Roger G. Sherrill
Roger Griffin Sherrill, 61, of Stanley, died Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Presbyterian Hospital in Huntersville.
He was born on April 5, 1946 in Charlotte to Margie Hager Sherrill and the late Griffin Moore Sherrill. He was an avid NASCAR fan, was known as a jack of all trades and was known as a giver, always willing to help his fellow man.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 44 years, Sheila Taylor Sherrill; sons, Mackie Roger Sherrill and Mark Sherrill (Lori); brother, Lonnie Sherrill, all of Stanley; sister, Nell Mayer of Charlotte; and grandson, Daniel Black.
Funeral services were held on February 29 in the chapel of Raymer Funeral Home with Rev. Reid Kiker officiating. Interment followed at Martha’s Chapel Cemetery.

Diane B. Strong
Diane Lynne Beacham Strong, 51, of Denver, died February 25, 2008 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Mrs. Strong was born in Chicago, IL and was the daughter of the late John and Lucille Beacham.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Strong; one son, James Michael Strong; sister, Pat Piper and husband George of Mobile, AL; a niece and nephew, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law all in Mobile, AL.
Her funeral was held at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Charlotte. Burial followed in Hollybrook Cemetery in Lincolnton.

William Arthur Fowler Jr.
Mr. William Arthur Fowler, Jr. 72, of 8117 Fairfield Forest Road in Denver, passed away on Saturday, June 21, 2008 at home.
A memorial service was scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, at Lake Norman Lutheran Church in Denver with Rev. Ron Nichols officiating. A private burial was held at Unity Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Mr. Fowler was born January 6, 1936 in Rutherford Co, NC to the late William Arthur and Dora Waters Fowler, Sr. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Judith Stebbins Fowler. He was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Fowler was retired from NationsBank.
Survivors include two daughters, Jill Fowler Thomas and husband Ivan of Stanley, Julie Fowler and husband Jon McCord of Huntersville.

Mike McCutcheon
Mike McCutcheon, 55, of Lafayette, CO, died June 14, 2008 in Boulder, CO following an accident. He was born on March 30, 1953 in Detroit, MI, the son of Leonard and Anne McCutcheon of Denver, N.C.
Mike graduated from Independence High School in Charlotte in 1971. He graduated with honors in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1985. He was inducted in the National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship, Phi Beta Kappa, and was on the Dean’s List. Mike went on to receive his Master’s of Science in immunology and developmental biology research at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. Mike worked for Anergen, Inc. in Redwood City, CA as a research scientist in immunology and in the Immunology Department for Genencor International in Palo Alto. He co-authored several articles published in scientific journals during his career.
Mike was a lover of nature with great respect and appreciation for the environment. He was also a licensed aircraft instrument pilot. Mountain biking was his passion and he loved to ride wherever he was. Mike was especially fond of the mountains of California and the Colorado Rockies. His life ended in a tragic accident on his mountain bike when he was struck by a dump truck.
Survivors include his parents, Leonard and Anne McCutcheon of Denver; three sisters, Jane Reese of Vale, Rebecca Jamison of Trinity, and Martha (Marty) Braswell of Orange Park, FL.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Stephanie Daniels, and by his grandparents Dr. and Mrs. L. C. McCutcheon of Green Bank, WV.

David Boyd McCurry
Mr. Boyd David McCurry, 79, of 6443 Sherwood Lane, died Friday, May 9, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center.
A graveside service will be held Monday, May 12 at Golden Valley United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Mr. McCurry was born on October 7, 1928 in Rutherford County to the late Dewey and Lucy Reynolds McCurry. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a truck driver with Carolina Freight and an independent owner-operator.
Survivors include three sons: Steve McCurry and wife Jamie of Sherrills Ford; Tim McCurry of Maiden; Mike McCurry and wife Lynn of Sherrills Ford; six grandchildren, Stephanie and husband Jason Boggs; Dana and husband Matt Plonk; Lauryn McCurry; Sheldon McCurry; Andrew McCurry; and Bradley McCurry; one great grandson, David Boggs.

Edna Campbell Strawser
Mrs. Edna Campbell Strawser, 62, of the Lincoln Nursing Center died Wednesday, July 16, 2008.
A memorial service was held on July 21 at Salem United Methodist Church in Denver with Chaplain Larry DeWalt officiating.
Mrs. Strawser was born in Virginia, the daughter of the late Robert Fredrick Campbell, Sr. and Alma Buchanan Campbell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Wayne Strawser. She was a retired waitress.
Survivors are one son, Carlton Oakley, II of Stanley; two daughters, Rose Anne Sutton of Hildebran and Joan Oakley Proffitt of Deland, Florida; one step-daughter, Ashley Strawser Smith of Denver; one brother, Robert F. Campbell, Jr. of Martinsville, VA; one sister, Ann Malcomb of Easley, SC: four grandchildren, Amanda Oakley St. Arnauld of Denver, Misty Dawn Stines of Deland, FL, Kyler Smith and Korbin Smith.

Viola Mae Campbell
Mrs. Viola Mae Campbell McCorkle, 93, of 2572 Highway 16 North, died July 20, 2008 at Cardinal Healthcare in Lincolnton.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at Westport Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Young and Pastor Don Greene officiating. Burial was in the Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. McCorkle was born August 8, 1914 in Catawba County to the late Oscar and Ada Drum Campbell. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Edison McCorkle; one daughter, Jewell McCorkle Reynolds; one brother, Russell Campbell; and one sister, Leona Jones.
Mrs. McCorkle was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Charles E. McCorkle and wife, Betty, of Loganville, GA; Gary S. McCorkle and wife, Starr, of Denver; six grandchildren, Dale Ray of Casar; Skip McCorkle and wife, Susan, of Lawrenceville, GA; Alan Davis and wife, Priscilla, of Buford, GA; Debbie Sutton of Lilburn, GA; Steven McCorkle and wife, Shannon, of Iron Station; Casey McCorkle and wife, Alysia, of Denver; 14 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren.
