Joseph Bernard “Jay” Bethancourt, 78, of 228 East Congress Street, died Sept. 1, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at All Faiths Funeral Home on Canal Blvd. in New Orleans, La.
Survivors include his wife, Miriam “Mimi” Bethancourt; two sons, Clark Bethancourt of Denver, Colo. and Chuck Bethancourt of Vale; two daughters, Cynthia Doll and Karen Michaels, both of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; one brother, Jimmy Bethancourt of New Orleans, La.; two sisters, Betty Kuracar and Catherine Faucheaux, both of New Orleans, La.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

SHERRILLS FORD — Cloy Lee “C.L.” Howard Jr., 66, of 4184 Mount Pleasant Church road, died Sept. 2, 2002. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. today in Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at the church following the service.
Born in Catawba County, he was the owner of Howard Plumbing & Heating, Inc., and a member of Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Joy Connor Howard; a daughter, Patti Howard Mendiola; a son, Rusty Howard; six grandchildren, Shawn Lineberger, Zack Howard, Matthew Mendiola, Amy Young, Cassidy Howard, and Brittany Mendiola; and three great-grandchildren.

Born in Lincoln County, she was employed with Delta Apparel for 26 years.

NEWTON — Donald A. Chapman, 50, of 1626 Shuford Road, died Sept. 3, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church where he was a member. Born in Cleveland County, he was employed by Shuford Farms and Geymont Company. He also worked in furniture manufacturing.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Lail Chapman; a son, Lee Chapman of Newton, one daughter, Donna Shannon of Gastonia; a step-son, James Cody of Shelby; seven brothers, Evoid Chapman of Marshall, Ira Chapman and Claude Chapman, both of Lincolnton, and Charles Chapman, Junior Chapman, Carol Chapman and Grady Chapman, all of Newton; five sisters, Selma Moore of Lawndale, Vangie Grigg and Marlene Newhouse, both of Newton, Ruth Whisnant of Vale, and Madelene Dellinger of Clarksville, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Amber Shannon and Johnathan Dellinger.

Born in Belmont, he was an Air National Guard, U.S. Army, Korean Conflict veteran. At church he was involved with the adult Sunday school class, served as former Deacon, and chair on the Deacon and Elder Boards.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Marie Holcomb Abernathy; and two sisters, Dalphia Abernathy Carr of Gastonia and Ruth Lucille A. Tevepaugh of Bessemer City.

DALLAS — Robert “Bob” Ashmore Sowell, 85, of 209 Robinson-Clemmer Road, died Sept. 1, 2002. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service.
Born in Kershaw, S.C., he was a U.S. Navy veteran who served aboard the U.S.S. Pegasus for nine years, and was employed with Nolen Concrete Supply until retirement after 28 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Inez Johnson Sowell; two sons, Jim Sowell of Conover and Bill Sowell of Frisco; a daughter, Martha Sowell Keziah of Lincolnton; a sister, Frances Beauchamp of Dallas; six grandchildren, Angie Rudisill, Samantha Keziah, Josh Keziah, Megan Keziah, John Hart, and Wayne Hart; and three great-grandchildren.

DALLAS — William “Bill” Evan Bivens, 35, of Garrett Circle, died Aug. 19, 2002. A private graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today in City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville.
Born in Cleveland County, he was self-employed as a certified industrial electrician.

Harry Harbinson Sr.
MAIDEN — Harry Lee Harbinson Sr., 87, of 508 West School Street, died Sept. 4, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Martins Lutheran Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in Maiden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church two hours prior to the service.
Born in Catawba County, he was a retired maintenance supervisor with General Electric Corp. of Hickory. A member of the Maiden Town Council for 13 years, he held the position of office of the chairman of the Church Council, and taught Sunday School. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp., WWII veteran, serving in the China-Burma-India campaign, and was an administrative officer for 40 years with R.A.C.E.S. of Catawba County.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Hinkle Harbinson; two sons, Harry L. Harbinson Jr. and Danny W. Harbinson, both of Maiden; one daughter, Kathy Harbinson Smith of Raleigh; four sisters, Pauline Irby of Athens, Ga., Thelma Harbinson and Leta Michael, both of Maiden, and Meriam Woody of Gastonia; two brothers, Jerry G. Harbinson of Maiden and Rev. James A. “J.A.” Harbinson of Charlotte; and two grandchildren.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a retired car salesman and a U.S. Army, WWII veteran, serving in the Army 25th Field Artillery.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Blanton Ramsaur; a son, Louie Ramsaur of Shelby; two brothers, Eddie E. Ramsaur of Shelby and Billy C. Ramsaur of Lincolnton; a sister, Katherine Smith of Boger City; three grandchildren, Necole Richard, Morris Elliott, and Sam Ramsaur; and three great-grandchildren.

GASTONIA — Joan Marie Bell, 69, of Belaire Health Care Center, formerly of 2900 Union Road, died Aug. 28, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at First United Methodist Church where she was a member. Burial will be private.
Born in Addison County, Vermont, she was a life long member of the United Methodist Church in Plymouth, N.Y., and worked as a property manager until retirement.
