SHELBY - Rueben Black, 72, of 864 East Zion Church Road, died Jan. 30, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Roberts Tabernacle CME Church where he was affiliated. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.
Born in Cleveland County, he was retired from Dunhill Department Store of North Carolina 28021.
Bill Beam
CHERRYVILLE - William “Bill” Floyd Beam, 73, of 859 Kenwood Road, died Jan. 29, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at Carpenters Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, he was retired from Bell South after 32 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, a deacon at his church, a choir member, and a Carolina Care Singer.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Huss Beam; a daughter, Rise Allen of Cherryville; a son, Tim Beam of Cherryville; a brother, Harold Lee Beam of Hickory; and four grandchildren, Tamara Allen, Cayce Beam, Hannah Allen and Allison Beam.

CHERRYVILLE - Peggy Coleman George, 78, of 509 Roy Eaker Road, died Jan. 29, 2003. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Born in Cherryville, she was the owner/operator of Cherryville Country Corner Florist.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas A. “Tuck” George; a son, Steve Hoyle of Cherryville; a daughter, LuAndra McNeely of Cherryville; four grandchildren, Zack McNeely, Jordon McNeely, Stevie-Marie Hoyle, and Mindy Hoyle Dyson; and two great-grandchildren.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Leroy Duffell, 66, of 347 Toby Bridges Road, died dec. 31, 2003. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenters Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Cleveland Memorial. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Born in Comer, Ga., he was formerly employed by Vulcan Material, served in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Midred Duffell of the home; two sons, Rodney Duffell of Gastonia and Roy Duffell of Kings Mountain; one daughter, Belinda Worley of Taylors, SC; two brothers, Raymond Duffell of Comer, Ga. and George Duffell of Athen, Ga.; two sisters, Nellie Vaughen and Mary Roach both of Royston, Ga. and six grandchildren, Kristie Lamaccha, Adam Worley, Lisa Worley, Daniel Duffell, Scott Worley and Alicia Worley.
Thomas Taylor
IRON STATION - Thomas Ross Taylor, 61, of 2070 Devine Road, died Dec. 30, 2003. A celebration of life will be held from 3 until 4 p.m. today at the Lincoln County Sherriff’s Office.
Born in Georgetown, Mass., he was an assistant jail administrator for the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Taylor of the home; two sons, Christopher Shafer of Rocky Mount and Alden Cummings of Oregon; two daughters, Joyce Taylor of Marion, Mont. And Charissa Jenkins of Stanley; one brother, Alden Taylor of Cammeron; one sister, Martha Peabody of Jackson St., died Dec. 31, 2003. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today at New Life Baptist Church. Burial followed in Westview Gardens.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, John London Jr. of Bessemer City; one daughter, Patricia London of Kings Mountain; two sisters, Betty Matheny of Forest City and Robin Murray of Fla.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Born in Catawba County, she was a retired registered nurse from the Brian Center and was a member of Gainsville Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Terry Lovelace of Newton; one granddaughter, Allison Lovelace; one sister, Joann Helms of Charlotte and one brother, Yates Lovelace of Lincolnton.

Born in Lincoln County, he was a self employed farmer.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Rev. Harley Spurgeon Scruggs, 97, of 343 Crocker Road, died Jan. 2, 2004. Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Sunday at Cherryville Missionary Methodist Church. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Rutherford County, he was a member and past president of the North Carolina Missionary Methodist Conference, and was a retired pastor from Cherryville Missionary Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Willie Shuford Scruggs of the home; seven daughters, Nadine Bagwell of Grover, Dot Carrigan of Kings Mountain, Gaynell Lail of Lake Wylie, SC, Creola Lail of Shelby, Pat Houser of Lake Tillery, SC, Tinky Scarborough of Kings Mountain and Debbie Fortenberry of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren.

Mabel Martin
Pearlie Mabel Martin, 94, of the Brian Center, died Jan. 2, 2004. A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Shiloh Methodist Church.
Born in Lincoln County, she was retired from Dr. John Gamble as a nurse and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.
