RAEFORD - Pearl Evelyn McDougald Epps, 74, of 804 Southern Avenue, died Sept. 4, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Red Springs. Burial will follow in Alloway Cemetery. The family will receive tonight from 7 until 9 at Crumpler Funeral Home.
Born in Montgomery County, she was employed with Burlington until retirement.
Survivors include two sons, Robert L. “Butch” McDougald of Red Springs and Steve A. McDougald of Vale; seven brothers, Ralph Bowles of Pacheco, Ca.lif., Leroy Bowles of Palo Alto, California, Jessie Bowles Jr. of Mt. Gilead, Jimmy Bowles and Lane Bowles, both of Norwood, and Marvin Bowles of Biscoe; four sisters, Linda Lee and Frances Sasser, both of Norwood, Judy Maness of Robbins, Betty Beane of Monroe; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Hattie Beam
CHERRYVILLE – Hattie Turner Beam, 98, of 1308 Delview Road, died Sept. 6, 2002. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a member of First United Methodist Church, and was employed for 48 years with Dora Yarn Mills until retirement.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Beam Hamrick of the home; a son, T.L. Beam of Vale; eight grandchildren, Denise Jenks, Tim Beam, Bill C. Beam, Zelda Lovelace, Alete Watts, Teresa Powell, Gary Dodson, and Beverly Hamrick; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 601 N. Pink St., Cherryville, N.C.; or Mt. Zion Baptist Church, P.O. Box 579, Cherryville, N.C.; or Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby, N.C. 28150.

James Rankin Jr.
LOWESVILLE – James “Jay” Lawrence Rankin Jr., 81, died Sept. 5, 2002. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Alexis, where he was a member. Interment followed in Glenwood Cemetery in Mooresville.
Born in Gaston County, he was a U.S. Army WWII veteran and was employed with Wachovia Bank until retirement. Following retirement, he worked with Lowe’s Home Improvement.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Neel Rankin; three step-sons, Glenn Callaway of Dallas, Paul Callaway of Mooresville, and Jimmy Sifford of Winston Salem; a sister, Ruth Bjerki of Charlotte; seven step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 N. Cedar St., Lincolnton, N.C. 28092; or Mt. Zion Baptist Church, P.O. Box 70, Alexis, N.C. 28006.

Mary Elliott
POLKVILLE – Mary Ella McMurry Elliott, 89, of 4411 Polkville Road, died Sept. 7, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Polkville United Methodist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the Elliott Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall one hour prior to the service.
Born in Cleveland County, she was employed with Dover Mill Co. until retirement.
Survivors include a son, Eddie Elliott of Polkville; a daughter, Anne Hare of Shelby; one brother, James McMurry of Polkville; a sister, Thelma Jenkins of Charlotte; five grandchildren, Necole Richard, Angie Gates, Tanya Davis, Morris Elliott, and Benjy Hare; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Dr., Shelby, N.C. 28150.

John Harrelson
CHERRYVILLE – John Vance Harrelson, 70 of 1656 Delview Road, died Sept. 7, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 8 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home.
Born in Gaston County, he was a U.S. Air Force, Korean veteran, and a member of American Legion Post #100. He was employed as a long line driver with Carolina Freight and Eaker Motor Lines until retirement.
Survivors include his two daughters, Crystal Alberson of Gastonia, and Jonna Doyle of Kernersville; two brothers, Ray Harrelson of Mt. Holly, and Charles Harrelson of Long Shoals; his companion, Jean Crumpton; three adopted children; five grandchildren, John Carpenter, Claire Alberson, Vance Doyle, Benjamin Doyle, and Michael Doyle; 10 adopted grandchildren; and two adopted great-grandchildren.

