STANLEY - Ned Russell James, 77, of 2420 Clemson Lane, died Feb. 27, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Chapel at Woodlawn Funeral Home. Internment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery.
Born in Taylorsville, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII, and was the former sales manager for Bost Bakery, Inc. of Charlotte. He was Past Master of St. Andrews Masonic Lodge #702, a member of Charlotte Oasis Temple of the Shrine, the Radiance Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of Durham Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Robert W. James Sr. of Stanley, Cecil Lawrence James and Ned Russell “Rusty” James, both of Charlotte, and Douglas E. James of Annapolis, Md.; and 10 grandchildren.

SHELBY - Juanita Hazel Willis, 58, of 2260 Taylor Road, formerly of Vale, died Feb. 27, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Elizabeth Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a homemaker, and a member of the Love-Joy Sunday School class at her church.
Survivors include one son, Charles Ingle of Vale; her mother, Maxine Wright of the home; one brother, Lee Willis of Boston, Mass.; six grandchildren, Maggie Thompson, Lacey Thompson, Ashley Ingle, Katie Ingle, Charlie Ingle, and Casey Ingle; and one great-grandchild.

BESSEMER CITY - Callie Mae Davis Wyont, 83, of 509 Old N.C. 277 Highway, died Feb. 28, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Puett United Methodist Church where she was a member. Born in Gaston County, she was a sales clerk at Matthew Belk in Gastonia until retirement.

Carlos McCreight
Carlos Robert “Mac” McCreight, 80, of 1548 Home Trail, died Feb. 28, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Lincolnton Church of God. Burial will follow in Gaston Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight at the church from 7 until 8:30.
Born in Pelzer, S.C., he was a U.S. Navy WWII veteran, and an engine line coordinator with Ford Motor Company until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ruth McCreight; four sons, Bobby McCreight, and David McCreight, both of Gastonia, Chris Rice of Clover, S.C., and Larry Rice of Indiana, Penn.; three daughters, Carolyn Holland, and Shirley Scruggs, both of Kings Mountain, and Patsy Reep of Spencer Mountain; 20 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Joan Maddox
TERRELL - Joan Dawson Madox, 82, died Feb. 28, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Rehobeth United Methodist Church. Burial will follow on Sunday at Guilford Memorial Park in Greenboro at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church two hours prior to the service.
She was a schoolteacher in the Mexico, Mo. area, and worked as an accountant for Southern Building Maintenance. She was past president of the Nat Greene Chapter of ABWA, past State Secretary and Treasurer of Good Sam, and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, James Edward Maddox; a sister, T. A. “Page” Piper of Mexico, Mo.; and three grandchildren, Edward Saunders Maddox, James Michael Maddox, and Gregory Scott Maddox.

Daisy Crouse Crow, 92, of the Brian Center, formerly of Maiden, died today, March 1, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel at Burke Mortuaries. Burial will follow in Maiden City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Attorney William Morris dead at 77
March 1, 2002 - A former assistant district attorney who served in Lincoln County died Wednesday after several years of declining health.
William L. Morris, 77, who had been residing at Lincoln Nursing Center, will be remembered as a competent lawyer and friend.
“He was one of my best friends and I’m sure going to miss him,” said Rathmul Helms, who had known Morris for 50 years.
Former Lincolnton Chief of Police Tommy Burgin, a department detective when he met Morris, remembers him as a “feisty” attorney.
“He was an institution and an awesome DA,” said former law office partner Bob Powell.
Morris was born Nov. 1, 1924 to the late Ralph and Bessie Jane Morris of Concord.
After graduating from Lenoir Rhyne College, he attended Wake Forest Law School, where he served as president of the Freshman Law Class. He also was a Merchant Marine and served in World War II.
Morris worked with the District Attorney’s office serving Lincoln, Gaston and Catawba counties and, in later years, worked in private practice.
Morris was a charter member of the Lincolnton Jaycees, a member of the Elks, Rotary, Knights of the Pithias and the VFW. He also served as past president of the Lincoln County Bar Association 27th Judicial District.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church in Lincolnton. His ashes will be scattered during a private service.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Bean Morris of Sherrills Ford; one son, William L. Morris of Anoka, Minn.; one daughter, Rose Morris Luppold of Garland, Texas; a step-daughter, Jacquelyn W. Dishmond of Statesville; a step-son, Scott A. Walker of Hickory; one brother, Clyde J. Morris of Sherrills Ford; one sister, Ruth Morris Richardson; five grandchildren, Ross W. Kenyon, W. Scott Morris, Michael W. Morris, John R. Luppold, and Stacia C. Luppold; six step-grandchildren, Candace Dishmond, Tyler Dishmond, Wesley Dishmond, Tristan Walker, Joseph Walker, and Jacob Walker; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Lincoln County, Alzheimer’s Association, American Diabetes Association, American Heart Association, or the First Baptist Church of Lincolnton.

William Goodman
Fall Branch, Tenn. - William “Will” Charles Goodman, formerly of Lincolnton, N.C., died March 1, 2002. A funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Fall Branch Chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Homes. Burial followed in Depew's Chapel Church Cemetery with military rites.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served in Desert Storm and following discharge became an active member of the U.S. National Guard, Gate City Branch. He was a member of Springdale Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife Jeannie Short Goodman and a daughter Hannah Brooke Goodman.

Born in Cleveland County, she worked in the textile industry until retirement.

CHERRYVILLE - Leon Ralph Baxter, 88, of 3073 Sorrells Baxter Road, died Mar. 1, 2002. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a U. S. Army WWII veteran awarded five bronze stars for five major campaigns, was a former member of the Lincoln County Board of Education, and former County Committee Chairman of the Agricultural Stablization and Conservation service. He worked as a self-employed farmer until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Newton Baxter; one son, Jerry W. Baxter of Cherryville; three daughters, Marsha Riddle of Morganton, Jean Skibo of Cherryville, and Lynn Dellinger of Hudson; six grandchildren, Keith Brown II, Josh Skibo, Anna Skibo, Beth Williams, Matt Dellinger, and Travis Baxter; and one great-grandchild.

VALE - Loyd John White, 77, of 4167 White Road, formerly of Ore. and Nev., died Mar. 1, 2002. A graveside service was held at 11:30 a.m. today in Bethphage Lutheran Church cemetery.
Born in Catawba County, he was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, and worked as a casino operator until retirement.
Survivors include two brothers, Claude White of Hendersonville and Evan White of Vale; and three sisters, Bessie Maxwell of Hickory, Mallie White of Vale and Eva White Short of Lawndale.
