CONNELLY SPRINGS - Sharon Jones Marshburn, 69, died March 15, 2002. A funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Hildebran United Methodist Church where she was a member. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.
Born in Wilmington, N.C., she was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Edwin R. Marshburn; two sons, David R. Marshburn of Morehead City, and William E. Marshburn of Hildebran; two daughters, Brenda A. Marshburn, and Angela L. Marshburn, both of Hickory; her mother, Mayzelle H. Jones of Wilmington; four sisters, Rebecca J. Fullwood, and Angela J. Young, both of Wilmington, Penelope J. Lander of New Bern, and Cecelia I. Wymna of Phoenix. Ariz.; and four grandchildren, Megan Marshburn, Joshua Marshburn, Naaman Marshburn, and Michael Marshburn.
Memorials may be made to Hildebran United Methodist Church, 110 S. Center St., Hildebran, N.C. 28637.

Willie Hoyle
DENVER - Willie Gene Hoyle, 72, of 6279 Iris Court, formerly of King Wilkinson Road, died this morning, March 20, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Gloryland Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday night from 7 until 8:30 at Warlick Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a driver for Carolina Freight for 18 years until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Hoyle; two sons, Donnie Hoyle, and Rickie Hoyle, both of Iron Station; one daughter, Marlene J. Jenkins of Kannapolis; one step-son, Billy Bray of Mt. Airy; one step-daughter, Dianne Houston of Denver; five grandchildren, Brad Hoyle, Wesley Hoyle, Monica Vandiford, John Hoyle, and Lindsay Houston; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to Gloryland Baptist Church, 2935 King Wilkinson Rd., Lincolnton, N.C. 28092; or Alzeheimers Association, 3420 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, N.C. 28215.

Judson Helms
CROUSE - Judson Carl Helms, 95, of 2496 Shoal Road, died this morning, March 20, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethphage Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday night at the church from 6:30 until 8:30.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a farmer and tax lister for Lincoln County until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Gilbert Helms; one son, Ted C. Helms of Knoxville, Tenn.; one sister, Lela Mahn Willis of Crouse; one brother, Howard Helms of Cherryville; and three grandchildren, Nelson Bumgarner, Susan Wishon, and Lori Bumgarner.
Memorials may be made to Bethphage Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 3400 Hwy. 182, Lincolnton, N.C. 28092.

Mary Wright
CHARLOTTE - Mary Wallace Hoover Wright, 92, formerly of Lincolnton, died March 19, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Hollybrook Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church where she was a member. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a teacher in the Lincoln County Schools for many years, President and Vice-president of the UDC Southern Star Chapter #477, a charter member of the Review Book Club, and taught Sunday School at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. She also served as President of the Lutheran Women’s Society, and was a member of the Woman’s Missionary Society.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathryn Wright Jackson, and Rebecca Wallace Wright, both of Charlotte; one brother, Dan Calvin Hoover of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Lisa Tennessee; two brothers, Ronald Short, and Harvey Short, both of Lawndale; one sister, Helen Hudson of Morganton; and five grandchildren, Ashley Short, Kayley Sigmon, Jennifer Short, Matthew Sigmon, and TJ Swink.

