LILLINGTON - Funeral service for Flarie W. Cameron, 97, of Lilllington, who died Wednesday (6/11/03), were held Saturday at Leaflet Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dawes Graybeal. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Vocalist was Tammy Wilson. Organist was Danny Hester.
Pallbearers were Tim Cameron, Jeff Cameron, Terry Griffin, Pat Rosser, Taft Cameron and Ross C. Wood.

BROADWAY - Funeral service for Amanda McLeod McFarland, 97, of 520 McFarland Road, who died Thursday (6/12/03), was held Sunday at Mt. Pisgah Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Doug Houston. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Barry Watkins, Brent Watkins, Bobby Woodell, Tommy Dingess, Malcolm Knight, Ronnie Thomas, Jerrry McNeill, and Tim McFarland.

SANFORD - Funeral service for Ruth Mae Griffin, 71, of 374 Hunters Ridge Road, who died Monday (6/9/03), was held Saturday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. George Dark. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Floral bearers were by Linda Martin, Gloria Simon Tart, Essie Kersey, Piedrina Tina Hicks, Barbara Worthy and Bernice White.

CAMERON - Funeral services for Johnny Earl Jeter, 37, of 722 Lizzie Jeter Lane, who died Thursday (6/12/03), were held Sunday at Green Grove A.M.E. Zion Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Sister Janet McNeill gave the Old and New testament readings. Rev. A.L. Wright gave the prayer. Katrina Brown gave the acknowledgement. Rev. Addie McCrimmon, Sister Willie Upchurch and the Rev. A.L. Wright gave remarks. Robert McCrimmon sang a solo. Rev. Carolyn Radcliff gave the eulogy.
Musicians were Ellis Leslie and Wilfred Steadman.
Floral bearers were Willamenia Blue, Pauline McIntyre and Linda F. Fox.

SANFORD - Funeral service for Ruth Willett Covan, of Jefferson Davis Highway, who died Friday (6/13/03), were held Monday at Grace Chapel Church by the Rev. Rudy Holland and the Rev. Bob Yandle. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

NANCY WOMACK
OLIVIA - Funeral service for Nancy Sharpe Womack, 99, of 4504 N.C. 87 South, who died Saturday (6/14/03), was held Monday at Swann Station Baptist Church by the Rev. Russell Blackmon. Burial followed in Cameron Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Larry Sharpe, Jack Sharpe, John Albert Sharpe, Sam Hall, David Womack and Ken Langley.

SANFORD - Funeral services for Stephen Voorhees, 59, of Sanford, who died Friday (6/13/03), were held Monday at Miller-Boles Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Carter officiating. Burial followed in Lee Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers were Walter Mill, Jordan Kemp, Jamie Thomas, Bailey Way, Kenny Garrett and Scott Boyd.

LINDEN - Funeral service for William Tyler Hair, infant, of Linden, who died Friday (6/13/03), was held Monday at the Hair family Cemetery, Linden.
EVELYN WADE KENNEDY
BROADWAY - Evelyn Wade Kennedy, 89, of Broadway, died Monday (6/16/03).
She was born on Nov. 16, 1914, in Harnett County. She married Haskell Kennedy in 1934 and they had two daughters, Frances Blondell Kennedy and Frankie Janell Kennedy. She and her husband farmed in the Greenwood community of Lee County until her husband was critically injured in an automobile accident. That is when she moved to Sanford where she got a job at the Lee County Library in order to support the family until her husband recovered. When World War II began she was trained at the old Sanford High School to join the workforce at Edwards Company which made airplane landing gears for the war effort. She was skilled in running a lathe, a milling machine and a punch press. After the war, she worked for Saco-Lowell at the same facility. In 1958, she opened the first day care center and kindergarten in Sanford from which she retired in 1974.
After retirement, she was very active in community affairs. She was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary, the Broadway Women's Club and a volunteer worker for the Red Cross for many years. She was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Christ in Sanford form 1948 to 2000. At the time of her death, she was a member of Broadway Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Haskell Kennedy; a daughter, Frankie Kennedy Sawyer; sisters, Lavern Wade and Vernell Wade Sauls; and brothers, William E. Wade, Clarence Wade and Lex Alvin Wade.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Broadway Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Harold Stone. Burial will follow in Lee Memory Gardens in Sanford.
She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Frances Kennedy Andrews, at home; a grandson, David Franklin Andrews Jr. and wife Lori and son Dylan of Broadway; a granddaughter, Lisa Andrews Radford and daughter Cherish and son Christopher of Faison; sisters, Inez Wade Page, Margaret Wade Faull and Clara Wade Zachary, all of Lillington; and brothers, Birk E. Wade of Sanford and Herbert Lee Wade of Lillington.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home.

