CHERRYVILLE — James Robert Beam, 71, of 408 North Mountain St., died Oct. 2, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today at First Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was employed as a district sales manager for Carolina Freight Carriers of Cherryville for 39 years until retirement. He was active at his church, serving as Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and a member of the building committee.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Beam; one son, J. Norris Beam of the home; one brother, Ronald S. Beam of Cherryville; and two sisters, Joyce Beam of Fallston and Jane B. Helms of Cherryville.

HICKORY — Dorothy Dean Ross, 81, of the Brian Center East, formerly of Lake Hill Drive, Catawba, died Oct. 2, 2002. No services have been scheduled.
Born in Muhlenberg County, Ky., she was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Richard K. Rumble of Conover; one daughter, Audrey Burton of Richmond, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

CLAREMONT — Ella Mae Haire Callender, 83, of 3270 Tolley St., died Oct. 3, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Providence Road Baptist Church where she was a member. A graveside service will be Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Born in Ashe County, she was employed in the textile industry until retirement.
Survivors include two stepsons, Ed Callender of Texas and W.S. Callender of Louisiana; two daughters, Mrs. Phil “Audrey” Harmon of Lenoir and Kay Williams of Claremont; two brothers, Gene Haire of West Jefferson and Carroll Haire of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Lloyd “Irene” Isaac of Lincolnton and Helen Blackburn of West Jefferson; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Jake Clyde Johnson, 79, of 1643 Startown Road, died Oct. 4, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday night from 6:30 until 8:30 at Warlick Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, he was self-employed as a contractor.

Carles Wellman
MORGANTON — Carles Michael “Mike” Wellman, 49, of Willow Drive, the Salem Community, died Oct. 5, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Tuesday night at Sossoman Funeral Home from 6 until 8:30.
Born in Cleveland County, he was founder and co-owner of Town and County Tire of Mountain View, Hickory, Taylorsville, and Morganton. He served as Sunday school teacher for his church, and was a committee member, R.A. leader, and choir member.
Survivors include his wife, Rachel Shook Wellman; one son, Jeff Wellman of Morganton; a daughter, Kimberly Wellman of Morganton, his mother and step-father, Verlie Denton Deaton and Bill Deaton of Morganton; a sister, Bettye Baird of Morganton; and four grandchildren, Taylor Lane, Blake Wellman, Anna Tallant, and Alec Wellman.

Born in Sanford, she was the owner and operator of Main Street Market Place, and was a license real estate broker.
Survivors include her husband, Donald Eugene Oglesby; one son, Tony Wendell of Stafford, Va.; one daughter, Debra Lynn Cash of Fuquay-Varina; one stepson, Travis John Oglesby of Los Angles, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Michelle Gibson of Rockwood, Tenn.; two brothers, Walter Barnes of Warsaw, N.J. and C. George Barnes of Penscola, Fla.; one sister, Rose Byrd of Charlotte; and two grandchildren, Kylie Cash and Bradley Cash.

CHERRYVILLE — J.R. Campbell, 79, of 1008 Trey Street, died Oct. 4, 2002. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. today in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a U.S. Army, WWII veteran, a member of First Baptist Church of Cherryville, and the Woodmen of the World, Lodge 579. Formerly employed with Carolina Freight Carriers, he worked as a warehouse foreman for 21 years, and retired as a security guard with Guardmark of Charlotte.
Survivors include his wife, Vergie Hannon Campbell; a son, J. Rick Campbell Jr. of Cherryville; three daughters, Joan Gaulden of Greenville, S.C., Marilyn Temples of Clemmons, and Christine McCall of Cherryville; two brothers, John E. Campbell of Cherryville and Emanuel Campbell of Shelby; six sisters, Wilma Davidson, Frances Hord and Pinkie Sanders, all of Cherryville, Sue Sneed and Catherine Mull, both of Waco, and Louise Adams of Bessemer City; six grandchildren, Rich Campbell, Ali Beale, Trey McCall, Dean Lake, Hunt Gaulden, and Margaret Gaulden; and one great-grandchild.

Born in Lincoln County, he was employed as a supervisor for Leaksville Woolen Mill of Charlotte until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Potter Williams; three sons, Jim Williams of Concord, Glenn Williams Jr. of Charlotte, and Reggie Williams of Sherrills Ford; one daughter, Nancy Wenderlein of Charlotte; one sister, Christine Honeycutt of Oakboro; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Joan Kerley McCurry, 54, of 123 Lee McCurry Road, died Oct. 3, 2002. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Golden Valley United Methodist Church Cemetery of Rutherford County.
Born in Mecklenburg County, she was a member of Webbs Chapel Baptist Church, and gospel singer with the Tommy Fale Show, and later the Gospel Envoys.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Eddie Joe McCurry; one son, Joey McCurry of Gastonia; her father, W.E. Kerley of Charlotte; and one grandchild, Chasdity Ragland.

NEWTON — Evelyn Inez Moose, 80, of 610 West 7th St., died Oct. 5, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial followed in Eastview Cemetery.
Born in Catawba County, she was employed with the Catawba County Department of Social Services for 32 years until retirement. She was also a member of the “Little People of America.”
Survivors include three sisters, Rosemary Jones of Catawba, Rebecca Hatchett of Newton, and Dorcas Moose of California; and two brothers, Demps Moose of Conover, and Brady Moose of Hickory.

Survivors include his wife, Vangie Ella Willis Costner; four sons, Kenny Costner of Casar, Gerald Costner, Jimmy Costner, and Gary Costner, all of Lawndale; two daughters, Rita Smith of Casar and Norma Lutz of Cherryville; two sisters, Florence Huffman of Cherryville and Martha Mellon of Shelby; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Harold Holden
STANLEY — Harold Holden, 72, of Sherrill Drive, died Oct. 4, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Born in Catheys Creek, N.C., he was a U.S. Army veteran who served in the Korean War and earned a Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Stars, a UN Service Medal and a Korean Service Medal. He worked as an operator for Sandoz Chemicals.
Survivors include wife, Jenna Sue Holden; two daughters, Pamela Kay Hill of Alexis and Karen Louise Taylor of Stanley; one son, Jeffrey Dale Holden of Stanley; one brother, J.B Holden of Rosman; two sister, Annie Bell of Winlock, Wash. and Lois Pressley of Rosman; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
