Joseph Alden Mullen, 95, of N. Oak St., died Oct. 12, 2001. A graveside service was held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Hollybrook Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and operated Mullen’s General Mercantile until his retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Sally Mullen Fox of Hickory, and Betsy Mullen Stone of New York.; one brother, Lester Mullen of Lincolnton; and two grandsons, William Joseph Mullen Fox, and Addison Cook Fox.

VALE — John Robert Dolan, 58, of 7129 Ed. Willis Rd., died Oct. 12, 2001. A funeral service was held Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel.
Born in Sussex Co., N. J., he was employed with Clayton Marcus as a fabric scanner.
Survivors include his wife, Leah Holburn Dolan; three daughters, Shannon Grant of Lincolnton, Tara Reynolds, and Tiffany Allen of Vale; four sisters, Nellie Rogers of Vermont, and Pat Dolan, Barbara Day, and Mary Dolan, all of Sussex, N.J.; one brother, Herbert Dolan of Massachusetts; and five grandchildren, Katelin Grant, Nicholas Grant, Christopher Reynolds Jr., Jolene Reynolds, and Katrina Allen.
Sidney Thompson
DALLAS — Sidney David Thompson, 51, of 1021 Alexis High Shoals Rd., died Oct. 10, 2001. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Ebony & White’s Funeral Service Chapel. Burial followed in Herndon Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was retired from Clark Tire.
Survivors include a son, Sidney David Thompson Jr. of Dallas; his mother, Virginia S. Thompson of the home; two brothers, Robert Thompson of York, Pa., and Melvin Thompson of the home; four sisters, Connie Turner, and Darlene Thompson, both of Gastonia, Ruby Henry of Brentwood, Md., and Cathy Thompson of Dallas; and four grandchildren.
Everette Dellinger
DENVER — Everette Lee Dellinger, 65, of 6971 Executive Circle, died Oct. 11, 2001. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville.
Born in Cherryville, he worked for McMurray Fabric and Belbert Knits until his retirement.
Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Benfield of Maiden.

Pervie Wentz
MAIDEN — Pervie James Wentz, 70, of 1360 Zeb Haynes Rd., died Oct. 11, 2001. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Burke Mortuaries Chapel. Burial followed in Lawings Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a U.S. veteran who served during the Korean Conflict, and a retired truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn Duncan Wentz; two sons, Rick Wentz, and Kirk Wentz, both of Newton; one daughter, Julie Gibson of Maiden; and six grandchildren.

Elza Phipps
MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Elza Gene Phipps, 68, of Friendshipville, died Oct. 10, 2001. A funeral service was held at 8 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home Magnolia Chapel. Burial followed on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Sherwood Memorial Gardens.
A member of the Mason Lodge #5 F.&AM; in Columbus, Miss. and was retired from the U.S. Air Force with 20 years service, having served during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam.
Survivors include three daughters, Judy Hurst of Clarksville, Tenn., Susie Cagle of Decatur, Ala., and Diane Woody of Morristown, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Doug Hurst, Bradley Hurst, George William Cagle, Crystal Cagle, Michelle Woody, and Allison Woody.
John Havelka
John Eugene Havelka, 85, of 873 Coolwood Rd., died Oct. 13, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during WWII.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Havelka; one son, John E. Havelka of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; one daughter, Joanna Smith of New York; one sister, Ruth Carroll of New York; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

SHELBY — Barbara Jane Jeffries Miller, 63, of 2603 Shoals Creek Church Rd., died Oct. 12, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Shoal Creek Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service.
She was born in Cleveland County.

Born in Gaston County, she was retired from Burris Industries.

Born in Rock Hill, S.C., he worked for Daniels Construction and Burlington Mills as a millwright, until his retirement.
Survivors include two sons, Lacy L. Brooks Jr. of Laurinburg and Arthur G. Brooks of La Jolla, Calif.; three daughters, Edna B. Rigby of Pensacola, Fla., Georgia B. Watts and Gearldine Stephens, both of Laurinburg; one brother, Carmel Brooks of Spring Hill, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Bill Robinson
GASTONIA — Thomas William “Bill” Robinson Sr., 82, of 702 Robinson-Clemmer Rd., died Oct. 14, 2001. A private graveside service was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Long Creek Cemetery.
Born in Gaston County, he was a veteran Air Force who served in WWII. A member of Dallas Baptist Church, he worked for Wix Corp. for 15 years and was a carpenter until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Billie Hovis Robinson; one son, Thomas William “Tommy” Robinson Jr. of Gastonia; one sister, Mary Garrison of Rock Hill, S.C.; three grandchildren, Meredith Hager and Dee Hager, both of Stanley, and Matthew Robinson of Gastonia; and one great-grandchild.

Josephine Newton Eggers, 94, of 113 Zeb Hull Ln., died Oct. 14, 2001. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in Goodin-Drum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8 at the funeral home.
Born in Cherokee County, she was a member of James Street Freewill Baptist Church, and worked as an inspector for Newton Hosiery Mills.
Survivors include two sons, William “Bill” Clifton Eggers Jr. of Maiden and Claughton Eugene Eggers of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one daughter, Louise E. Groves of Gastonia; one brother, Rosie Newton of Sherrills Ford; two sisters, Cordie Griggs of Marble and Lela Roberts of Lenoir; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren.

Fredrick Winthrop Beebe, 80, of 3420 Hwy. 27 East, died Oct. 16, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends any time at the home.
Born in New London County, Conn., he was a veteran of WWII, and worked as a construction manager for Ebasco Services.
