LEONARD SHATTUCK
SANFORD - Leonard L. Shattuck, 72, of Sanford, formerly of Massachusetts, died Saturday (5/24/03) at his residence.
Born in Fitchburg, Mass., on Oct. 5, 1930. He was a son of the late Louis Shattuck and Nilda Hebert Shattuck. He was a graduate of Ashby High School, Lawrence Academy and Stevens Business College. He was a business consultant and the owner of a business contracting company. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Shattuck, and a sister, Eileen Ryan.
Funeral will be private.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Joan R. Shattuck; sons, Daniel K. Shattuck and Donald K. Shattuck, both of Sanford, David J. Shattuck of Sterling, Mass., and Douglas J. Shattuck of Shirley, Mass.; daughters, Debra A. Sbrogna of Boston, and Doreen A. Blanchette of Groton, Mass.; a brother, Richard Shattuck of Dennisport, Mass.; and six grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Miller-Boles Funeral Home.

SANFORD - Funeral for Rachel H. Carter, 82, of Sanford, who died Wednesday (5/21/03), was held Saturday at Miller-Boles Funeral Home by the Rev. Rudy Holland. Burial followed in the Shallow Well United Church of Christ cemetery.
Organist was Linda Spivey. Special music was by Donald Perrell.
Pallbearers were Derrick Reeves, Donnie Martindale, Ray Carter, Tracy Carter, Wayne Carter and Billy Carter.

SANFORD - Graveside service for Roy Benjamin Jones, 79, of 2639 Mallard Cove Road, who died Thursday (5/22/03), was held Saturday at Grace Chapel cemetery by Tom Workman.

SANFORD - Andrew Palmer, 71, of 740 Tempting Church Road, died Saturday (5/24/03) at his residence.

SANFORD - Funeral for Evangelist Elsie Feaster, 61, of 1015 San-Lee Drive, who died Monday (5/19/03), was held Friday at House of Refuge, Sanford, by Bishop Thomas Matthews. Eulogy was given by the Rev. Cathy Jones. Old Testament reading was given by Minister Cathy Ray. New Testament reading was given by the Rev. Brenda Harrington. Prayer of comfort was given by the Rev. Harrison Ray. Burial followed in Lee Memory Gardens.
The Prince Chapel Mass Choir sang. The Taylor Brothers sang a duet. Soloist was Naomi Worthy. A poem was read by Patricia Taylor. Acknowledgments were given by Evangelist Elizabeth Palmer. Tribute was given by Benjamin M. Taylor.
Floralbearers were nieces and friends of the family.
Pallbearers were nephews and friends of the family.

JAMES BROWN SR.
LILLINGTON - James B. Brown Sr., 76, of Lillington, died Thursday (5/22/03) at Jackson Hospital, Montgomery, Ala.
He was born July 19, 1926, in Harnett County, to the late A.C. and Lizzie McLean Brown. He was a member of the Harnett County Shrine Club. He was a member and past master of the Lillington Masonic Lodge, past worthy patron of the Lillington Order of Eastern Star, member of Scottish Rite, Sudan temple and past president of the Harnett County Shrine Club.
He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, having served as a past deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was active in the Happy Travelers Club and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by brothers, Chester A. Brown and Perry S. Brown.
Funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church, Mamers, by the Rev. Martin Groover. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Masonic rites.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Elsie Byrd Brown; a daughter, Carol B. Norfolk of Goldsboro; sons, James B. Brown Jr., David Lee Brown and wife Gail and Timothy B. Brown and wife Carolyn, all of Lillington, and Neal A. Brown and wife Tanya of Greenville; and nine grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday at O'Quinn-Peebles Funeral Home.

SANFORD - James W. McPherson, 75, of Sanford, died Friday (5/23/03) at Central Carolina Hospital.
Born in Lee county, he was a veteran of World War II. He was a son of the late Redford E. and Ella Mims McPherson.
Graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Buffalo Cemetery by the Rev. George Brice.
Surviving are sisters, Frances Arnett Oslin of Sanford and Alice Bell McPherson of Lillington, and a niece and a nephew.
Arrangements are by Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home.

CAMERON - Fred H. Peeples, 53, of 311 Ponderosa Road, died Tuesday (5/20/03) at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.
Funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Benhaven School in Olivia by the Rev. T.L. Brower. Burial will follow in Johnsonville Community Cemetery, Cameron.
Surviving are his wife, Esther Peeples; daughters, Stephanie Hunter and husband Martin and Crystal Rollins, all of Cameron; sons, Frederick Peeples of Decatur, Ga., Gerald F. Rollins and wife Renner of Dayton, Ohio, and Kinte Rollins of Dayton; his mother, Katherine Peeples of Decatur; brothers, John Henry, Johnny, Ray, Jerome, Wayne, Chris, Ken and Nathan Peeples, all of Decatur; sisters, Shirley, Mary and Katrina Broughton, all of Georgia; his mother-in-law, Onita Hendon of Cameron; six grandchildren, five sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law and nieces and nephews.

SANFORD - Funeral for Margaret Martin Bates, 86, of Sanford, who died Tuesday (5/20/03), was held Friday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery by Pastor Mike Oldham and the Rev. James Estes.
Special music was provided by Gloria Chastain.
Pallbearers were Dave Matthews, Mark Matthews, Michael Hart, Richard Kennedy Jr., George Bates Jr. and Daniel Henry.

SANFORD- Funeral for Juanita L. Wicker Thomas, 94, of 954 Dixie Farm Road, who died Wednesday (5/21/03), was held Friday at Holly Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Parsons. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Lynne Green and Cynthia Spivey sang. The congregation sang.
Pallbearers were Phil Ray Patterson, Sherwood Thomas, Jimmy McNeill, Lemar McNeill, Sammy Womack and Joey Shue.

BROADWAY - Funeral for Gerald Patterson, 64, of Broadway, who died Monday (5/19/03), was held Thursday at Holly Springs Baptist Church, Broadway, by the Rev. Jerry Parsons. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

BEAR CREEK - Lacy Johnson Campbell, 92, of 2075 Campbell Road, died Tuesday (10/7/03) at Sun Bridge Care Facilities in Siler City.
A native of Chatham County, she was a homemaker, a member of Antioch Christian Church where she was treasurer of the Cemetery Fund, Sunday School teacher and Ladies Aide Society.
Funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Antioch Christian Church by the Rev. Warren Brown. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
She is survived by daughters, Isabelle C. Sirls of Bear Creek and Linda C. Murray of Greensboro; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home in Siler City and other times at the home of Johnny Sirls, 1827 Meronies Church Road, Bear Creek.

VASS - Helen M. Howell, 93, of 156 Sand Road, died Tuesday (10/7/03) at home.
A native of Stone Harbor, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Otto and Rose M. Wunder. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Graydon A. Howell.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Fry & Prickett Funeral Home in Carthage. Burial will follow in Pinelawn Cemetery in Southern Pines.
She is survived by a daughter, Donna Russell of Vass; son, Phillip F. Howell of Columbus, Miss.; a sister, Ruby Pfitzemaier of Miami, Fla.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
