DONALD PENCE
SANFORD - Donald Charles "Charlie" Pence, 82, of Sanford, passed away on Aug. 27, 2003.
He was born on Aug. 20, 1921, in San Antonio, Texas. He served his country with distinction as a West Point graduate, Class of 1943, and WWII veteran (major, USA, retired). He received the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart for extraordinary heroism in action against the enemy while serving with the 70th Infantry Division in the European Theatre of WWII. As a result of wounds received in this engagement, he was retired from the U.S. Army in 1946. He joined the Central Intelligence Agency shortly thereafter and served with that agency until retiring in 1973.
He authored "Ordeal in the Vosges" during his retirement which was a historical account of the 70th Division's actions in the Low Vosges Mountains of eastern France. He enjoyed keeping in touch with members of the 70th through reunions, correspondence and contributions to the division's historical periodicals and Web site.
He spent most of his retirement in Sanford with his loving wife, Mary Sue, who preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory: His daughters, Susan Link, Nancy Burbank, Gretchen Shires and Sharon Honer, his eight grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 6 in Skokie, Ill., at Memorial Park Cemetery, 9900 Gross Point Road, Skokie, Ill. 60076.

DEBRA CRANE
SANFORD - Debra Cox Crane, of Sanford, died Tuesday (2/3/04) at Central Carolina Hospital.
A native of Dearborn, Mich., she was a daughter of the late William Douglas Shepherd. She received an associate's degree at Oakland Community College in Auburn Hills, Mich., a bachelor's degree in philosophy at the University of Detroit, and was pursuing a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
She was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church and its Little Rock Scripture Study, a Bible study fellowship in Raleigh and was newly elected to the parish council at St. Stephen. She was a state-certified master gardener and a member of a garden club at Carolina Trace. She also volunteered at the Stevens Center.
Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Forbes. Burial will follow in Buffalo Cemetery.
Surviving are her husband, Bob Crane; a daughter, Emily Stachowski of Royal Oaks, Mich.; her mother, Margaret Shepherd and husband John Carr of Sanford; brothers, Hank Shepherd and wife Paula of Saginaw, Mich., and Doug Shepherd and wife Sandy of Onstead, Mich.; and seven nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Miller-Boles Funeral Home.

ZOLA PEARSON
SANFORD - Zola Buie Pearson, 81, of 3038 Khalif Court, died Saturday (1/31/04) at her residence.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Robinson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are daughters, Joyce Pearson and Patsy Lindsay and Cornelius Elijah, all of Sanford, and Bernice Morriset of Jamaica, N.Y.; sons, Jessie McDougald, Dennis McDougald, Wayne Pearson and Samuel Pearson, all of Lillington; and 23 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Union Grove UMC, Broadway.
ALICE SMITH
VASS - Alice Frye Smith, 88, of Vass, died Wednesday (2/4/04) at Pinehurst Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
Born June 30, 1914, in Moore County, she was a daughter of the late John and Lydia Kennedy Frye. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pearlie T. Smith.
Surviving are sons, Larry T. Smith of Greensboro and Jerry D. Smith of Southern Pines; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Boles Funeral Home and Crematory, Southern Pines.
HAZEL ROLOFF
BALTIMORE - Hazel Carroll Roloff, 76, of Baltimore, died Wednesday (2/2/04).
A native of Lee County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Ruth Holder Carroll.
Local survivors include sisters, Jeannie Perdue, Shirley Calendine and Janice Spivey, all of Sanford, N.C.

MARGARET MITCHELL
SILER CITY - Margaret Mitchell, 73, of 944 Mt. Vernon Springs, died Tuesday (2/3/04) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Funeral will be held Saturday at Gees Grove AME Zion Church. Arrangements are by Knotts Funeral Home.
FRANKLIN KELLY
SANFORD - Funeral for Franklin Kelly, 47, of 509 W. Rose St., who died Sunday (2/1/04), was held Wednesday at the Star of Hope Original Free Will Baptist Church by Bishop A.L. Smith. Prayer of comfort was given by Bishop Larry Ray. Old Testament scripture was read by Elder Jimmy Lee. New Testament scripture was read by Bishop Robert Murphy. Entombment followed at Lee Memory Gardens.
Soloist was the Rev. Joe Green. Acknowledgment and obituary were by Devora Murchison.
Floralbearers were Mary Hill, Mary Norman, Torchy Winston, Beverly Matthews and Beverly James.
Pallbearers were MacKenzie Douglas, Angelo Ray, Von Lee Hunter, John Miles, Michael McLeod and Anthony McLeod.
GEORGE GOODE
SANFORD - George C. Goode, 76, of 154 Fountainwood Drive, died Sunday (2/1/04) at Central Carolina Hospital.
A native of Guilford County, he was a son of the late George Sr. and Annie Lee Morgan Goode. He was preceded in death by his wife, Millie Weis Goode. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Stokesdale United Methodist Church Cemetery, Stokesdale, by the Rev. Allen Vanmetor.
Surviving are daughters, Brenda Denton of Sanford and Vickie Cotten of Spring Lake; his stepmother, Mary Tedder of Stokesdale; stepsisters, Thelma Bray and Imagene Reid, both of Greensboro; a half-brother, Paul Hilton of Greensboro; and a grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home.

SANFORD - Anna Marie Wroble, of 119 Northridge Trail, Carolina Trace, died Thursday (1/22/04).
Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Casey Chapel at St. Luke United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dr. Carl Frazier.
Among the survivors are her daughter, Sandra Woolard and husband Carl of Carolina Trace.

LILLINGTON - Funeral for Woodrow "Buddy" Norris Sr., 77, of Lillington, who died Friday (1/30/04), was held Tuesday at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home by the Rev. Sexton Vann Sr. and the Rev. Billy Crabtree. Burial followed in Harnett Memorial Park.
Pianist and vocalist was Rick West.
Pallbearers were Steven Norris, James McPherson, Chris Norris, Eric Norris, Benjamin Norris and Casey Norris.

SANFORD - Funeral for James "Burt" Lee Mashburn, 52, of Sanford, who died Saturday (1/31/04), was held Tuesday at Miller-Boles Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Steve Simpson. Burial followed in Lee Memory Gardens.
Sherry Kennedy sang and played the organ. Mike Simpson sang.
Pallbearers were Jeff Clark, Craig Stewart, Jimmy Bailey, Roger Griffith, Daryl W. Mitchell, Scott Bullard, Ronnie Thomas and Jerry Wicker.