EDNA HARTNESS
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Edna Gladden Hartness, of 210 Lake Circle Drive, Paris Mountain, a philanthropist, nurse, community volunteer and naturalist, died on Saturday, June 14, 2003, at her home.
Born in Sanford, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Theron E. and Ollie Houser Gladden. She was a graduate of Sanford High School and trained for nursing at Highsmith Hospital, Fayetteville, N.C., and held an honorary doctorate of humanities degree from Furman University. Mrs. Harness received her pilot's license and was a Civil Air Patrol officer during World War II where she trained young recruits in military courtesy and discipline, aircraft instructions and shore patrol. She also worked with the Red Cross during World War II.
Mrs. Hartness was an avid mountain hiker, deep sea fisherwoman and world traveler, traveling with her children and grandchildren to many foreign countries. She was a Silver Life Master Duplicate Bridge Player, a member of Tri-Delta Sorority and the Gridley Club. She received the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award for her "spirit of helpfulness and awareness of the beauty and value of the intangible elements of live."
Mrs. Hartness worked at the Child Development Center for a number of years and was involved in many civic and charitable organizations including the Greenville Humane Society, Greenville Art Museum, Governor's School of the Arts, Greenville Little Theatre and the American Cancer Society's Lawn and Lake Gala. She was an avid supporter of Furman University's Music Department where she was originator of the Gladden Quartet and gave a yearly scholarship to the most promising music student. She and Mr. Hartness donated the Harness Pavilion (which adjoins the rose garden) to Furman University.
Mrs. Harness was a conservator of nature and animals and a Girl Scout leader. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Greenville, and the Chamblin Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Signor Hartness, at home; a daughter, Martha Joan H. Guinn and her husband Warren Guinn of River Falls, S.C.; sons, Thomas Patterson Hartness and his wife Mary Lou Hartness and Robert Gladden Hartness and his wife Rebecca Hartness of Greenville; seven grandchildren, David Pringle Hartness and his wife Adrian Hartness, Sean Patterson Hartness and his wife Gina Hartness, Thomas Robert Foster and his wife Shouda Foster, Bothwell John Foster and his wife Sandy Foster, Amy Jo Guinn, Katheryn H. Norwood and her husband Ben Norwood III and Carole Lynn Hartness; seven great-grandchildren, Harper Jo Foster, Hannah Hartness Foster, Haley August Foster, Benjamin King Norwood IV, Rebecca Kathryn Norwood, William Thomas Hartness and Graham Alexander Hartness.
A memorial service was held Monday, June 16, at First Baptist Church in Greenville with visitation to follow at the church. A private burial will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park.

FAYDINE WEBSTER
PITTSBORO - Faydine Johnson Webster, 81, of Pittsboro, died Sunday (6/15/03).
A native of Chatham County, she was a loving homemaker. She was a friend to many in the community over the years, providing peace to so many. She was a member of Pittsboro Baptist Church.
Faydine was preceded in death by her daughter, Nellie Faye Webster Rollins, and a grandson, Hugh O. Rollins III.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pittsboro Baptist Church by the Rev. Tripp Harmon and the Rev. Ray Gooch. Interment will follow in Emmaus Baptist Church Cemetery.
Faydine is survived by her son, James A. Webster Jr. of Pittsboro; a son-in-law, Hugh Rollins of Fuquay-Varina; grandchildren, Jay Webster and wife Melanie, Cecil Webster and wife Kelly, Faith Johnson and husband Tommy, all of Pittsboro; and two great-grandchildren, Ryan Webster and Avery Johnson, both of Pittsboro.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Griffin Funeral Service.

SLATON WAY
SANFORD - Slaton Thomas Way, 19, of 3108 Lemon Springs Road, died Saturday (6/21/03) at Southeastern Hospital in Lumberton.
A native of Clark County, Ga., he was a son of Bailey Thomas Way and the late Cheryl Sailors Way. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jack and Helen Way.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Bob Brown. Burial will be in Buffalo Cemetery.
He is survived by his father, Bailey Thomas Way and a brother, Chris Way, both of Sanford; sisters, Valerie Thompson of Southport and Mary Lynn Duncan of Commerce, Ga.; grandmother, Lynda Sailors of Commerce, Ga.; half-sisters, Tracey Miller, Kim Phillips, Wendy Kotal and Misty Tatum, all of Georgia, and 12 nieces and nephews.

BRIAN NORRIS
SANFORD - Brian Keith Norris, 28, of Sanford, died Sunday (6/22/03) at Central Carolina Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Deborah Norris.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Cool Springs United Methodist Church by Pastor Ann Benson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his parents, Clarence Norris Jr. and wife Linda of Sanford; stepbrother Travis Tyner of Sanford and Opie Tyner of Connecticut.
The family will receive friends from 9 to 10:30 a.m. today at Cool Springs United Methodist Church and other times at the home of Clarence Norris Jr.
