LAWNDALE - Jessie McClure Johnson, 87, of 203 Creekwood Road, died Jan. 7, 2003. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Olive Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 tonight at Stamey Funeral Home.
Born in Catawba County, he was a member of Hudson Memorial Baptist Church and was U.S. Army WWII veteran who served in the Pacific Theater. He was also a retired Drexel Furniture Company sander and a farmer.
Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Whisnant of Lawndale; and a brother, Pearlia Johnson of Lawndale.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Millette Denean Griggs Campbell, 37, of 25 Country Club Road, died Jan. 3, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church, Lawndale. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
Born in Cleveland County, she was employed by Rehabilitation Health Care of Gastonia.
Survivors include her husband, Eric Campbell of Lawndale; a son, Tijaun Griggs of Kings Mountain; two daughters, Tijauna Griggs and Jessica Griggs of Kings Mountain; a step-daughter, Keyondia Campbell of Shelby; her mother, Deloise Corry Griggs of Cherryville; five brothers, Alan Griggs of Lincolnton, Tony Griggs, Terry Corry, David Corry and Jack Corry, all of Cherryville; two sisters, Shona Corry of Newton and Payton Griggs of Cherryville.

Born in Gaston County, he was the retired minister of Roseland Baptist Church and was a WWII Army Veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Hoyle; a son, Terry Lee Hoyle of Lincolnton; a daughter, Joan H. Cook of Lincolnton; a sister, Edna H. Smith of Tucson, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

MAIDEN - Jo Ann Wilson, 67, formerly of 3071 Water Plant Road, died Jan. 8, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at St. Martins Lutheran Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in St. James Lutheran Church in Newton.
She was retired from the textile industry.
Survivors include two brothers, Fred Wilson of Maiden and Milton Wilson of Monroe.

NEWARK, N.J. - Estella Allison Camp, 78, of 422 Fabyan Place, died Jan. 5, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C. where she was a member. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns in Shelby. Born in Shelby, N.C. she was employed by the Hudson Tool and Die Company for 16 years, retiring in 1987.
Survivors include her husband, Dock Camp; two sons, Rabb Muhammad (Wanee) and Sidney Camp, both of Newark; two sisters, Mary Ruth Martin and Laura Williamson, both of Shelby, N.C.; a brother, James Edward Allison of Watkins Glen, N.Y.; one grandchild, Sharrod Arrington of Newark; and two great-grandchildren.

CHERRYVILLE - Jack Durell Clayton, 74, of 1006 Ranbar St., died Jan. 7, 2003. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Albertville, Ala., he was a WWII U.S. Navy veteran and a member of First Baptist Church, Cherryville. He was retired from Whitin Machine Works in Charlotte after 43 years of service as a machinery installer.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene “Nig” Elliott Clayton; two sons, Jack Bradley Clayton and Stanley Clayton, both of Cherryville; and four grandchildren, Haley Clayton, Deric Clayton, Natalie Clayton and Jordy Clayton.

Born in Hiddenite, she taught school in Hiddenite for a year, then Westfield School for seven years and in 1956 moved to Catawba County Schools to teach until she retired in 1985.
Survivors include her husband, Paul N. Sowell; a son, Jerry L. Sowell of Maiden; two daughters, Joan Sowell Hart of Hickory and Deborah Sowell McCall of Gastonia; six grandchildren, Beverly Hart, Kathi Bell, Janis Sowell Hardin, Jessica McCall, Wesley McCall and Robby Sowell; and three great-grandchildren.

SHELBY - W.C. “Dub” Murray Jr., 84, of 3146 Fallston-Waco Road, died Jan. 9, 2003. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:30 at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home prior to the service.
Born in Cleveland County, he was retired from the U.S. Army Reserves and was a retired carpenter from Barrett Construction Company in Waco after 15 years. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Shelby Masonic Lodge #202, Cherryville American Legion Post #100, The Veterans Council of Shelby and the Disabled American Veterans of Shelby. He was an honorary member of the Cherryville Masonic Lodge #505 and was WWII U.S. Army retired Sgt. First Class.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hamrick Murray; and a sister, Martha Jane Lowrance of Charlotte.

Born in Caldwell County, he was the branch manager of Coble Dairy for 33 years before retiring and was a WWII Navy veteran.

Janey of Collinsville, Va.; five sisters, Vertie F. Austin and Ruth F. Nelson, both of Lenoir, Ann F. Pennell of Thomasville, Ada F. Wortman of Morganton and Jean F. Hollar of High Point; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
John Swindall
CHERRYVILLE - John H. Swindall, 71, of 112 Doree Lane, Crouse, died Jan. 8, 2003. A private memorial service will be held Saturday at St. Dorothy’s Catholic Church, Lincolnton.
Born in Wise, Va., he was employed in governmental management positions in several states and retired as City Manager of Cherryville in 1981. He was a Korean War U.S. Air Force veteran, attached to the 7th Infantry Division, a member of the Big Stone Gap V.F.W. Post #5715, was active in the Boy Scouts of America as a youth and achieved Life Scout rank. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and a Kentucky Colonel and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Big Stone Gap, Va.
Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Michele Dover of Cherryville and Joanna Rose Presson of Huntersville; two grandchildren, Cortney Elizabeth Dover and Hannah Ashlyn Rose Presson; and two sisters, Peggy Reed of Winter Haven, Fla., and Shirley Hubbard of Norton, Va. She was retired from the Carlton Yarn Mill.
