LAWNDALE — John “J.D.” Gidney, 77, of 112 Pony Barn Road, died Jan. 6, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Philadelphia United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service.
Born in Cleveland County, he served in the U.S. Army; attended Zion Hill Baptist Church, and worked for Burns Construction until retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Ethel Banks of Hickory and Evelyn Russell of Shelby; four step-sons, Roy Wilson Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., John Wilson of Iron Station, Aubrey Cunningham of Gastonia and Kenneth Wilson of Lincolnton; two step-daughters, Doretha Barber of Washington, D.C. and Gwendolyn Cobb of Lincolnton; two sisters, Ann McKnight of Lawndale and Ruth Ruffen of Summitt, N.J.; six grandchildren; 32 step-grandchildren; and 34 step-great-grandchildren.

IRON STATION — Helen McCall Liles, 87, died Jan. 5, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Aaron Temple United Methodist Church in Bennettsville, S.C. Burial will follow in Benny Quick Cemetery. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service at the church.
Born in Marlboro County, S.C., she was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Ola Mae Foster of Iron Station and Helen Kelly of Willimantic, Conn.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

CROUSE — Lander “L.C.” Carter Ford Jr., 75, of 2793 St. Marks Church Road, died Jan. 10, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Crouse United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 6 until 8 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home.
Born in Gaston County, he was a U.S. Navy veteran, and worked for Carolina Freight as a local driver for 26 years until retirement. He was also a member of the Lincolnton Masonic Lodge #137, and the Charlotte Scottish Rite.
Survivors include his wife, Reba Anthony Ford; a son, Landon “Lannie” Carter Ford III of Maiden; three foster brothers, Troy Carpenter, Harold Carpenter and Fred Carpenter, all of Cherryville; a foster sister, Ruby Shumaker of Cherryville; and four grandchildren, Lindsey Ford, Wesley Ford, Kandon Ford, and Devon Shook.

Leo Norman Merriam, 72, of 1129 Buffalo Shoals Road, died Jan. 9, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
He worked in the textile industry.

SHELBY — Minnie Sue Haynes Dover, 80, formerly of 103 Dellinger Road, died Jan. 10, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.
Born in Rutherford County, she was the former owner of Sue’s Beauty Salon, and the former secretary of Shelby Wood Preserving. She was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and worked in food service at James Love Elementary School.
Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie D. Roberts of Cherryville and Robin D. Burns of Shelby; three sisters, Betty Lyles of Spindale, Mae Spillars of Ellerbe, and Evie Lee Jolly of Waco, Texas; one brother, Rev. Wayne Haynes of Lincolnton; five grandchildren, Richie Roberts, Hayley Beane, Tommy Burns Jr., Emily Burns, and Holly Burns; and two great-grandchildren.

Charles Beatty
CARY — Charles M. “Pete” Beatty, 83, formerly of Greensboro, died Jan. 9, 2002. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Hinshaw Memorial United Methodist Church. Internment will follow in Westminster Garden Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall two hours prior to the service.
Born in Sherrills Ford, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps who served during WWII, a manager of the Piedmont Pie Company for many years, and a 32nd degree Mason. He also worked as a salesman for Basic Foods Inc. until retirement, and after retirement was a food consultant for Brokay Products Inc.
Survivors include his wife, Ora Howard Beatty; two daughters, Linda Bodenstab and Debra Beatty, both of Raleigh; one sister, Elizabeth Beatty of Greensboro; and two granddaughters, Tara Bodenstab and Robin Bodenstab.

VALE — Nannie “Nan” Leatherman Brooks, 83, of 6642 Sain Milling Road, died Jan. 10, 2002. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel .
Born in Lincoln County, she was a former member of the Daniel Boone Nature Gardens, and was active in many national, state, and local garden clubs. She was a master flower show judge and master gardener.
Survivors include her husband, Paul Brooks; two sons, David H. Brooks of Durham and James A. Brooks of the home; two daughters, Nancy Ustach of Beaufort and Lisa Anne Rhodes of Durham; three brothers, Bill Leatherman of Mint Hill, Lewis Leatherman of Vale, and Paul Leatherman of Sanford; two sisters, Ruth Seabock of Hickory and Clara Scronce of Vale; and four grandchildren.

SHELBY — Dennis Lee Bell, 60, of 113 Blackhawk Drive, died Jan. 11, 2002. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Stamey Funeral Home Chapel.
Born in Cleveland County, he served in the National Guard, worked as a motor rewinder for Electric Motor Service until retirement, and was a life-time member of the Green River Beagle Club.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Earwood Bell; two sons, Mike Bell, and Richard Bell, both of Shelby; a daughter, Lori Ann Ledford of Cherryville; a brother, Doug Bell of Shelby; two sisters, Elaine Gettys of Gastonia, and Jewell Kendrick of Kings Mountain; and three grandchildren, Candy Bell, Dale Ledford Jr., and Jake Bell.

Born in Gaston County, she worked for Dellinger Jewelry for 15 years. At her church, she was a member of the Presbyterian Women and the Earnest Workers Sunday School class.
