Born in Lincoln County, he was employed in sales with Pet Dairies of Greensboro.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Maloyed Shrum; a son, Karlton Shrum of Lancaster, S.C.; a sister, Glenda Smith of Waxhaw; and three grandchildren, Jordan Shrum, Josiah Shrum, and Joel Shrum.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a U.S. Army WWII veteran and farmed after retiring from his work at Duke Power.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Mauney Graham; two daughters, Judy G. Miller of Stanley, and Shelia G. Howard of Denver; one brother, J.D. Graham of Denver; one sister, Kathryn G. Black of Charlotte; and three grandchildren, Wesley Howard, Randy Howard, and Brent Miller.

NEWTON - Louise Elrod Grogan, 76, of 2196 “B” Sigmon Dairy Road, died Oct. 19, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11:30 a.m. today at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hickory. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
She was employed as a security guard with Griffith Security until retirement.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Elrod of Claremont; three brothers, Otis Elrod Jr. of Lake Norman, Franklin Matthews, and Jessie Matthews, both of Hickory; two sisters, Mattie Sue Mitchell of Newton, and Dorothy McGraw of Granite Falls; two grandchildren, Joseph P. Born in Lincoln County, she was employed in housekeeping at Mohican Mills until retirement. At her church she served as a deaconess and treasurer, was a missionary and sang in the church choir.
Survivors include three sons, Alphonso “Joe” Friday, and Dewey Friday, both of Lincolnton, and Larry Friday of Denver; one daughter, Jacqueline Diane Williams of Dallas; 20 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
Leon Smith
SHELBY - Leon Smith, 95, died Oct. 18, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Saint Luke FPH Church in Forest City, where he was a member. Burial will follow at Stooping Pine Methodist Church in Smyrna, S.C. The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 6:30 until 8 at the church.
Born in York County, S.C., he was employed with Southern Railroad until retirement, and was a member of the Tryon Masonic Lodge #8.

CHERRYVILLE - Fannie Belle Turner Ledford, 79, of 300 Roy Eaker Road, died Oct. 20, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church where she was a member. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Cleveland County, she was an office manager for the Cleveland County Fair Association for 34 years until retirement. At her church she was active in the Adult Fellowship Sunday School, Chancel Choir, Lola Allran Circle, and was the former director of the Hand Bell and Children’s choirs. She was also a member of the Cherryville Music Club, the Cherryville Little Theatre, and was named Cherryville Charity League Woman of the Year.
Survivors include her husband C.D. Ledford; two daughters, Rhonda L. Wehunt, and Crystal L. Thornburg, both of Cherryville; one brother, James Turner of Belwood; one sister, Vangie Turner of Cherryville; and five grandchildren, Amy Wehunt, Travis Wehunt, Justin Thornburg, Ryan Thornburg, and Leslie Thornburg.
