MABEL CLARK
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Mabel Jean Taylor Clark, 73, formerly of Sanford, died Saturday (7/19/03).
A native of Durham, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Henry and Mabel Wright Taylor. She attended Durham schools and was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Clark worked as volunteer at Butner when she met her late husband during the Korean Conflict. She lived in Sanford, N.C., for about six years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Boyd Clark.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Maplewood Cemetery.
She is survived by sons, James B. Clark Jr. of Pittsboro, N.C., and Kenneth R. Clark of Sanford, a daughter, Sheila Dawn Clark of Greenville, S.C., brothers, Norman Taylor and Marion Taylor, both of Durham; and a grandson, Christopher Clark of Lewisburg, Ky.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.
MARY GOLBY
DURHAM - Mary Alice Blue Golby, M.D., of Durham, died Sunday (4/4/04) at home.
Born in 1926 near Carthage, she was a daughter of the late Zebulon Vance Blue and the late Mary Rankin Blue of the Eureka community near Carthage.
She was a member of Eureka Presbyterian Church and attended Farm Life School at Eureka, where she graduated as valedictorian. In 1948, she graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a bachelor's degree in biology. She obtained an associate degree in medicine from the UNC School of Medicine in 1950, then graduated from George Washington School of Medicine with an M.D. degree with distinction in 1953.
That same year, she married Robert L. Golby, M.D. After an internship and residency at Watts Hospital in Durham, she began private practice in internal medicine in 1959 in Durham. She was on the staff of Watts Hospital, then of Durham Regional Hospital. She served for several years as a clinical instructor in medicine of UNC medical students at Durham Regional Hospital.
She was a member of the Durham-Orange County Medical Association, the N.C. Medical Society and the American Medical Association. After retiring in 1988, she was interested in the protection of watersheds, clean water and other environmental issues, and was a member of the Durham County Forestry Association.
Funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eureka Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jean Ganzel and the Rev. Charles Meek. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Surviving are her husband Robert Louis Golby; a daughter, Sarah Blue Golby, at home; a son, Andrew Mark Golby of the home; and a brother, Herbert Nelson Blue and wife Helen Anne Blue of Southern Pines.
The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. Wednesday for one hour prior to the service at Eureka Presbyterian Church.

MARGARET BURGESS
BROADWAY - Margaret Williams Burgess, 75, of Broadway, died Sunday (4/4/04) at Central Carolina Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late John Raymond and Ethel Black Williams.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home by the Rev. David Benson. Burial will be in the Summerville Presbyterian Church cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Mack Burgess, at home; a daughter, Sarah Blue Golby, at home; a stepson, Ricky Burgess of Broadway; sisters, Marie Taylor of Lillington, Carolyn Williams of Bunnlevel and Eunice Smith of Indiana; brothers, John Williams of Dunn, John Raymond Williams Jr. of Garner and Hubert Williams of California; three grandsons and seven great-grandchildren.

ROBERT MCLEAN
CAMERON - Robert Lee McLean, 65, of 706 McKoy Town Road, died Saturday (4/3/04) at home.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Church of God on McKoy Town Road.
He is survived by his wife, Helen McLean; a daughter, Antoinette Cox of Johnsonville; a son, Rodney Cox and husband Betty of Lillington; stepsons, Valdis Davis and wife Esther of Winston-Salem, Norman Davis and wife Mona of Germany and Bernard Davis and wife Robin of Sanford; brothers, Johnny McLean and wife Betty of Sanford and Neil McLean and wife Mary of Pineview; sisters, Dandi McLean and Annie Pulley and husband Robert, both of Sanford, and Elouise Swann and husband Abel of Swanns Station; and eight grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Church of God.

BETTY COOK
PITTSBORO - Betty Lou Cook, 68, of Castle Rock Farm Road, died Saturday (4/3/04) at her residence.
A Chatham County native, she was a daughter of Arlie Colon Cook and Clatie Mae Woody Cook. She was a graduate of Silk Hope School and was a member of Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church. She was employed for 25 years with Kayser-Roth, and also worked for Hardees approximately eight years prior to her retirement.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Wilbur Cook; and a sister, Maxine Farrell.
Surviving are a brother and sister-in-law, James and Lottie Cook of Pittsboro; a sister-in-law, Estelle Cook; a brother-in-law, Roscoe Farrell; several cousins, three nieces and three nephews.
Funeral service was conducted by Rev. Lemont Heminger and Rev. Ray Gooch Monday at Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Guests may call on the family at the residence of James and Lottie Cook.
Memorial gifts may be given to either Sapling Ridge United Methodist Church, 5016 Silk Hope Gum Springs Road, Pittsboro, or to UNC Hospice.

GILBERT SHAVER
VALDESE - Gilbert Jurney "Gil" Shaver, 73, of Valdese died Sunday (4/4/04) at the Shytle House.
A native of Iredell County, he was a son of the late Floyd Shaver and Isla Livengood Shaver.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the East Valdese Baptist Church by the Rev. Lacey Frye. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
Among survivors is a sister, Judy Harrington of Carthage.

BROADWAY - Funeral service for Woodrow McLean, 73, of 77 Luke Road, who died Sunday (3/28/04), was conducted Friday at Watson Mortuary by Elderess Marylyn Cross. Burial followed in Womack Cemetery.
Alfonso Worthan sang a solo. March'e McLean read a poem.
Floral bearers and pallbearers were friends of the family.

SANFORD - Funeral service for Addie Delois Edwards, of Sanford, who died Thursday (4/1/04), was held Sunday at Mt. Nebo Freewill Baptist Church. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Old Testament reading was by Minister Barbara Broughton. New Testament reading was by Elder Jessie Fairley. Prayer was by the Rev. Barry N. Palmer. Acknowledgement was by Sister Deloris Fox. A poem was read by Carol Taitt. Eulogy was by Elder J.H. Fairley. Organist was Jessie Petty.
