CHERRYVILLE — Hallie Smith Dellinger, 92, of Helton Road, died Jan. 11, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenters Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she was retired from Carlton Yarn Mill and was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Cloninger of Cherryville; one brother, Earl Smith of Mooresville; nine grandchildren, Ginger Ramsey, Ronald Ramsey, Linda Lovelace, Kelly Ramsey, Roger Ramsey, Bruce Ramsey, Carol Ann Sain, Penny Sherrill and Rhonda Ballard; 13 great-grandchildren and 13 great great-grandchildren.

Harry Arthur
CHERRYVILLE — Harry Ernest Arthur Sr., 90, of 1403 Wehunt Store Road, died Jan. 12, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at North Brook Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Born in Aiken, SC, he was a retired cabinet installer.
Survivors include his wife, Vevette W. Arthur of the home; two sons, Harry Arthur Jr. and John Arthur both of Cherryville; two daughters, Judy Willis of Lawndale and Betsy Chapman of Sherrills Ford; four sisters, Nancy Gwaltney of Statesville, Patricia Tuttle and Joey Arthur both of Reidsville and Wilson Arthur of Fla.; five grandchildren, Buddy Arthur, Dustin Arthur, JT Arthur, Jeff Arthur and Kim Carroll and three great-grandchildren.

Thomas Tillery
CHARLOTTE — Thomas Price “Tom” Tillery Jr., 80, died Jan. 12, 2004. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at the Wilson Chapel of Hankins and Whittington Funeral Service in Charlotte. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Born in Knoxville, Tenn., he was a retired sales representative from Delph Context Industries, a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and U.S. Army Military Police during WWII.
Survivors include his wife, Jackie Tillery; one daughter, Deborah Grant of Franklin, Tenn.; one son, Tripp Tillery of Iron Station; three grandchildren, Breanna Grant, Hannah Grant and John Thomas Grant.

Eugene King
MORGANTON — Eugene King, 72, of Carbon City Road, died Jan. 13, 2004. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home in Morganton. Burial will follow in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Born in Lincoln County, he served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his mother, Iola Smith King of Newton; three daughters, Melinda Evans and Kimberly Page both of Lincoln County and Tracy McDonald of Raleigh; six brothers, Eddie King and Billy King both of Lincolnton, Kenneth King, Larry King and Lonnie King all of Gastonia and Roger King of Newton; one sister, Dorothy Hudspeth of Lincolnton and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Kathy Gales
CHERRYVILLE — Kathy Jean Turner Gales, 52, of 2285 Chapel Lane, died Jan. 13, 2004. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 tonight at Stamey Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, she was employed by Lincoln Foot Care as a bookkeeper, a member of the church choir and the Visions Sunday School class.
Survivors include her husband, Gary Gales of the home; one daughter, Melanie Bumgarner of Cherryville; one sister, Linda Deaver of Cherryville; one granddaughter, Megan Bumgarner; one grandson, Matthew Bumgarner and her mother, Binnie Bivens Turner of Cherryville.

Leonard Thomas
RUTHERFORD — Leonard Thomas, 76, formerly of Rutherford County, died Jan. 13, 2004.
Arrangements are incomplete at Enloe Mortuary in Shelby.

John Lancaster
LENOIR — John Landrum Lancaster, 79, of Grandview Circle, died Jan. 13, 2004. Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Maiden. Burial will follow in Mays Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
He was born in Catawba County.
Survivors include two daughters, Lula Ingle of Hickory and Frances Smith of Iron Station; two brothers, Howard Lancaster of South Carolina and Kenneth Lancaster of Lenoir; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Annie McSwain
CHERRYVILLE — Annie Bess McSwain, 91, of Lincoln Nursing Center, formerly of Leonhardt Road., died Jan. 13, 2004. Funeral services were at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include five grandchildren, Gale Milburn, Richard McSwain, Teresa Ikard, Vickie Hovis and Robin Heafner; one great-granddaughter and three sisters, Nell Wright of Lincolnton, Connie Gantt and Bertie Wright both of Cherryville.