Juanita Caldwell
Juanita Sigmon Caldwell, 78, of 1436 Laboratory Road, died March 20, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 at the funeral home.
Born in Lincoln County, she worked in the textile industry until retirement.
Survivors include one son, Steve Caldwell of Kernersville; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Willie Williams
BESSEMER CITY - Willie C. “W.C.” Williams, 74, of 541 Carson-Hunter Road, died March 19, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Beulah Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 in the chapel at Ebony & White’s Funeral Service.
Born in Gaston County, he worked for Burlington Industries, Tryon School, J.P. Stevens, and Gaston County DSS as a foster parent who cared for 286 children.
Survivors include his wife, Eula Mae Hunter Williams; two sons, Gerald B. Williams of Bessemer City, and Randy G. Williams of Virginia Beach, Va.; five daughters, Ruby W. Jeffries, Doey W. Byers, Alfredia W. McNeil, and Marsha W. Womick, all of Bessemer City, and Gail W. McCoy of Gastonia; one brother, Isaac Williams of Bessemer City; two sisters, Delzora W. Thompson of Jamica, N.Y., and Margaret Boyd of Gastonia; 22 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Junie Goebel
GASTONIA - Junie Murielene Cobb Goebel, 80, of 2435 Lewiston Drive, died March 20, 2002. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Olney Presbyterian Church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 in the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service.
Born in Catawba County, she was the former owner of East Airline Grocery in Gastonia for 22 years.
Survivors include one son, Jeff Goebel of Gastonia; three daughters, Sarah Goebel Haney of Stanley, Judy Goebel Wooten of Lincolnton, and Lenora Goebel Lail of Dallas; one sister, Helen Beauchamp of Gastonia; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

James Miller
CLAREMONT - James Arthur Miller, 87, of 2942 Denwood Drive, died March 18, 2002. A graveside service for the immediate family and friends was held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery in Hickory.
Born in Pennsylvania, he was a member of St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Hickory and a World War II veteran. He worked as a furniture designer with Century and Impack Furniture until retirement.
Survivors include his son, Arthur Miller of Claremont; one daughter, Cindy Swain of Casagranda, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Burke Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Buff
HIGH SHOALS - Pauline Hovis Buff, 87, of 115 Church Street, died March 21, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Hovis Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Buff of Lincolnton, and James Buff of Brookline, N.H.; one daughter, Linda Blackwelder of Townville, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to High Shoals Methodist Church, 806 Low Bridge Rd., Iron Station, N.C. 28080.

Roy Wright
LAWNDALE - Roy Allen Wright, 57, of 453 Casar-Belwood Road, died March 18, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. today in the chapel at Stamey Funeral Home.
Born in Spencer, W.Va., he worked as a residential brick mason and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Dian Mullinaz Wright; three sons, Scott Wray,and Sam Wray, both of Polkville, and Jamey Wright of Lawndale; one daughter, Nichole Wright of Lawndale; his mother, Lena Alice Lipscomb Watts of Lincolnton; two sisters, Ann Marie Williams, and Mary Alice Michle, both of Canton, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Ashley Willis, Andrew Willis, and Marie Wray.
Memorials may be made to Mrs. Dian Wright, 453 Casar-Belwood Rd., Lawndale, N.C. 28090.

Bertie Carnes
Bertie Branton Carnes, 89, 2406 Keener Road, died March 21, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the chapel at Warlick Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7:30 until 8:30 at the funeral home.
Born in Swain County, she was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Richard Carnes of Lincolnton; two daughters, Linda C. Cook of Lincolnton, and Joyce Ramsey of Williamsburg, Va.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hickory Bethel Wesleyan Church in Hickory; or Boger City Wesleyan Church in Lincolnton.

Walter Chapman
CHERRYVILLE - Walter Jenkins Chapman, 88, of 700 Self Street, died March 24, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First Wesleyan Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday at the church from 1 until 2:30 p.m.
Born in Burke County, he was a photographer and owned Chapman Studio of Cherryville until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Kennedy Chapman; two sons, Robert Chapman of Lincolnton, and Ken Chapman of Cherryville; one sister, Addie Hicks of Cherryville; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to First Wesleyan Church, 800 N. Pink St., Cherryville, N.C.

Maurice Hoyle
CHERRYVILLE - Maurice “Bud” Hoyle, 73, of 104 Putnam Street, died March 23, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 until 7:30 at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home.
Born in Lincoln County, he was part owner of Hoyle Construction and worked as a carpenter until retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Lail Hoyle; two brothers, Paul Hoyle of Fallston; five grandchildren, Vic Hoyle, Mark Hoyle, Jason Wilson, Marshall Hargrave, and Nichole Hargrave; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 579 Cherryville, N.C. 28021.
