William Brown Matthews
William Brown Matthews (Brown), 75, of Lowesville, died on July 8, 2008 at his home. He was born on January 21, 1933 in Charlotte. Mr. Matthews was a member of Hill’s Chapel United Methodist Church where the funeral services were held on July 12. Rev. Val Rosenquist and Rev. Hubert Clinard officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Brown retired in 1991 after 35 years of service with Duke Power at the Cowan’s Ford Hydro Station. He was preceded in death by his parents, William A. and Clara B. Matthews.
Survivors include his wife, Shelby Campbell Matthews; sons, David Matthews and wife Patricia of Lake Norman; Robert Matthews and wife Lori of Valdese; daughter, Debbie McMahon and husband Kevin of Stanley; brother, Robert Matthews and wife Ginger of Carrollton, GA; grandchildren, Kristin Cody, Andrew, Austin, Kody, and Lily Matthews; Melissa and Abby McMahon; Emily and Katie Martin; Tina, Mason and Bailey Crump; and great-grandchild, Hunter Cody.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, 107 Cedar St., Lincolnton, NC 28092, Hill’s Chapel UMC Cemetery Fund, 988 S Hwy 16, Stanley, NC 28164, or the charity of the donor’s choice.
Farrell Wesley ‘Sack’ Morrell
Mr. Farrell Wesley “Sack” Morrell, 54, of Cherry Point Lane in Denver died Monday, June 23, 2008.
Funeral services were held June 25 at Lucia Baptist Church where he was a member with Pastor Mike Davis and Warren Currence officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Morrell was born July 6, 1953 in Alabama, the son of Christine Ella Murrell Morrell and the late George Samuel Morrell. He retired from Duke Power where he was a maintenance supervisor. He was the owner/operator of commercial and residential property. Mr. Morrell was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Seneca, SC and Hejaz Shriner of the Seneca Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Ayers Morrell; his mother, Christine; one brother, Rickie Morrell and one sister, Lisa M. Parrish all of Denver.

David Edward Doran
David Edward Doran, 67 of Denver passed away on June 24, 2008 at his residence.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
Catawba Memorial Park, Funerals & Cremations is assisting the family.
Lester James Ballard
Lester James Ballard, age 83, of 4287 Highway 16 N. died Friday, Aug. 1, 2008 at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
Graveside services were held Monday Aug. 4 in Denver United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Stephen Knopp and Rev. Tim Killian officiating.
Mr. Ballard was born on April 6, 1925 in Catawba County to the late Robert and Johnsie Houk Ballard. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Sigmon. Mr. Ballard was retired from Union Carbide where he worked as a machine operator.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Armstrong Ballard of the home; one daughter, Carolyn B. Sigmon and husband Floyd of Sherrills Ford; two sisters, Flora Lawing of Charlotte, Margie Upright of Mooresville; four grandchildren, Leslie McIntosh of Sherrills Ford, Lauren Sigmon and Jason Sigmon of Charlotte, Connie Abernathy of Claremont; two great-grandchildren, Caroline McIntosh of Sherrills Ford, Cole Abernathy of Claremont; one son-in-law, Tony Sigmon of Denver.

Billy Gene Turbyfill
Billy Gene Turbyfill, 70, of Stanley died August 2, 2008 at his home following a three-year battle with cancer. A native of Avery County, he was preceded in death by his parents, Everette and Annie Greer Turbyfill, and a sister, Lucille Wilde.
Services were held August 5 at Faith Baptist Church where he was an active member. Rev. Mike Scott officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Billy retired in 2000 after a 41-year career as a truck driver. He was an avid NASCAR fan, loved his dogs, and spending time in his yard. He will be remembered for his many jokes, stories and colorful vocabulary.
Survivors include his wife Jane; three daughters, Robin Wallace of Richmond, VA., Madeline Phillips of Huntersville; and Lisa Mountain of Concord; two brothers, Joe Turbyfill of Stanley; and Earl Turbyfill of Charlotte; four sisters, Lillian Turnmire of Lenoir, Anna Willis of Cornelius, Nancy Turbyfill of Cornelius, and Angie Weatherly of Montezuma; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made in lieu of flowers to Faith Baptist Church, 5194 Old Plank Road, Iron Station, NC 28080.

William (Bill) Walker
William Tyson (Bill) Walker, 81, of Denver died Friday, July 25, 2008 at the Olde Knox Commons Nursing Home.
He was born Jan. 28, 1927 in Bucks County, PA to the late Benjamin and Mary Walker. Bill retired as a major in the US Marine Corps after 20 years, serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He later became a teacher and then a farmer in Sarasota, FL.
As a dedicated community servant, he was part of the Quaker Disaster Team and lifetime member of the NAACP in Lincoln County. Bill and his wife, Ruby, shared a wonderful and glorious 33 years together. He will be greatly missed.
Bill will be remembered by the Lincoln County NAACP. He was a lifetime member and served as first vice president of the Lincoln County branch. After moving to the area, Bill joined the local chapter. He and Ruby were very active and traveled to state, regional and national meetings with the branch.
“An icon like Bill cannot be replaced. He was dearly loved and will be sorely missed. The way he lived his life is a testament to who he was. He was a great man,” the August 2008 Lincoln County NAACP newsletter stated about Mr. Walker.
He is survived by his wife, Ruby Jackson Pressly Walker; sons, Jeff and wife Mary of Lakeland, FL; Clyde and wife Peggy of Huntersville; Harry of Lexington, KY; step-sons, Russell Pressly and wife Cheryl of Englewood, FL; and Ben Pressly of Dover, DE; step-daughters, Peggy Walker, Paula Strange and husband Cecil of Portland, OR; and Kathy Herbst and husband Richard of Denver; sisters, Emma Worthington, Thelma Tanner and Betsy Cushman; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Bill Walker's life will be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 9, 2008 at the family's home, 1910 Yacht Club Drive in Denver. All friends are welcome.

Jessica Ann Brantley
Mrs. Jessica Ann Crouse Brantley, 35, of Forney Hill Road, Denver passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Duke University Medical Center.
Her funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008 at Mountain View Baptist Church with Rev. Raymond Hamrick officiating. Burial was in Mountain View Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Brantley was born on December 28, 1972 in Iredell County. She was employed by Mountain Air Cargo as a Flight Records Administrator.
Survivors include her husband, Chad Brantley of the home; father James Mackie Crouse, Sr., Denver; mother, Joy S. Hansley, Denver; stepmother, Vickie Crouse; stepfather, Zennis Hansley; one brother James Mackie Crouse, Jr., Denver; paternal grandmother, Pauline Crouse, Denver; maternal grandfather, Jesse Story, Denver; two step-brothers, Scotty Hansley of Newton and Joshua Weese of Denver; and two step-sisters, Crystal Marlow of Newton and Jessica McAlister of Denver.