Cecil Wise
VALE – Cecil Wise, 90, of 385 Howard’s Creek Mill Road, died Sept. 6, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was employed as a supervisor for Rhyne Mills of Lincolnton, and worked for a number of years at H & F Grocery. He was also a charter member of the Howard’s Creek Fire Department.
Survivors include three sons, James Wise and Kenneth Wise, both of Crouse and Dr. Bob Wise of Vale; a daughter, Cecelia Denton of Eugene, Ore.; a sister, Ollie Mae McConnell of Lincolnton; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 2069 Hwy. 182, Lincolnton, N.C. 28092.

Mattie Joanne Lattimore Evans, 61, of 1573 Kilborne Drive, died Sept. 8, 2002.

Marie Greene
RUTHERFORDTON – Marie Thomas Greene, 80, of 280 Arnette Street, died Sept. 7, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Southern Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Born in Whiteville, N.C., she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis Greene; two sons, Charles Greene of Lincolnton, and Michael Greene of Gastonia; three sisters, Evelyn Griffin of Griffin, Ga., and Grace Johnson and Francis McMahan, both of Spindale; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Donald Vernon
CONCORD - Donald “Donnie” Vernon, 23, of 5619 Gold Hill Road, died Sept. 7, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Homeland Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7 until 9 at the church.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a recent graduate of Catawba College where he played football for four years. He was the recreational leader for Salisbury Parks and Recreation, and was involved with “Athletes 4 Children.”
Survivors include his wife, Kristie Hoffman Vernon; a son, Jadon Lee Vernon of Concord; his mother, Tammie Hull Vernon; and grandparents, Warren Ray and Muriel Hull of Vale.

James Little Sr.
SANFORD – James Conrad Little Sr., 90, died Sept. 7, 2002. A funeral service will be held at Cool Springs Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
He was born in Lincoln County.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Burham Little; two sons, James Conrad Little Jr., and Douglas J. Little; one brother, Charles S. Little Sr. of Lincolnton; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Sara Roof
Sara Elizabeth Roof, 91, of the Brian Center, formerly of 704 South Cedar Street, died Sept. 6, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Daniel’s Lutheran Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Born in Blountville, Tenn., she was a teacher for the Lincoln County School System, and served as principal at the old Lincoln Grammar School until retirement. She was the former President of the Lincolnton-Lincoln County Chapter of North Carolina Retired School Personnel, and a member of the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, serving as treasurer for 20 years. She chaired the school system committee for the initial elementary accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and took an active part in many leadership roles at her church.
Survivors include a sister, Martha Price Sidbury of Charlotte.
Memorials may be made to Daniel’s Lutheran Church, 3290 Reepsville Rd., Lincolnton, N.C. 28092; or the Roof Mission Fund, c/o Daniel’s Lutheran Church.

Reginald Perkins
PINEVILLE - Reginald “Reggie” H. Perkins, 58, formerly of Denver, died Sept. 11, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Pineville Church of the Nazarene. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 until 3 prior to the service.
He was born in Newton.
Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Perkins; four sons, Richard Perkins, Nicholas Perkins, Christopher Perkins, and Matthew Perkins; two sisters, Barbara Gabriel of Sherrills Ford and Brenda Douthit of Denver; and five grandchildren.
Carolina Funeral & Cremation Center of Charlotte is in charge of arrangements.

Ellison Harrison
CHAPEL HILL - Ellison Jr. Harrsion, 54, of 302 B Hickory Forest Road, died Sept. 9, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel at Ebony & White’s Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service.
Born in Forsyth County, he served in the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart. He was employed with Duke Power as a customer service representative, was a trainer for Bell Lab, and taught for nine years at the National Education Center.
Survivors include his wife, Menasha Morrow Fernanders of Atlanta, Ga.; one son, El-Haaj Fernanders of the home; three daughters, Elena Fernanders and Marium Fernanders, both of the home, and Karema Harrison of Atlanta, Ga.; his mother, Lena H. Harris of Lincolnton; one brother, Edward Fernanders of Plainfield , N.J.; a sister, Leandra Shropshire of Lowell; and one grandchild, Malaki Harrison.
