Letha Arlee Smith
Letha Arlee Smith, age 65, of Lincolnton formerly of Iron Station, died Thursday, October 4, 2007 at the Brian Center of Lincolnton.
She was born July 22, 1942 in Lincoln Co. to the late Don Sherrill and Eva May Crouse Smith. She was an inspector at General Shoe Lace Company.
She is survived by her daughter Alice Abernethy of Iron Station; a brother Henry Sherrill of Denver; a sister Ada Smith of Newton; a sister-in-law Nellie Smith of Lincolnton; and two grandchildren, Patty and Samantha Abernethy.
Funeral services were October 7 at E. F. Drum Funeral Home chapel. The interment followed at the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Wayne Brittain officiated.
John Patrick Shanklin
John Patrick Shanklin, 61, of Charlotte died at his residence on September 26, 2007. He was born in Charlotte on September 14, 1946, the son of Walt Shanklin of Denver and the late Florence Soule Shanklin.
Pat graduated from Myers Park High School and attended NC State University and East Carolina University. He served in the U.S. Navy on the nuclear submarine U.S.S. Sea Devil. Pat worked as a professional photographer in the Charlotte area for most of his life, focusing on architectural design. Many of Pat's photographs were featured in the Charlotte Observer Home Section and cover pages of local magazines. He was also commissioned to photograph various architectural subjects in New York City and outside of the U.S.
In addition to his father, survivors include his sisters, Mary Brown and husband, Ron of Denver; Alice Greene and husband, Jimmy of Lincolnton; and Linda Elliott and husband, Rick of Alpharetta, GA; brothers, Ron Shanklin of Myrtle Beach; Robert Shanklin of Denver; Mark Shanklin and wife, Michele of Denver; and Jeff Shanklin of San Carlos, Mexico; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Dilworth United Methodist Church on Monday, October 1. Interment was at Elmwood Cemetery.

Cheryl Gentry Smith
Cheryl Gentry Smith, 61, of Belmont died September 25, 2007 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
She was born July 20, 1946 to the late Odis and Evona Gentry. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Bill and two sisters.
Survivors include five daughters, eight grandchildren two brothers and a sister, Marion Cook of Denver.
Funeral services were held at Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills with burial at Allaway Cemetery in Red Springs.
Ruth Giles Taylor
Mrs. Ruth Giles Taylor, 82, of Davis Park Road in Gastonia died October 5, 2007. A memorial service was held on October 7 at The Episcopal Church of St. Peter by the Lake. A reception followed the service. A private inurnment was held on October 8 at Gaston Memorial Park.
Mrs. Taylor was born March 25, 1925 in Cocke County, TN to the late Bruce and Ellen Carver Giles. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ray Charles Taylor.
Survivors include two sons, Reg Taylor and The Rev. Dr. Ronald B. Taylor and wife Karen of Denver; a daughter, Joy Ringelberg and husband Don of Gastonia; a brother, Haven Giles of Gastonia; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.

Grady Crouse
Grady Calvin Crouse, 78, of Lincolnton, died October 5, 2007 at his residence. He was born July 28, 1929 in Catawba County to the late Belton Pinkney Crouse and Bonnie Crouse Crouse.
He worked in maintenance at Mohican Mills and was a member of Amity Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife Clara Rhyne Crouse of the home, a daughter, Cindy Helton of Havelock, NC; a brother, Elvin Crouse of Lincolnton; four sisters, Ella Crouse of Lincolnton; Betty Shaffer of Sherrills Ford; Marie Crouse of Vale; and Vear Hubbard of Maiden; two grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
The service was held at Amity Baptist Church on October 8. Interment was at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Dr. Robert Helton officiated with Rev. Kenneth Little assisting. E. F. Drum Funeral Home served the Crouse family.
Nancy Lee Oates
Nancy Lee Oates of Mt. Vernon Road, Iron Station passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at CMC-Lincoln. She was born in Lincoln County to the late John Franklin Oates and Martha Ellis Oates. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and worked for many years with the Long Island Rail Road.
She is survived by one daughter, Elaine Oates, one brother Nathaniel Oates Sr., and one sister, Martha Oates all of Iron Station and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held October 29 in the E. F. Drum Chapel. Interment followed in the Forest Lawn Cemetery. E. F. Drum Funeral Home is serving the Oates Family.
Mary R. Black Cagle
Mary Ruth Black Cagle, age 73, of Mace Lane in Lincolnton died October 23, 2007 at the Pallative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley.
She was born September 22, 1934 in Gaston County to the late Hunter Pink Black and Lillian Gertrude Mauney Black. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was a cook for many years in the restaurant business. She was in the Seniors Bowling League.
She is survived by one daughter, Cindy Cagle of Lincolnton; one son, Chad Cagle and his wife Susan of Maiden; one brother Cedo Black of Cherryville; one brother-in-law, Ray Cagle and his wife Pat of Crouse; two sisters-in-law, Lavada Nutter and her husband Russ of Pickens, SC and Nora Beam and her husband Carroll of Iron Station; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Services were held at E. F. Drum Chapel. The interment was at Asbury UMC Cemetery. Pastor Tony Daniels and Rev. Robert Wensil officiated.
Lula ‘Mammy’ Helton
Mrs. Lula “Mammy” Hawkins Helton, 91, of Gaston Street in Lincolnton died November 14, 2007. She was born in Lincoln County and was the daughter of the late James and Jane Reinhardt Hawkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband Olie Alexander Helton and daughter Jane Leonhardt. She was retired from the textile industry.
Funeral services were November 18 in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Brian Williams and Rev. Tim Killian officiated. Burial followed in Hollybrook Cemetery.
She is survived by her son, Jimmie Helton of Denver; one daughter, Kay Payseur of Lincolnton; three brothers, Roy Hawkins, Jack Hawkins and Frank Hawkins all of Lincolnton; 11 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren.

Gordon “Randy” Yarber
Gordon Randolph “Randy” Yarber, III, 70, of Denver died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 at Grace Covenant Church, 17301 Statesville Road, Cornelius. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service at the church.
Mr. Yarber was born Aug. 26, 1943 in Ft. Lewis, WA to the late Hilda Snyder Yarber and Gordon Randolph Yarber, Jr. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandson, Eason Randolph Clarke. He is the retired president and owner of Yarber, Inc. Manufacturer’s Representatives, Industrial Packaging. He was a long time member of Grace Covenant Church in Cornelius, and a founding member of the Denver/Lake Norman Rotary Club.
Randy loved his family, his church and his community. He always had a quick smile and a big hug to share with everyone he met. We remember him for his generosity and love for others. He served his church in many ways, as an elder, council member and with several outreach and mission efforts, including Father’s Heart Adoption Ministries and Sonshine Center foster home in Linefork, KY.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Sandra Collins Yarber; two sons, Andy Yarber and wife Ann of Denver; John Yarber and wife Allison of Mt. Holly; one daughter, Debbi Clarke and husband Walt of Raleigh; one brother, Ed Yarber and wife Danielle of Roanoke, Va; two sisters, Libby Ward and husband Don of Hendersonville, NC, Sally Kelly and husband Butch of Stokesdale, NC; one brother-in-law, Les Collins and wife Billie; four grandchildren, Seth and Abigale Yarber, Emma Katherine and Redding Clarke; numerous nieces, nephews, and many loving friends and neighbors.
