CHARLES BALLIEW
CARTHAGE - Charles L. Balliew, 65, of 1440 Rays Bridge Road died Monday (10/4/04) at his residence.
A native of Calhoun, Ga., he was a son of the late Clyde and Louise Carden Balliew. He retired from Proctor Silex Inc. of Southern Pines as a supervisor after 38 years of service.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Yates-Thagard Baptist Church by Pastor Steve Johnson. Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Friday at Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, Va.
Surviving are a daughter, Kimberly Balliew of Driver, Va.; a son, B. Keith Balliew of Whispering Pines; a brother, Bobby Balliew of Calhoun, Ga.; and a grandson.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home.

GEORGE McELVEEN
CAMERON - George Elvin McElveen, 72, of 2540 Pilson Road, Cameron, died Sunday (10/3/04) at Central Carolina Hospital.
Born in Florence County, S.C., he was a son of the late George Bradley McElveen and Ella Mae Cook McElveen. He was preceded in death by a son, George "Ricky" McElveen, and four brothers, Pete, Marvin, Melvin and James McElveen. He was a member of Hunt Springs Baptist Church. He retired from the U.S. Army as a Staff Sergeant and served in the Korean Conflict.
Funeral, with military rites, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hunt Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Crabtree. Burial will follow in Lee Memory Gardens.
Surviving are his wife, Edna Shoemake McElveen; daughters Molly McElveen, Cissy McElveen and Sandy McElveen, all of Cameron, and Pam McElveen and Elizabeth M. Norris, both of Sanford; and grandchildren Adam Yarboro, Nick McElveen, Amanda McElveen, Aaron McElveen, Tiffany McElveen and Carrie Norris.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.
WILLIAM PATTERSON
BURLINGTON - William Carl "Pat" Patterson, 76, of 514 Brookline Drive died Wednesday (9/29/04) at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
A native of Harnett County, he was the husband of Carolyn Wilson Patterson, who survives, and the son of the late Glover King and Ella Norton Patterson. He was retired from GE in Mebane and Pat's Barber Shop in Burlington. He was a member of St. John's New Mission United Church of Christ and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Survivors other than his wife of the home, include a daughter, Shawn Patterson Billings of Graham; two sons, Steven Carl Patterson of King and Kevin Douglas Patterson of Raleigh; two sisters, Hazel Stone of Siler City and Lois Allen of Greenville; two brothers, James Patterson of Siler City and Lee Patterson of Sanford; and five grandchildrebn.
The funeral was held Friday at St. John's New Mission United Church of Christ by the Rev. Mark Painter and the Rev. Jerry Moore. Burial followed in Alamance Memorial Park.
Arrangements were by McClure Funeral Home, Graham.
EFFIE FARRELL
PITTSBORO - Effie Pauline Farrell, 75, of 64 Cedar Lane died Monday (10/4/04) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
A native of Chatham County, she was retired from Chatham Mills. She was a member of Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hanks Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. Kelly Shifflet and the Rev. Ray Gooch. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are brothers Lewis Farrell of Pittsboro and Wade Farrell of Durham; a niece, Teresa F. Holmes; a nephew, Peter D. Farrell; and a great-nephew, Dustin Holmes.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Griffin Funeral Service and Cremation.
MARY POE
BROADWAY - Mary Joyce Kelly Poe, 80, of 03 Watson Lake Drive died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at her home.
She was born in Lee County on March 31, 1924, the daughter of the late Charles Oscar Kelly and Mamie Elizabeth Kelly Kelly.
Surviving are her husband, Reid Poe; a son, Mickey Poe and wife Donna McNeill Poe of Broadway; two grandchildren, Candace P. Blackburn and husband Paul and Michael Dean Poe; and two great-grandchildren, Carson Blackburn and Logan Blackburn.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Broadway United Methodist Church by the Rev. Ray Brooks. Burial will follow in the Broadway Town Cemetery.
The family received friends Monday evening at the Smith Funeral Home in Broadway and at other times will receive friends at the residence.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Broadway United Methodist Church, 106 Church St., Broadway, N.C. 27505.

