CHERRYVILLE - Jana Byers Ross, 81, of Gastonia Village, formerly of Marion, died Oct. 20, 2002. A graveside service was held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, S.C.
Born in Spartanburg, S.C., she was a member of First Baptist Church of Marion and a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, Michael Ross of Cherryville; one brother, Billy Joe Byers of Spartanburg, S.C.; and one grandchild, Michael Ross Jr.

Katherine Link Mullen, 100, of the Lincoln Nursing Center, formerly of 2001 East Main Street, died Oct. 22, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Boger City Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Born in Lincoln County, she was employed in the Asbury School cafeteria for 30 years until retirement.
Survivors include one son, Neil C. Mullen of Lincolnton; two daughters, Esther Cashion of Falls Church, Va., and Clafton Hinkle of Simpsonville, S.C.; two sisters, Polly Hoyle of Lincolnton, and Sue Sherrill of Iron Station; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Roy Nixon
LOWESVILLE - Roy Monroe Nixon, 84, of 1550 South Highway 16, died Oct. 23, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Salem United Methodist Church where he was a member. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a U.S. Army, WWII veteran, serving in Germany and Luxemburg. He was a retired office manager from McClure Lumber Company.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah McIntosh Nixon; a son, Clifton “Cliff” Nixon of Durham; three daughters, Susan Kuenzel of Wilbar, Kathy Sparrow of Hillsborough, and Miriam Nixon of Concord; and seven grandchildren, Will Kuenzel, Codie Kuenzel, Betsy Nixon, Sarah Nixon, Bart Nixon, Merilee Nixon, and Juliana Nixon.

BELMONT - Mamie Parris Woods, 86, of 600 East Henry Street Lot 39, died Oct. 21, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Colonial Chapter of Carothers Funeral Home. A graveside service was also held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Holy Springs Baptist Church cemetery.
Born in Sylva, she was employed with Climax Mills in Belmont, and worked for American-Efird until retirement. She was of Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Woods of Lincolnton; two daughters, Juan Price and Helen Warren, both of Belmont; two brothers, Ray Parris and Ronnie Parris, both of Sylva; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Born in Bedford County, Pa., he was a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran, was formerly employed as head laboratory technician at Crowell Hospital, and worked for G.E. Safety and Fire Protection until retirement. A former member of the VFW and the American Legion, he served as district Chairman of Advancement in Picayne, Miss.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Weaver Fletcher; one son, Billy Fletcher of Killeen, Michigan, and Betty Suptin of Maryland; and three grandchildren, Nicholas Brandon, Hannah Louise, and CarterLeigh.
