Sunday (7/27/03) at Duke Hospital.

LEMON SPRINGS - Funeral for James Ralph Smith, 62, of 2644 Pilson Road, who died Thursday (7/24/03), was held Sunday at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Michael Boyette. Burial followed in Buffalo Cemetery.
Celia Collins and Amanda Toro sang.
Pallbearers were Johnny Smith, Everett Smith Jr., Stacy English, Roy English, Dave Smith and Jerry Smith.

SANFORD - Funeral for Charles Buie, 55, of the 2500 block of Tidewater Drive, who died Wednesday (7/23/03), was held Saturday at Chapel Metropolitan Funeral Service with the Rev. Elmer Phillips officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Norfolk, Va.
The choir sang. Ronnie Ricks sang a solo.
Pallbearers were family and friends.

WILLIAM EAMES JR.
RALEIGH - William Walter "Chuck" Eames Jr. of Springmoor Retirement Community died Sunday (7/27/03).
Mr. Eames was born on Jan. 4, 1910, in Newport News, Va., to the late William Walter and Annie Christian Eames. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Martha Hoffman Eames, and daughter, Charlotte Eames Banks, and her husband, Oliver Banks, of Raleigh.
Mr. Eames was educated in Virginia and served in the Army of the United States from 1942-1946 as a captain.
He retired in 1980 as vice president of Sanford Brick and Tile Company of Sanford.
He was a past president of the Sanford Kiwanis Club, a Mason, a Shriner and a member of Greystone Baptist Church.
Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m today in the Springmoor Auditorium. Burial will be at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, Va., at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

BEAR CREEK - Betty Phillips Rives, 65, of 8420 Old Hwy. 421 South, died Saturday (7/26/03) at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport.
Mrs. Rives was a native of Chatham County and was a retired teacher assistant at J.S. Waters School. She was a member of Goldston Baptist Church, as well as treasurer and member of the Adult #3 Sunday School Class.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Goldston Baptist Church, 190 N. Church St., Goldston, by the Rev. David Hicks and the Rev. Woodrow Whitt. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Siler City.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin Rives of Bear Creek; daughters Michelle R. Sanders and Sherrie Rives, both of Bear Creek; a sister, Joanne Phillips of Siler City; a granddaughter, Hannah Sanders of Bear Creek; nephews Joel Brower and Joe E. Hairr, both of Siler City; and a great-nephew, Joshua Brower of Siler City.
The family received friends Monday at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 N. Second Ave., Siler City, and will receive them at other times at the home.

RUBY SLOAN
SANFORD - Ruby Pattishall Sloan, 88, wife of the late N.P. Sloan, passed away at her home on Sunday, July 27, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leondias and Minnie Pattishall; her husband, N.P. Sloan; her sons, Bobby L. Sloan and Joe Dan Sloan; by a daughter, Patty Lou Sloan; and by two sisters, Pecola Mitchell and Allie Helms.
Funeral will be conducted Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at 4 p.m. at Zion Christian Church by Rev. Steve Johnson, Rev. John Paschal and Rev. Keith Miller. Burial will follow at Shallow Well Cemetery.
The body was carried from Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home to the family home located at 223 Eleventh St., Sanford, N.C. The family will receive friends at any time.