ELSIE HARGRAVES
PITTSBORO - Elsie Mann Hargraves, 83, of River Road died Friday (10/15/04) at Laurels of Chatham following a long period of declining health.
She was born April 21, 1921, in Chatham County, a daughter of the late Warden and Daisy Thompson Mann. She was a graduate of Pittsboro School. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hargraves. She was a member of Orange Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was active as long as her health permitted. She was a lover of music, and country dances. She also enjoyed crocheting and reading. She was a homemaker most of her adult life.
Funeral was held Monday at Orange Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Pat Sykes. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Lynn Riley of Pittsboro; a son, James Hargraves of Pittsboro; a sister, Hazel Ray of Chesapeake, Va.; a brother, John Mann of Pittsboro; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

SANFORD - Tiny Mae Holloway, 85, of Sanford died Saturday (10/16/04) at Central Carolina Hospital.
Funeral will be held at Caliman Funeral Service, 3700 Refugee Road, Columbus, Ohio, at a later date.
Surviving are a daughter, Sarah Johnson of Sanford; sons Curtis Holloway, Major Holloway, Willie Holloway and David Holloway, all of Columbus.
Arrangements are by Watson Mortuary.
JOHN WOOD
SANFORD - John Davis "J.D." Wood, 78, of Sanford died Sunday (10/17/04) at his residence.
He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an avid fisherman, woodworker and gardener. He attended Flat Springs Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and two sisters.
Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Flat Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Del Parkerson.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mildred G. Wood; sons Dwight Wood and wife Teresa of Siler City and James Wood and wife Bonnie of Sanford; daughters Patricia Johnson and husband Harold of Sanford and Rhonda Vance and husband Phil of King; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The body may be viewed one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

CAMERON - Frances Mangum Taylor, 72, of 45 Farrington Road died Saturday (10/16/04) at Central Carolina Hospital.
A native of Wake County, she was a daughter of the late O.H. and Minnie Dupree Mangum. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Taylor; brothers, Brooks Mangum and Buford Mangum; and a sister, Adele Bass.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Baptist Church by the Rev. George Brice and the Rev. Hollis Fedrick. Burial will follow in the Cameron Hill Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Surviving are sons Richard Taylor and Rodney Taylor, both of Cameron; daughters Lu Anne Godwin of Cameron and Shelia Taylor Fraley and husband Bill of Sanford; a sister, Edna Atkins of Wendell; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The body will be carried to the home at 2 p.m. today and the family will receive friends.

LILLINGTON - Michael James Denning, 40, of Lillington died Sunday (10/17/04) as the result of an automobile accident.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert A. and Hazel Holder Denning. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was an active reservist.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Spring Hill United Methodist Church by the Rev. Keith Miller and the Rev. Bobby Tyson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Amanda Nicole Denning of Wisconsin, and a sister, Gail Sutton of Tennessee.

MARY KRAMER
LILLINGTON - Mary S. Kramer, 92, of Lillington died Sunday (10/17/04) at her home.
She taught kindergarten for 11 years at St. Frances of Assisi Church in Allentown, Pa. She was a supervisor for 13 years at Hess' Department Store in Allentown. After moving to North Carolina, she was active with the Red Cross at Fort Bragg for seven years. She was a faithful member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Fayetteville and participated in the Meals on Wheels program for six years in Lillington.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church by Father Williard Ruscinski. Burial will follow in Harnett Memorial Park.
Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Joseph Kramer; daughters Mare E. Nolf of Florida, Robertajo Kramer of Lillington and Fran Brauchle of Pennsylvania; a son, Joseph R. Kramer Jr. of Pennsylvania; an adopted daughter, Pat Williams of Lillington; sisters Alverta Roller and Doll Gerald, both of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church and at other times at her residence.
