Lillie Hollar Yates Wilkes
Mrs. Lillie Hollar Yates Wilkes, 83, of Stanley died Wednesday March 8, 2006 at her residence following a long illness due to cancer.
Born May 1, 1922 in Statesville, she was a daughter of the late David S. and Mary White Hollar. She attended college at night from 1959 to 1976 at the University of Maryland, College Park Maryland and the Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond Va., receiving her BS degree in accounting in 1976. In 1977 she retired from her job as a systems accountant at the Federal Logistics Agency in Alexandria, Va.
Funeral services were conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11 at Salem United Methodist Church with Rev. Jan Heermans officiating. Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville.
Survivors are her grandchildren, Katherine Yates Gadway and husband Jeffrey of Springfield, Va. and David Stephen Yates, Jr. and wife Megan of Stanley; six great grandchildren, daughter-in-law, Nancy Yates of Mechanicsville, Va., step-sons, Michael Bryant Wilkes and wife Barbara of Stanley and Donald Roger Wilkes and wife Marilyn of Iron Station, six step grandchildren and a very dear friend, Yvonne Stroupe of Lowell.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, David Stephen Yates, CDR USN, husbands, David Daniel Yates, James Lewis Ayers, and James Bryant Wilkes, three brothers, one sister and step-daughter, Rebecca Wilkes.

James Edwin Stephens Jr.
James (Jimmy) Edwin Stephens Jr., 43, of Denver, died March 10, 2006 as a result of injuries from a motorcycle accident.
Born March 29, 1962 in Mecklenburg County to James Edwin Stephens Sr. and Gloria Hutchinson Stephens, he was a 1980 graduate of East Lincoln High School and was selfemployed with James Stephens Plumbing Co. He attended Lucia Baptist Church, and loved to ride his Harley.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his son, Austin Watts of Monroe; daughter, Ashley R. Stephens of Stanley; sisters, Barbara S. Johnson of Clayton, Melinda S. Sharpe of Denver, and Angela Stephens of Atlanta.
Funeral services were conducted March 12 in the Raymer Funeral Home Chapel, and burial was in Mt. Zion community cemetery.

John V. Hauss
Mr. John Vernon Hauss, 78, of Drake Court in Sherrills Ford and formerly of Salem Church Road in Lincolnton died May 7, 2006 at home.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 11 at Iron Station Church of God with Rev. Scott Whitesides officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Hauss was born April 26, 1928 in Lincoln County to the late Guy E. and Jessie Keener Hauss. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Jean Weaver Hauss.
Mr. Hauss was retired from J.P. Stevens where he worked in management.
Survivors include one son, Gary D. Hauss of Lincolnton; three daughters, Theresa H. Burris of Sherrills Ford, Sandra H. Reynolds of Lincolnton and Susan H. Brown of Charleston, SC; one brother, James Hauss of Lancaster, SC; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28625. Warlick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements for the Hauss family.
Mike Spencer
Mr. Mike Spencer, age 53, of Brookdale Drive in Stanley, died unexpectedly on Monday, May 29, 2006.
Mike was born on July 7, 1952 in Kansas City, Missouri. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Bernard Spencer and Dorothy Beatrice Garrett Spencer.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Lynn Spencer; and daughters, Elizabeth, Jacqueline and Tessa. He was also fatherin-law to be to Bryan Kearse, Elizabeth’s fiancé.
Funeral services were held on June 2 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Pallbearers were Glen Atwell of Stanley; Bill Bartosch of Rochester, NY; Rick Bailey of Smithfield, VA; Verne Dickerson of Herndon, VA; Bryan Kearse, Raleigh; and Bill Torpey, Herndon, VA.
Mike graduated from the University of Texas, Arlington campus in 1974. Highlights in his career occurred with Hughes Network Systems, Germantown, MD as Information Technology Program Manager and Spencer Consulting in Charlotte.
He was a member of ELKS International, Optimists International and Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Mike will be remembered fondly by his family, friends and the “Animal Farm” for many endearing character traits and skills, which include: Deep dedication to the growth of his family with nurturing care, an ever-present, genuinely warm smile, a generous, sharing, out-going personality and always ready to lend a helping hand.
Impressive culinary skills that he capably utilized in his avocation as a gourmet cook. A constant adherence to his personal motto that influenced his daily life, “If you’re happy, I’m happy.”
Raymer Funeral Home, Huntersville, served the family.
Alberta Gretchen M. Carlson
Mrs. Alberta “Gretchen” McCullough Carlson, 83, of Denver died June 17, 2006. A memorial service was held on June 20 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel.
Mrs. Carlson was born in Tarentum, PA on October 27, 1922.
She was the daughter of the late Raymond and Mary Fox McCullough.
Survivors include her husband, Richard W. “Dick” Carlson of Denver; one son, Larry R. Carlson and wife, Joan of Charlotte; one brother, Robert F. McCullough of Hurricane, WVA; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Harris Hospice, c/o Presbyterian Hospital Foundation, PO Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28254 or to the charity of one’s choice.
Michael Alexander Hunter
Mr. Michael Alexander Hunter, 50, of Highway 73 in Iron Station died June 16, 2006 at Lincoln Medical Center.
He was born in Lincoln County on April 14, 1956, the son of Christine Friday Hunter and the late James David Hunter. He graduated from East Lincoln High and was employed by the City of Lincolnton and Lincoln Medical Center for several years and then at Cardinal Healthcare.
Funeral services are June 22 at 3 p.m. in the chapel at Ebony & White’s Funeral Service with burial to follow in St. James United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service.
Survivors include his mother Christine Friday Hunter of Charlotte; two sisters, Chasity Michelle Hunter of Charlotte and Evelyn Gibbs of Lincolnton, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Paul L. Hunter
Mr. Paul L. Hunter, 55, of Lancelot Lane in Denver died June 16 at his residence.
He was born in Lincoln County on October 25, 1950, the son of the late Johnson T. Hunter, Sr. and Wilma McCray Hunter. He graduated from East Lincoln High where he was an outstanding athlete. He was an Air Force veteran and worked at Duke Power Company for several years. He was a maintenance technician for Phillip Morris, and was an avid fisherman and golfer.
Funeral services are today (June 21) at 2 p.m. at Rock Hill United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the Gold Hill/Rock Hill cemetery.
Survivors include a son, Leonard Jermaine Smith of Sherrills Ford; four brothers, Harold Hunter and wife Ernestine, Johnson Hunter, Jr. and wife Mary Frances, Stacy Hunter and wife Gail, and Alvo Davis all of Denver; four sisters, Mary Young and husband Rudolph of Stanley; Betty Frazier and husband Herman, Geneva Tinsley, Janice Lindsey and husband Larry all of Denver.
Ebony and White Funeral Services is serving the Hunter family.
