DECATUR, Ga. — Robert Thomas Morris, 76, of 1511 Sanden Ferry Drive, formerly of Union, S.C., died Feb. 20, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Duncan Acres United Methodist Church where he was a former member. Burial will follow in Union Memorial Gardens. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Born in Union, S.C. he was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran, and formerly employed with Milliken Company — EMMD Plant, and worked with the Internal Revenue Service in Atlanta, Ga. until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Olive Davis Morris; six daughters, Barbara Raetsch of Delaware, Bobbie Wylie and Ann Putnam, both of Cherryville, Donna Broome of Lincolnton, Cathy Anderson of Duluth, Ga., and Patricia Kinley of Westminister, Md.; one son, Larry Branum of Plano, Texas; two brothers, Carl Morris and Paul Morris, both of Spartanburg; one sister, Frances M. Bates of N. Augusta; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Paula Westergard
KINSTON — Paula Teresa “Terry” Westergard, 46, died Feb. 18, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Born in Catawba County, she worked for Wal-Mart.
Survivors include one son, U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Dustin E. Cook of Japan; one daughter, Misty R. Farnsworth of Maiden; her mother, Shirley Pope of Maiden; her step-father, Terrell Pope of Maiden; three brothers, Richard Angel and David Angel, both of Sherrills Ford, and Michael Angel of Hickory; and eight grandchildren.
Patricia Baker
CHARLOTTE — Patricia “Pat” Davis Baker, 65, of 2200 Rice Planter Road and formerly of Cherryville, died Feb. 21, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter’s Funeral Home. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight at the funeral home from 7 until 9.
Born in Gaston County, she was a member of Maranatha Baptist Church. She was retired from IBM of Charlotte and was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Scott Baker of Charlotte and Howie Baker of Yadkinville; her mother, Ophelia Grigg Davis of Cherryville; one sister, Dawn Stroupe of Raleigh; and one grandchild, Christian Matthew Baker.
Martha Jenkins
HICKORY — Martha White Jenkins, 83, of 1430 4th Street, died Feb. 20, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Alvin Memorial Chapel of Allen Mitchell Funeral Home. Burial will follow at a later date.
Born in York County, S.C., she was a homemaker, and a member of Friendship Baptist Church where she was in the Missionary Circle, and on the Usher Board.
Survivors include two daughters, Clara Johnson of Hickory and Jessie W. Mungro of Lincolnton; five grandchildren, Sharon Mungro, James C. Mungro Jr., Shelia M. G’Odalno, Warren Mungro, and Jeffery D. White; 19 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

William McMurry
William Thomas McMurry, 75, of 223 West Church St., died Feb. 21, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at McKendree United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 6 until 7:30 at Warlick Funeral Home.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a driver for General Freight.

Alice Hammitt
CHERRYVILLE — Alice “Benny” Hammitt, 81, the of Cardinal Care Center, died Feb. 21, 2002. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home. Burial followed in City Memorial Cemetery.
Born in Gaston County, she was an inspector for Sweetree until retirement and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cherryville.
Survivors include two sons, Herman Travis “Bud” Hammitt of Boiling Springs, and Ned Carpenter Hammitt of Denver; one daughter, Frances H. Heavner of Cherryville; one sister, Virginia “Jenny” Baxter of Cherryville; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

VALE — Roger Lee Foster, 49, of 3159 Prue Sain Lane, died Feb. 24, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Hullender Family Cemetery.
Born in Cleveland County, he worked in the furniture industry.
Survivors include two sisters, Shirley Ledford, and Linda Ledford, both of Lincolnton.
Lois May
PLANTATION, Fla. — Lois Elizabeth May, 90, died Feb. 21, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church of Plantation. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shady Grove Baptist Church in Cherryville, N.C. The family will receive friends in the family life center of the church following the graveside services.
She attended Central Baptist Church of Miami, Fla. for 57 years before attending First Baptist Church of Plantation.
Survivors include one daughter, Betty Jo Losey; one step-son, Bill May; one step-daughter, Myra Jo Griffith; one brother, Jay Witherspoon; three grandchildren, Claudia Ann Farren, Norma Jean Sousa, and Ray Dean; and four great-grandchildren.

Gladys Aderholt Kiser Rhyne, 76, of 2847 Gaston-Webbs Chapel Road, died Feb. 23, 2002. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. today in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial followed in Hollybrook Cemetery.
Born in Gaston County, she was an executive secretary with American State Insurance Co. until retirement.

Born in Gaston County, she was the owner and manager of Dorothy Faye’s Inc. of Cherryville and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband, Thomas Walter Smith Jr.; one son, Dwight S. Smith of Kings Mountain; her mother, Faye Grigg Black of Cherryville; three brothers, Billy Black of Crystal River, Fla., Charles Black of Morgantown, Ky., and Bob Black of Lincolnton; and one sister, Sonja B. Hoyle of Cherryville.

LAWNDALE — Samuel “Sam” Franklin Proctor, 93, of Jackson White Road, died Feb. 24, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Casar where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8:30 at Stamey Funeral Home.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a self-employed farmer and textile worker. He was a deacon at his church, the former choir director, and Sunday School Superintendent. He was also the former South Mountain Association Clerk.
Survivors include five sons, Andrew Proctor of Hickory, Boyd Proctor of Sedro Wooley, Wash., Sam Proctor of Warren, Mich., Truett Proctor of Shelby, and Truman Proctor of Casar; four daughters, Marie Hoyle of Shelby, Ruth Lytle of Lawndale, Lilly Hamrick of Fallston, and Linda Spencer of Lincolnton; two sisters, Vangie Bowman of Lawndale, and Vernie White of Casar; 22 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Sallie Huss Stamey, 91, of the Brian Center, formerly of 501 South Grier Street, died Feb. 23, 2002. A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church. Burial followed in Hollybrook Cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, she worked as a spinner in the textile industry.
Survivors include three daughters, Norene Setzer of Conover, Tamera Whitener of Lincolnton, and Dianne Jenkins of Cherryville; one son, Ray E. Stamey of Lincolnton; one sister, Bryte Laney of Lincolnton; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Max Houser, and Ted Houser, both of Lincolnton; one daughter, Brenda Eaton of Cary; three sisters, Mazelle Houser, and Pearl Houser, both of Lincolnton, and Fushia Heavner of Cherryville; and five grandchildren.
