Thelma Goforth
BLACKSBURG, S.C. - Thelma Beam Goforth, 82, of 742 Antioch Road, died March 4, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s United Methodist Church where she was a member. Interment will follow in Beulah United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a teacher for 30 years and a member of the NCEA, the SCEA, and Delta Kappa Gamma, and former member of the Home Demonstration Club, and the Grange. She also taught Sunday School and held many offices at her church.
Survivors include two sons, George E. Goforth of Easley, and John R. Goforth of Kings Mountain, N.C.; two daughters, Ann G. Rosi of Chigaco, Ill., and Jean G. Peach of Gastonia; N.C., one sister, Esther Shuford of Lincolnton, N.C.; and seven grandchildren, Gabrielle Rosi, Domino Rosi, Marty Goforth, Brad Goforth, Katherine Peach, James Peach, and Sally Peach.

Hazel Mauney
CROUSE - Hazel Louise Gilbert Mauney, 73, of 2355 Pleasant Grove Church Road, died March 4, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Crouse United Methodist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8:30 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home.
She worked with Ethan Allen of Maiden for 15 years until retirement.
Survivors include her husband, Hubert B. Mauney; two sons, Henry Lee Mauney of Crouse, and Bennett G. Mauney of Lake Norman; two daughters, Betty Jean Huss of Crouse, and Libby M. Helms of Lincolnton; one sister, Rosie Madeline Fulbright of Lincolnton; two brothers, Junior Robert Gilbert of Vale, and William Hugh Gilbert of Pilot Mountain; eight grandchildren, Bryan Huss, Sandy Huss, Becky Heafner, Heather Helms, Dustin Helms, Josh Mauney, Melissa Mauney, and Trent Mauney; and one great-grandchild.

John Carpenter Sr.
CHERRYVILLE - John Alton Carpenter Sr., 90, of 1138 Baxter Road, died March 5, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8:30 at Carpenter’s Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a farmer, and salesman for Cherry Motors of Cherryville until retirement. He also worked with Carpenter’s Funeral Home, was a charter member of the Gaston County Farm Bureau, chairman of the official board of his church, trustee chairman, and caretaker of the church cemetery for 20 years. He helped establish Hugh’s Pond Volunteer Fire Department, and the original electrical and telephone co-op company for Western Lincoln and Gaston Counties.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Beam Carpenter; four sons, John Carpenter of Laurinburg, Jack Carpenter of Raleigh, Dr. T. Gene Carpenter of Granite Falls, and Patrick Carpenter of Anderson, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Dan Carpenter, Joe Carpenter, David Carpenter, Deborah Edwards, Rebekah Carpenter, Tommy Carpenter, Thad Carpenter, and Trent Carpenter; and seven great-grandchildren.

CHERRYVILLE - Henry Camp, 79, of 3670 Sorrells Baxter Road, died March 8, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday First Baptist Church of Lawndale where he was a member. Born in California, she worked as a bookkeeper until retirement.
Survivors include her husband, Frank McGinnis; one son, Frank Stephen “Mac” McGinnis of Lincolnton; three daughters, Jeannette King of Lincolnton, Betty Brittain of Cherryville, and Connie Peach of Stanley; one sister, Gladys Boyd of Healdsburg, California; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Born in Catawba County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Darrell Lawing of Charlotte, and Jerry Lawing of Maiden; one daughter, Avoneal L. Ballard of Charlotte; one sister, Vassie Robinson of Maiden; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was born in Gaston County.

Black Jr. of North Brook; three daughters, Phyllis Jeter, and Leslie Houser, both of Kings Mountain, and Sandra Marullo of Fall River, Mass.; one brother, William “Trigger” Black of Cherryville; and two sisters, Johnnie Beth Stacy of Cherryville, and Margarette Duschel of Monroe.

James Lockee of Lenoir, Coyte Lockee of Valdese, Gerald Lockee, Donald Lockee, and Aronda Lockee, all of Connelly Springs; six sisters, Dorothy Mace of Hickory, Vashti Beard of Maiden, Junita Reinhardt of Valdese, Sherry Duckett, and Carolyn Herman, both of Connelly Springs, and Brenda Melchor of Vale; three grandchildren, Jeaneen Fletcher, John Kennerly Jr., and Lia Kennerly; and five great-grandchildren.

Daniel Webster Hoover, 82, of 4025 Highway 182, died March 8, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Bethphage Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, and received two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts. He worked with Joe & Jim’s Food Stores as a butcher until retirement.
Survivors include two sons, Tony D. Hoover of Claremont, and Jerry D. Hoover of Lincolnton; two brothers, Noah Hoover of Lincolnton, and Dave Hoover of Live Oak, Fla.; four sisters, Nell Beam of Cherryville, Earlene Cornwell of Lawndale, Lunez Kissiah of Charlotte, and Catherine Patterson of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and one grandchild, Lance Hoover of Matthews.
