FRANKLIN — Grayson Reeves Hall, 16, died Aug. 13, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Franklin. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Macon Funeral Home.
He was born in Asheville.
Survivors include his parents, David Wade and Karen Marie Hall; a brother, Barry Wade Hall of Charlotte; and his grandmother, Martha Ballger Chrisman.
Ruby Goode
CHERRYVILLE — Ruby Owens Goode, 89, of 126 Paul Beam Road, formerly of Lincolnton, died Aug. 14, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 until 2:30 prior to the service.
Born in Rutherford County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include three sons, Joe Goode of Albemarle, Jim Goode of Vale, and Bob Goode of Cherryville; a daughter, Sally Lackey of Cherryville; three sisters, Willie Harrill of Hendersonville, Polly Cole of Forest City, and Nadine Carpenter of Hickory; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Bobby Bumgarner
MAIDEN — Bobby Costner Bumgarner, 62, of 2285 Hendrix Road, died Aug. 14, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. today in the chapel at Burke Mortuary. Burial will follow in South River Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a U.S. Army veteran, and worked in the furniture industry until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Vickie H. Bumgarner; three sons, Chad Bumgarner and Bobby Bumgarner, both of Maiden, and Terry Bumgarner of Claremont; two daughters, Tina Kelly of Maiden and Lisa Huffstetler of Raleigh; his mother, Edythe A. Bumgarner of Lincolnton; three brothers, Keith Bumgarner, Allen Bumgarner, and Boyce Bumgarner, all of Lincolnton; a sister, Patricia Bumgarner of Lincolnton; and seven grandchildren.

NEWTON — Cora Elizabeth “Sissy” Hester, 62, of 707 Mt. Olive Church Road, Apt. 3, died Aug. 14, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Carpenter’s Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to and after the service.
Born in Gaston County, she worked for Sweettree Mfg. of Cherryville until retirement.
Survivors include a sister, Pamela Hester of Newton; one grandchild, Danya Moody; and two step-great-grandchildren, Brandon Moody and Shawn Moody.
Sally Helms
CHERRYVILLE — Sally Huffman Helms, 85, of 3392 Highway 274, died Aug. 14, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a retired inspector for Vision Hosiery of Belmont.

Jack Garner
‘Focus’ on students remembered
Five months after resigning from the Lincoln County School Board, Jack Garner has died. He was 67.
Garner, who represented Lincolnton Township outside the city limits, resigned in late March, citing health problems.
Garner’s contribution to the students of Lincoln County was valued, Lincoln Schools Board Chairwoman Jean Dellinger said this morning.
“Jack told me a number of times that his reason for being on the school board was to help children and that was his main focus,” said Dellinger. “He wanted to work with others to help the children of Lincoln County.”
Elected in 1998, Garner would have completed his first four year term on the board in November. In 1997, Garner retired from Lincoln County Schools Maintenance Department where he had been employed since 1978.
Garner, who lived at 1347 Wilma Sigmon Road, died Saturday, Aug. 17, at Lincoln Medical Center.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Warlick Funeral Home.
In addition to his employment with Lincoln Schools and service on the school board, he was a member of the Lincolnton Lions Club, and the Lincoln County Sportsman Club. He was born in Lincoln County.
Survivors include two sons, Rick Garner and Tim Garner, both of Lincolnton; three brothers, Max Garner, Larry Garner, and Bill Garner, all of Lincolnton; and two grandchildren, John Garner and Callie Garner.

Thomas Patterson
CHERRYVILLE — Thomas B. Patterson, 56, of 733 Old Post Road, died Aug. 15, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Zion Hill Baptist Church cemetery.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church and the Yuletide Club. He organized the John Chavis Alumni in which he was president, and was employed with Eastern Airlines in reservations for 19 years. He also worked for Freightliner.
Survivors include his wife, Betty H. Patterson; two daughters, Marian Hopper of Statesville, Ga. and Stephanie Williams of Durham; and four grandchildren, Cheyenne B. Hopper, Desmond O’Brian Hopper, Chelsea Hopper, and Miles Williams.

Howard King
FOREST CITY — Howard Lester King, 75, of #6 Freeman Road, died Aug. 18, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Crowe Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a member of Crestview Baptist Church, and served during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He worked in the textile industry until retirement.
Survivors include two sons, Robert King of Rutherfordton and Ronnie King Sr. of Bostic; a brother, Dock King of Forest City; two sisters, Ann Lovelace of Spindale and Pauline Lovelace of Bostic; three grandchildren, Chris King, Ronnie King Jr. and Mandy King; and his companion, Penny Francis.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and worked in the textile industry.

She was formerly employed as the secretary of the N.C. Symphony.