GREENSBORO — Albert Dwayne “Al” Droege, 54, of 5605 Wildrose Drive, died Jan. 14, 2004. A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. today at Christ Community Church.
Born in Seymour, Ind., he was a sales representative for La-Z-Boy and a member of Christ Community Church.
Survivors include his wife, Candy Crane Droege of the home; two sons, Drew Droege of Los Angeles, Calif. and Garrett Droege of Wilmington and one brother, Don Droege of Charlotte.

Mary McCoy
Mary Grigg McCoy, 62, of Gastonia Hwy., died Jan. 13, 2004. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. today at South River Baptist Church Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a sewer.
Survivors include her husband, Bill McCoy of Lincolnton; one son, Terry McCoy of Lincolnton; one daughter, Elizabeth McCoy of Lincolnton; four brothers, David Grigg, Jim Grigg, Johnny Grigg all of Lincolnton and Ervin Grigg of Vale; one sister, Kay Cook of Lincolnton and four grandchildren.

CR Harrison
Columbus Ray “CR” Harrison, 84, of S. Grove St., died Jan. 13, 2004. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today at Redemption Outreach Center. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Born in Mt. Holly, he was an electrician.
Survivors include one sister, Zelma Terry of Trenton, Ohio; two brothers, Zimmie Harrison of Ranlow and Glen Harrison of Charlotte.

W. Bumgarner
NEWTON — William Yates Bumgarner, 61, of 1833 Bowman Avenue, died Jan. 14, 2004. A memorial service will be at 7:30 tonight at Burke Mortuary Chapel in Newton. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 7:30 tonight prior to the service at the funeral home.
Born in Buncombe County, he was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Underwood Bumgarner of the home; two daughters, Brielle Bumgarner of the home and Terri Roughton of NY; two sons, William Bumgarner and Gregory Bumgarner both of Morganton; his mother, Lintie Campbell of Asheville; one sister, Margaret Wheeler of Asheville; two brothers, Phillip Campbell and Danny Campbell both of Asheville and nine grandchildren.

Eula Bumgardner
CHERRYVILLE — Eula Tew Bumgardner, 76, of 415 N. Mountain St., died Jan. 13, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Waco Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
Born in Sampson County, she was retired from Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include four sons, Billy Bumgardner of Friendswood, Mitchell Bumgardner of Cherryville, Johnny Bumgardner and Tommy Bumgardner both Shelby; four daughters, Louise Porter of Shelby, Susie Watts of Polkville, Anita Adair of Taylorsville and Reneé Beam of Cherryville; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Tommy Tew of Raleigh and Lemon Tew of Stedmar; four sisters, Ernestine Westbrook and Annie Faircloth both of Wade, Josephine Barefoot of El Paso, Texas and Brenda Tew of Georgia.

Robert Preslar
ALEXIS — Robert “Bobby” Allen Preslar, 15, of 2237 Little Mountain Road, died Jan. 13, 2004. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carothers Funeral Home in Stanley. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Born in Gaston County, he was a student at East Lincoln High School and a member of New Testament Church of the First Born.
Survivors include his mother and step-father, Brenda and Aaron Presley of Alexis; father and step-mother, Larry and Pattie Preslar of Denver and three siblings, Casey Preslar, Dalton Preslar and AJ Presley.

Fred Abernethy
NEWTON — Fred Eugene Abernethy, 80, of the Lutheran Home West, died Jan. 13, 2004. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Corinth Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 tonight at the church.
Born in Catawba County, he was retired from Hickory Manufacturing Company, worked at Blackburn Solid Waste Site and was a WWII U.S. Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Anderson Abernethy of the home; two sons, Kenneth Abernethy of Hampton, Va. and Allen Abernethy of Newton; one sister, Clara Harris of Hickory; one brother, Everette Abernethy of Hudson; four grandsons, Eric Abernethy, Brian Abernethy, Shea Abernethy and Aaron Abernethy and three great-grandchildren.
